Welcome back Ryan to the W♥M team. Celebrating the 50th episode of W♥M Radio, we talked about a few things: Gary McKinnon, an overview of the podcast, music & tech: Twitter and Spotify, what we're listening to, The White Stripes, Fruit Bats, Peter Gabriel's "Solsbury Hill", M Ward, Modest Mouse's King Rat, etc.
The show is long, split into two parts: the organized topics section and the random "just two guys talking" segment. The long run time also means extra large file size, so I had to compressed the file to just mono and at 64kps. It sounds OK to me - but if you want a higher stereo quality, send me an email and we'll have to do a file-transfer or a yousendit kind of thing. The stereo file is over 70mb, the mono file is 36mb.
Ryan compiled is a list of musicians/music-related websites on Twitter:

I got a few tour date announcements, but since I'm limited to space here, you're going to have to go to The Slits help Chloe Sevigny celebrate new clothing line and tour US // Mika Miko, Neptune, Quintron to read the full article. I'll just be summarizing on some of the bands that I'm familar with.
So the first item on there is that The Slits to help Chloe Sevigny's new clothing line. If you like any Riot Grrls you know that many of these bands were hugely influenced by The Slits, an early 80s punk band from London.
I actually had no idea they were back together until I saw that they're going on tour and will be helping out the actress Chloe Sevigny (who many of you have probably seen her in the movie, Boys Don't Cry).
Speaking of punk grrls, I noticed that Mika Miko are also doing a few dates. Although I never picked up their C.Y.S.L.A.B.F. album, I was interested in them enough to grab a free MP3 from Kill Rock Star's website last year when the album was released.
I noticed that KRS have started their own blog, which isn't necessary just about music.
The other items are: Neptune launched their tour to support their new album, Guns Are For Kids to finish up on new record, and The May Fire to play Noise Pop '08.
The last item on the press release is that Quintron are on tour with Black Lips. I did get a chance to quickly listen to their EP Jamskate.
It sounds like a video game song done with an organ. There's two version of the "Jamskate" song on the EP, an instrumental version and the one with lyrics. Although I like the instrumental, I think it is kind of naked without the cool lyrics:
Steal our music and sell it like a whore
But when we're out on the floor, rolling around
Everything is alright like life on a cloud
We're going to jam! Jamskating
The actual cover art is black and white (as pictured), but I like this yellow cover.

One of the most unfriendly radio band name is Fuck Buttons. They're basically two experimental DJs of Andrew Hung & Benjamin John Power from Bristol and Street Horrrsing will be released March 18th, 2008.
A full review will be done later, I've only quickly listened to it, but first impression is that I think they're designed more as a live band than a studio recording band.
Street Horrrsing Tracklist
1. Sweet Love For Planet Earth
2. Ribs Out
3. Okay, Let's Talk About Magic
4. Race You to my Bedroom - Spirit Rise
5. Bright Tomorrow
6. Colours Move
The record is being released by ATP/R, which is the same company responsible for the Sold-Out My Bloody Valentine shows in June. I believe the actual pressed CD will not contain the band's logo or title, based on the images I've seen of the non-promo copies.

Finally, The White Stripes are releasing Conquista EP, which is their Spanish version of "Conquest". Since I don't actually have "Conquista", I thought I'd display their english "Conquest" for you to listen.
I haven't heard the original Patti Page version (written by Corky Robbins), but I am assuming The White Stripes brought their own southern-rock flavor to it. They even released the song as a single from Icky Thump (2007) as they felt so strongly about this song.
The song did really well, reaching #2 on the Billboard charts (according to their press release)... it should be interesting to see how well they do with the Spanish audience as they're scheduled to appear on Pesi Musica.
So far, the White Stripes are nominated for 4 Grammys at Sunday's 50th Annual Grammy Awards, including "Best Alternative Album" for Icky Thump, "Best Rock Song" for the song "Icky Thump" and "Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group."
On a side note, I noticed that the two are selling a two cameras: the JACK Holga and MEG Diana. Each is retailed for $150-180 and only 3,000 custom cameras were produced.
What I find fascinating is that these are FILM cameras, not digital. I haven't used a film camera in so long, I've always thought they had discontinued film altogether.

Alright, here's the final Christmas wrap-up (haha). They are fast and loose, so don't be too picky about my research.
The Parselmouths are two girls from Seattle, Washington, who writes Harry Potter songs through a Slytherin point of view. They're part of the Wizard Rock thing (see link).
They have an album called Sssss which they released last year. They seem to have been disenchanted (god I'm horrible with my puns) with traditional CD and will stop printing their debut album (currently it's selling at a reduced price of $8).
The Christmas song they did is a cover of "Santa Baby" (a song that's often miscredited to Marilyn Monroe) as "Voldy Baby" on the Jingle Spells: Leaky's Rocking Christmas (2007). All the details on this sold-out album is on the-leaky-cauldron.org.
More information on theparselmouths.com or myspace
Speaking of puns, check out George Strait's "Merry Christmas Strait To You" from his 1986 album of the same name.
There are a few things I like about this song, first the 'strait' part
and, second, it's very cheerful and unapologeticly country look and sound.
The other cheery and happier song I really like is T.Rex's "Christmas Bop", which I couldn't dig up any information about this Christmas single. It seem to have been released in 1976 and according to Rhino: "the quashed single". Was this song forcibly suppressed ? It's so good!
For those who don't know T.Rex, they are a wildly popular glam rocker from the 70s, whose lead singer, Marc Bolan tragically died of a car accident shortly before his 30th birthday. The band re-formed under Mickey Finn's direction, but renamed themselves as Mickey Finn's T.Rex until Finn's death in 2003.
I previously mentioned The Lovers
and their sex-drenched song "Christmas Tree" (I don't think she's
singing about a tree, if you know what I mean) and so I thought I'd put
up their BBC live performance.
A few songs will end this post: Baxendale's "Flash Gordon" is from A Very Magistery Christmas. I bought this song off of e-music
and my number one complaint about e-music is that they don't offer
album artwork - so apologies for the poor artwork.
As you know I love Baxendale and am sadden that they are no longer releasing music. You can read more about them on W♥M.
The Jackson Five's "I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus" is quite cute. I believe they only released one Christmas album (in 1970), but the album's been re-issued over the years with different artwork and tracklisting.
The original chart-topping song was recorded by Jimmy Boyd, who was barely 12 years old at the time. Boyd went on to record several other #1 hits, but I've never heard of any of them :/
Finally, who doesn't like The White Stripes? V2 Records released Merry Christmas From ... The White Stripes on 7" in 2002.
The b-sides are pretty hilarious, it includes Meg White singing (or trying to sing while forgetting the lyrics) to "Silent Night". The other b-side is just Jack White reading "Story of the Magi".
So happy Christmas, we'll do this again next year!
Edit: I was waiting for the artwork to "The Spirit Of Things", so I was finally given the image (it's very very tiny).
Cerebral Paul is a solo project from Paul Saylor, the keyboardist from Fish Relics.
He's offering this instrumental song for download on his myspace until midnight.... which is probably over by now.
In the spirit of the holidays, I've made my single In "The Spirit Of Things" available as a free download. This offer ends at midnight tonight, so get your copy now!
Find out more about Fish Relics on their myspace page.

Continuing with my semi-regular Halloween entries, my theme today is that infamous Jack the Ripper.
|
|
JACK THE RIPPER
I'm not morbid, or anything, but I was a bit fascinated with Jack
the Ripper when I bought my first issue of "From Hell", the comic book
by Alan Moore and Eddie Campbell. It's not so much the story of Jack
the Ripper that interested me - but the appendixes at the end of each
issue!
I would often read a few pages and then instantly flip to the appendix to see why the writer decide to portray certain things. Moore is simply a brilliant storyteller, drawing his own conclusions based on actual details.
Here's an example of the appendix:
CHAPTER FIVE, Pages 28&29
written by Alan Moore
(excerpt)
The details of Polly's murder are a fiction, although pieced together from certain facts. It is my belief that Polly Nicholls was killed by strangulation somewhere quite close to Buck's Row and then carried there physically before the body was mutilated. The fact that Polly was dead before the mutilations started would seem to be borne out of the lack of blood around the body, most of it having seeped into Polly's clothing. Arterial blood from a living body does not seep. It spurts, anything up to six or seven feet. Therefore, given the bruising upon Polly's neck and the sides of her face (see Jack the Ripper, A to Z by Begg, Skinner and Fido), I suggest that she was first killed by strangulation or by the more efficient method employed by [William] Gull here, that of squeezing shut the carotid artery. She was then taken to Buck's Row before the mutilations started, since there was no trail of blood leading into the street and I suggested the encounter with her killer and subsequent strangling could not have happened in Buck's Row without causing more noise....
Anyone interested in reading a fictional story based on factual reports on Jack the Ripper, I highly recommend "From Hell" (First Printing, November 1999). The paperback should set you back $35, but I'm sure you can find it used or new at a discounted price. I own all the original First Printing prestige formatted books as well as a collected version from Top Shelf Productions.
So here are some songs called "Jack the Ripper". I've previously mentioned about the Morrissey version, and in my research, I did find these new songs... one by this band called Casey Jones & The Governors. The the Jones song is actually very fun and I love it.
I found out that the song (as most "Jack the Ripper" songs) is actually originally by horror rocker Screaming Lord Sutch. He's very famous in England, but outside of the UK, he's virtually unknown. The weird thing is that in his live performances, he usually dress up as Jack the Ripper. The creepiest thing was that he committed suicide by hanging in 1999, apparently Lord Sutch suffered from clinical depression.
I got The White Stripes's "Jack the Ripper" Peel Session from devin306, I believe all the Peel Sessions were compiled in a bootleg.
The Horrors also covered "Jack the Ripper" as the intro song on their album Strange House (2007).
Other notable mentions:
- LL Cool J has a song called "Got You (Return of Jack The Ripper)", but unfortunately has nothing to do with the killer, so I've decided to not include the song here.
- Link Wray's 1963 "Jack the Ripper" is a surf-instrumental song. You can find out more information about the artist and song on www.linkwraylegend.com. Also, The Raybeats covered Link Wray's "Jack the Ripper", so essentially it sounds like the same song.
There are loads of Jack the Ripper band names, the most popular one is a from Paris, France.
PS, "From Hell" was eventually adapted for a major motion picture in 2001. The movie failed to capture what was interesting about Jack the Ripper (William Gull's character), but instead concentrated on Inspector Frederick George Abberline (played by Johnny Depp).
I wish the movie would've followed the book more closely, however I can understand that it is a movie and is very different from the book it's based on.
