September is not just the month, but the stage name for Swedish singer, Petra Marklund, who finally decided to try and take on the US with her self-titled US debut album last month (February 2008).
I should point out that this album actually does not contain any new material, all the tracks are from her second (In Orbit) and third album (Dancing Shoes).
If you don't have either UK albums and are into dance music, it's
probably worth your time to check out the domestic release of September.
As you know, I do have a pretty soft spot in my heart for all-things-Swedish and I've always admire that they take a music genre and kind of interpret it in their own unique way. Although September's music sounds like pretty standard dance pop music, there are some elements of 80s synth (her hit single, "Cry For You") to some great lyrically "sad" songs ("R.I.P.", "Until I Die", and "Sad Song").
By the way, I should also point out that Marklund (like many of her popstar contemporaries) does not write her own music, so any praising of lyrics should fall to either of these music writers: Jonas von der Burg, Anoo Bhagavan, or Niklas von der Burg.
Anyway, if you're a fan of diva dance singers like Sophie Ellis-Bextor, either of the Minogue sisters, Roisin Murphy, and Bertine Zetlitz - you might want to add September to your list. Her album's available in the US from Robbins Entertainment.

Säkert! is the Swedish-language project of Annika Norlin from Hello Saferide, which I previously mentioned on W♥M.
Recently, the band have been nominated for numerous awards in Sweden: Best Female Artist of 2007 on Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet's reader's choice award Rockbjörnen, the Swedish's version of the Grammy's (The Grammis Award) for Newcomer of the Year, plus Album of the year and Female artist of the year, among others!
It's easy to see why people are raving about Säkert! (which means "Sure!"), their debut album has one of the poppiest/catchies song called "Sanningsdan" (meaning "Truthday"?). Looking at the liner notes (all in Swedish), I think the male vocals is called Martin Hanberg from the band Sibiria. This song is excellent, in any language.
The only downside is that the whole album is in Swedish, although the album is well worth checking out if you are a Swedishpop fan (such the whole writing staff on W♥M).
I would have to say that though I can't understand it, I do get the general idea of what the song is about. For instance, "Det Kommer Bara Leda Till Nåt Ont" sounds like a dialogue between Norlin and Markus Krunegård. (I think it's about being naked or something).
Currently, it would seem that Norlin is quite busy, she's apparently the co-host (with Mattias Lindeblad) of a Swedish music radio show called Musikjournalen Live Session. I looked up Lindeblad, to see who he is, and apparently he was a bassit for a metal band called Liers in Wait from Gothenburg, Sweden.
Anyroad, I leave you now with Annika in an elevator, courtesy of musicadebolso.com.br:

I haven't really any information on this band as they only have a myspace and it has no bio. I could have asked for some info, but I really wanted to get this band out before the holidays because they are excellent and I haven't much time to do this sort of stuff. I do know they are from Stockholm, Sweden. So far they only have a 3 song cd single out that can be purchased through Cloudberry Records. The first two tracks are downloadable on their myspace and I suggest you go on over and download them both. It was really hard to choose which one to feature because they are both so good. Anyway, I really hope you guys like it. Also, have an totally radical holiday everybody! Jyah!

Jonna Lee is originally from Stockholm, Sweden, but is currently living in London. Her debut solo album is called 10 Pieces, 10 Bruises and was released on October 10th, 2007 on Razzia Records. Supposedly she had released music when she was 16, but I couldn't find any information on her previous releases.
She wrote a full electro-influenced album prior to 10 Pieces, 10 Bruises, but then right before releasing the album in 2006, she changed her mind. You can listen to "Passerby", a demo from 2005 on her myspace page.
She then started working on brand new material with Claes Björklund (her fiancé). She wrote a song called "And Your Love" with Ed Harcourt in mind as the male singer. She sent the song to him and he loved it so much that he ended up producing and playing on most of her album.
Harcourt even invited Lee to be the opening act on his tour through Sweden and Norway, which, sadly, just ended on December 12th.
Regarding the album, I think it would've been kind of cool to have just 10 songs on the album (representing 10 Pieces/Bruises), but there is an eleventh track called "Prints" with "bonus track" written next to it. The only information about this song listed on the liner notes is that it was recorded at Ed Harcourt's house in London last August. They must've really liked this song to stick it on the album (probably at the very last minute!)
There's some great songs on this album, including the single Dried Out Eyes and "I Wrote This Song", featuring Danny Goffey (from Supergrass[W♥M]) on drums and backup singing. It's a fun love song: "I wrote this song about you/I thought it might attract you/Sweet thing now would you like to..."
Although this might not be considered "singles" friendly, I quite like "Autumn Song", complete with its clapping. It made me miss the orange leaves of the Fall... and it's the song I've chosen.
Anyway, in a Christmas-related song theme of late, she's recorded Mariah Carey's 1994 song, "All I Want For Christmas is You", at Johan Lundgren's new large studio.[1] The song is available for download on her myspace.

Attention Swedishpop lovers! This is Southside Stalkers from Stockholm. They have a debut album called The Sound of Speed, released May 2007.
I don't really know much about them, other than that they're essentially: Sparrow & Indy, both stage names. When they play live, they're joined on stage by Peter, Martin, Karl-Johan (Kojac) and Linus. I should also mention that Sparrow is in another band, Doctors & Dealers.
Since you can already download "Five" and "Deliverance" from their record label (both excellent songs), I've decided to choose "That You're Strange".
This song works very well as a boy-girl song (similar to their "Ukelele Love Song" song about a boy & a girl of how they met each other at a 7-11) and contain a really great sing-along "yoo-oooouu" part.
Other really good song worth listening to are: "Texas Sunshine", which is sung to the tune of a country-western style, and "Wholesome A** F******". As that last song title suggests, it's a song about butt love, but it's done quite straight & serious. I don't even know if that last sentence made any sense. It's a very sweet song.
According to their blog, they've already recorded some tracks for their second album. You can download "Not Able" on their myspace, which is from their forth-coming second album.

Hello Saferide
Säkert!
Live Band Members
Footnotes [1] From myspace.com/saferide |
I really should let someone else (Jason) write about Hello Saferide because everyone seems to know more about her than me. I've only really discovered her recently through another voxer.
Hello Saferide is from Stockholm, Sweden, and is really just Annika Norlin. The name was inspired by "inspired by an intelligent bus driver in a drug-addicted small town" from Willimantic, Connecticut.[1]
Regal Recordings, who's probably most famous for picking up Lily Allen, have decided to release Hello Saferide in the UK, their first 7" single is "I Was Definitely Made For These Times" with "The Quiz" as the flipside. It's marketed as a double A-Side.
Norlin is currently involved in another project, called Säkert!. They are only recording Swedish language-only releases. If you speak Swedish, you can read about them on Razzia Records. (Maybe someone can translate for me).
The song that I really like (from what I've listened to) is "Long Lost Penpal", featuring Firefox AK (Andrea Kellerman) singing the penpal part. The song is very sad and I believe might be based on actual correspondents.
I
really identify with this song on more than one level. You know, before
the internet, people wrote letters and we had penpals. At the height of
my bedsit days, I had over forty penpals, and I'm still friends with
some of them to this day. Although we don't write traditional letters
anymore.
There is one woman who I dearly miss and wonder what she is doing these days. Her name is Silja R from Finland. She's an artist, loves Sparks and Davie Bowie. This is one of her envelope (I don't live there anymore).
We used to make FBs (Friendship Booklets) and send each other mix tapes. I sometime wish I could get back into letter writings and sending/receiving packages, but with my schedule as of late, I don't think I could have the time (and not to mention the costs associated with postage).
Some of the envelope art that we'd send each other were pretty creative, and I remember spending hours and hours putting just the right touch of hidden words and art. Those were the days, weren't they?
In order to save money on postage, there is a trick we used to do. We'd coat the postage stamps with a small film of glue. When we receive a package, using just a little spit, you can wipe away the canceled ink. We'd then send back each other's stamps and, of course, we'd never re-use the stamps that much, it gets suspicious after a while.
