Eddie looks like a guy that doesn't take himself too seriously. He seems to like to drink a lot and talk a lot (but with his thick British accent, it's not like we could understand half what was said). He seems to swagger on stage a lot, often using his left arm to illustrate the songs.
There wasn't enough room on stage for Argos to do his infamous microphone skip, but he did manage to sing half of "DC Comics" by the bar section. Speaking of which, I think it's cool that Argos is a huge DC fan - since UK comics are usually, you know, 2000 AD/Judge Dredd sort. During the song, Argos spouted out what I hear as "Christian Bale", "Booster Gold" (if I can remember, I think he was basically a janitor from the future with future tech and a Legionaires flight ring), and something about "Metropolis".

The thing about "The Passenger", from their latest album Art Brut vs Satan, is that it got this great introduction. Eddie explained how he thought the Iggy Pop song was about taking the subway, "Iggy doesn't seem to me to be the driving sort." It wasn't until later did he discovered that Iggy's song was about taking heroin in back of a limo with David Bowie. Too funny.
Oh the other thing, the way Eddie sings, if you can call it singing, is quite interesting. It's more like rambling, it definitely feels at time like The Fall - only with a lot heavier backing band.
The band left and came back with three encores. I thought I heard Eddie saying "we don't normally do this", which may have been said in an ironic kind of way. I really couldn't tell, all I know is that the encores were met by the fans' demands.

![]() Vampire Weekend... on a weekday ♥ photograph by Brody |
It's April 3rd, and the sign on the door of the Triple Rock Social Club in Minneapolis clearly reads: "This show is completely SOLD OUT. Seriously"
Vampire Weekend must be very pleased with themselves. I mean, these guys were on SNL (3/18/08), on the cover of Spin Magazine (Mar 2008), and overall huge support from MPR ... so basically these guys are probably the most overhyped band right now.
You know me, the more hyped a band is, the more they have to prove to me that they are worth all the buzz. Fortunately, I was impressed with them. They clearly know how to manipulate their audience ("this is a tall order, but could you guys ....") and the band played really well.
The one downfall is that they are still very, very young (and I don't mean the way Ezra Koenig looks like he's barely 18 with his dashing good looks and polo shirt). They barely had enough material to make the show last for an hour. In fact, they played their entire debut album, plus two other songs.
Of the two songs, one of them is untitled as of this writing - and it requires the keyboardist, Rostam Batmanglij, to pick up an extra guitar. This new song is actually pretty good, possibly the best song on the whole set... plus I was quite surpised with the way Batmanglij handled the guitar with ease.
I felt sorry for was the opening one-man-band, Jona Bechtolt, or better known by his stage name Yacht. His music and style, it didn't mesh well with Vampire Weekend's pseudo caribbean/reggae inspired rock and roll. Yacht is more about a man and his Mac Air and his anchor sign of love (Bechtolt insists on having the lights turned off as he wanted to show this off).
Although I like what Bechtolt was doing (dancing and sweating and singing to pre-recorded music with lots of glass breaking sound effects), I felt that the audience wasn't ready or wanted to see his sort of performance art.
Still, being on what looks like mostly a sold-out tour schedule can only do good for Yacht and I'm hoping he won some new fans as a result of being on this successful tour.
I am very interested in seeing where Vampire Weekend and Yacht lands in the future.
For more information on Yacht, check out Valley Girl's article and also one of W♥M's favorite record label, K Records, as well as his official website, teamyacht.com.
As for Vampire Weekend, I'm sure they're already well on their way on being on the cover of NME anyday now.

British Sea Power are quite famous, so I won't spend too much time talking about them. They played here in Minneapolis yesterday (March 21st) at the Triple Rock Social Club.
They certainly "like the rock music" and their set ended with a wacky destructo free-for-all rock out encore.
There were great moment during the show, including guitarist Martin Noble climbing and playing on the shoulders of an audience member and later just climbing on various people. The guy's pretty tall too, so it's quite funny to see.
The bassist (Hamilton) and guitarist (Yan) both switch back and forth to sing. I'm having a hard time remember who was playing what, but I believe the bassist's singing style wasn't really meant as rock and rolly as I get the impression his lyrics are more sensitive. It's really too bad because everything was really noisy and you could barely hear what he was saying. Perhaps it's the Triple Rock sound system, perhaps I'm going deaf in my old age.
While I'm complaining - why bother with Abi Fry, the violin player, as it sounds to me that all the notes she played ended up being drowned by two guitars, a bass, drums and a brass cornet (yes, it's true). There was a shining moment when no one was playing and all you could hear was Fry's violin being played.
The other two opening band was Minneapolis' One for the Team (myspace.com), who I was told was recently signed to The Miltia Group. A few other bands in the group's camp includes Tahiti 80 and The Appleseed Cast[W♥M] so you may probably hear more about One for the Team in the future.
They didn't have quite the showmanship of the second band called Colourmusic (colourmusic.net), who were dressed in all white down to their instruments.
I was pretty impressed with Colourmusic's style, which emphasised on drumming, bass, and acting like goofballs.
The highlight of their set was when the rhythm guitarist took up a second drum.
Overall, a pretty enjoyable show, despite a very tired me having been awake since 6am.
