Anyway, she first came on the music scene via 2001's SXSW*, where Chip Taylor met Carrie Rodriguez and was impressed with her that he asked her to tour with him in Europe. Since then, together, they released three albums and one EP.
By 2006, Rodriguez went solo and released Seven Angels on a Bicycle, with the help of Taylor (who co-wrote and had a major influence on the first album). With She Ain't Me, released late last year on the Manhattan Records (who I also just recently found out makes most of their music available on the BMG Music Club), Taylor is absent, but replacing him are quite a few different co-writers: ex-Jayhawks Gary Louris, folk singer Mary Gauthier, Leslie Nail, Jim Boquist, producer Malcolm Burn (who won a Juno award for producer of the year for Emmylou Harris' "Here I Am"), among others.
Listening to She Ain't Me, I was immediately taken to the title track ("She Ain't Me"). I marked it as a five-star track on iTunes and it became an instant repeat track for me. I feel that the song has a country folk influence, but the melodies sounds more like a great radio pop song. The singer warns the listener that this new woman might be perfect, but she simply cannot replace the singer (because she simply isn't her.)
The most surprisingly thing I found about the song, having looked up the song credit as co-written by "D.Wilson", which I have concluded it is non other than Dan Wilson - who you may all remember as being the lead singer from Minneapolis' Semisonic.**
I also enjoyed "El Salvador", which is a long-distance (love?) song. If it's not love, it's definitely about missing someone... apparently that person is in El Salvador. The song is surprisingly optimistic in tone as well, despite all the waiting and wishing she could swim across the ocean.
Rodriguez's fiddles, which is what she is known for, only appeared on a few of the songs (the rest, she settled on playing tenor guitar). The most noticeable fiddle song is "Absence", which sounds like a southern bluegrass song and reminds me a lot of Bobbie Gentry. Compared to her first solo album, the majority of banjo & fiddles gave Seven Angels on a Bicycle more of a bluegrass feel to it.
If you love folk, pop, and a little bluegrass, you should want to check out Carrie Rodriguez. Judging from her major promotional tour, I think you will be hearing from her soon - if not already.
* I am happy to report that Rodriguez is returning back to SXSW in a few short weeks.
** From a Minneapolis point of view, she'll be appearing on KARE TV and on Cities97, as well as playing at the Varsity, the same night (April 8th). I would not be surprise if Wilson shows up at the Varsity show - so be on the lookout.

Imaginary Biographies is Leerone's first full-length album featuring eleven original compositions with wonderful piano ballads. On choosing the title of the album, she said, "I think of this batch of songs as little stories and worlds that exist in my mind. I was thinking a lot about when something is imaginary, specifically that we choose to keep it imaginary, or to make it real. That's sort of where the title of the album came from." On the opening track "To Fill the Void", she provides some uplifiting words for anyone who's had uncertainty with their life; "Who are they to tell you what your life is supposed to mean? Why are you so willing to be at their mercy?". On "JUNK / Peace of Mind", she dismisses the media saying she can't find peace of mind among all the advertisements inviting consumption and greed, TV because it's too depressing, and People magazine because of its "rhetoric of stardom".
With songs like these, it urged me to listen to her two previous EPs, In This Life, On This Road and Hail to the Queen. They sound a little more raw and stripped down compared to Imaginary Biographies. Hail to the Queen is just her and her piano, whereas In This Life, On This Road features other instruments accompanying her piano and beautiful voice. A song that stood out while listening to these EPs was "All Is Well" from In This Life, On This Road. It's a simple song about her naivety as a child. She believed her life would be like Snow White, but as she grew older, that dream faded away and seemed intangible. Leerone is a great musician whose releases I look forward to, especially with her choice of subject matter in her songs and amazing musical compositions.
Happy New Year to everyone! Here's to another year of sharing music with everyone who visits the site with open ears. I'm glad that WHM has a variety of contributors, all with their own personal musical interests. I'm looking forward to 2009 for some new releases.

The theme of Elephants...Teeth Sinking Into Heart seems to be heartbreak and trying to overcome it. The album is split into two parts; the songs on Elephants are darker and more intimate while the tracks on Teeth Sinking Into Heart are grittier and more cynical.
The title track for Elephants ends with a gripping line that sets up the theme of the album; "So for those of you falling in love, keep it kind, keep it good, keep it right. Throw yourself in the midst of danger, but keep one eye open at night." The song was written while running down a mountain in Woodstock without a pen or paper; she kept repeating the lyrics so she wouldn't forget them. "Sunday Afternoon" is a beautifully orchestrated nine-minute piece about making a difficult decision and accepting that both people involved had a part in the collapse of the relationship; but not to dwell on it forever. It's followed by a sorrowful sounding "Elephants Instrumental" and "Duet", a stripped-down acoustic tune featuring singer-songwriter Ray Lamontagne about two people thinking of each other at the same time but are unfortunately in different places. She felt she was over the relationship, but her emotions got the best of her. On "Over and Over", she confesses, "I really thought I was okay. I really thought I was just fine, but when I woke this time, there was nothing to take me back to sleep, to take you off my mind".
Whereas Elephants was more intimate, Teeth Sinking Into Heart seems to be her cynical side. "Sidedish Friend" opens this part of the album with the lyrics "I don't want you hanging out with me, but I want you when I call. We can stay together separately and we won't be lonely at at all" and "I don't want to get too close to you and I don't want you too close to me". It's about being someone's part-time lover. In "Faster", she sings, "You're like an old tattoo and I know you'll fade in time ... I'm not the one for you, there's just one thing left to do. Why don't you let me be." With this part of the album, she's clearly ready to move on.
From October 9 through November 18, Yamagata will be on tour for The Hotel Café Tour 2008. Joining her will be some amazing up-and-coming female singer-songwriters, some of which have been featured on W♥M: Ingrid Michaelson, Meiko, Priscilla Ahn, Kate Havnevik, Thao Nguyen, Brooke Fraser, Samantha Crain, Alice Russell, Jaymay, Erin McCarley, Katie Herzig, Jenny Owen Youngs, Lenka, Emily Wells, Anya Marina, Holly Conlan, and Catherine Feeny.

Let me stress that this is a Summer EP (released in late June of this year), so it's full of warmth and happy feelings.
Treva Blomquist is a singer/songwriter, and apparently a vagabond (she's currently somewhere around Tennessee and Washington). If you like pop music, with some folk (this includes banjos & fiddles), then you'll love Blomquist's latest EP.
Looking at the track listing on her debut album, Plain Vanilla Me, from 2005, I see that two of those songs ("Home" & "I Could Get Used to This") appear on the EP. This isn't a surprise to me, as I think whenever bands re-use songs - that they are great songs.
Of the six songs, "Fire With Fire", I feel is the best. This song is more upbeat and the lyrics seem to be from someone with a devil-may-care attitude.
Be sure to see her on tour:

WOODFISH woodfishmusic.com ♥ myspace.com Woodfish are a funky jam band from Red Bank, New Jersey. It would seem, based on their track listing for their 2006 album, Bamm Diddely, that this new 2008 EP, Breathe, that there is only one new track: "In My Eyes". I suspect these same-titled songs might have been updated for the EP, lots of sax used on these songs. Like most jam bands, this music is really meant to be experienced live. The band sounds like they are having a great time playing the funky bass and wild guitar. I would hazard a guess that any party or outdoor concert would love to have these guys as entertainment. So, I listened to the EP on my iPod with headphones and I noticed myself head-bopping to "Bamm Diddely" (I'm not sure if that title is an homage to Bo Diddley, but I hope it is), "Losing My Mind" and "Love Another". CAW! CAW! cawcawmusic.com ♥ myspace.com Caw! Caw! are an indie rock trio from Chicago, Illinois. Their biography lists them as originally formed in 2001 as a punk quartet. I believe this EP, Wait Outside, is their debut with their current incarnation. The seven tracks are a quick listen, it's been on repeat in my car for a while. The problem I have about listening to music in my car is that I couldn't take notes on the songs I liked. I remember two key songs that I liked: Tracks two and five. As it turns out, two is "Organisms", which is available as a free download. The good thing about this song is that there are a ton of lyrics, with these standing out: "tigers, panthers, little trees, bumblebees". The other is "Work", which shows off more of an experimental side and their punk origins. Wait Outside was released September 23rd on Slanty Shanty Records. TIGER! SHIT! TIGER! TIGER! trevamusic.com ♥ myspace.com Hands down for the best name for a band: Tiger! Shit! Tiger! Tiger! This 8-track EP comes from a New York trio. It has a very garagey/DIY punk feel to it. What comes across is that they are fun, fun, fun! You shouldn't take them too seriously - I mean, just look at their name! Spin magazine agrees with me, they recently put a blurb about them in their September issue. Like typical punk music, these eight songs are all very short, practically all under three minutes each. The most interesting song on the EP is "Insert Disco Beat Here", which seems to have some sort of synth or keys in there. I reckon the best song is the introduction song: "Crime Wave". This is a high-energy song, complete with Superchunk-ish singing. If you enjoy brand new raw/unpolished punk, you should check these guys out. NELSON. nelsonrock.com ♥ myspace.com/nelsonrock Note the period. That's "Nelson.", not to be confused with the twins Matthew & Gunnar. Released last Monday in the UK was Nelson.'s The (Over) Song Remixes EP - just prior to their album Revolving Doors to be released on September 29th on Ctrl Alt Del Records. I'm not sure if the album will be available domestically in the US - please check with the label if you are interested. The title track (and best song) is the album version of "The (Over) Song". JB Devay, I think, is the singer (?). Well, his accent doesn't sound particularly Frenchy as I had hoped when I saw that Nelson is based out of Paris. It's still cute though. On the EP is four different mixes for "Chicken Lips", two instrumental mixes with one dub version. Each of the four versions are very long, clocking in at 9 minutes each. They're very electronica/disco-y, so I felt it had a very slow build, until the lyrics kick in: "this is not over, this is not over..." The (Over) Song Remixes EP is available now, look for Revolving Doors next week. Tour Dates 09/29/08 REVOLVING DOORS - ALBUM UK RELEASE! UK 11/25/08 LE TRABENDO + WOLF PARADE PARIS |

I got a press release that singer/songwriter Laura Marling will be debuting in America with her album, Alas I Cannot Swim, confirmed for August 19th on Astralwerks Records (although available digitally via iTunes and elsewhere on May 20th). This is kind of odd, but I've always associated Astralwerks with techno/dance, because Marling is more folk pop, than anything else.
Longtime readers to W♥M might have remember our mention of Mrs Marling, back when she was only seventeen... it looks like she's come a long way in just a year, selling out most venues where she performs live.
So far, for this year, she'll be in States in New York for two performances:
-
6/16/08 Brooklyn, NY @ Glasslands
6/18/08 New York, NY @ Mercury Lounge
I am assuming more US dates are to follow, but in the meantime, she's doing UK dates (see sidebar for more details).
So, here's a little trivia about her Song Box: Apparently the boxset intended for Alas I Cannot Swim had a bunch of stuff designed by Marling, including postcards, trinkets, a concert ticket to see her in March (obviously no longer valid), and were really designed to associate to each of her songs. According to her:
Nobody buys records any more and people are listening to MP3s on bad headphones, using music for wallpaper. I want people to love music, I want people to treasure it, not just my songs, but treasure music.
Seeing as it's something well out of my comfortable price range (it's over $50 to have it imported to me), I will just have to deal with the cheap CD-R my friend gave me.
Maybe things will be more affordable once her album is available domestically... I am hoping for a reproduction of the said-Song Box.

The songs on the album seem very personal and emotional. There were three tracks that stood out upon first listen. "Mine to Remember" is about wanting one last chance to say "I love you" to the woman he truly loves and hoping will stay. "Why Can't We" is from his father's perspective and is summed up in the chorus — "why can't we stay in love" — which is referring to his parents. And in "She's Gone" he's trying to cope with the woman's absence. The Sweet Bye and Bye is a solid, gripping debut from an up and coming singer-songwriter. When I say I like folk music it is because, more than anything else, I like lyrics. So when I receive an album labeled folk I have certain expectations. With the exception of Banhart, I don't take kindly to nonsensical mumbo jumbo song writing. My other gripe is this singer-songwriter genre aka bland songs about why you ain't getting regular oral sex or love...mostly about love.
Of course, none of these criticisms can be lodged against Eugene Francis Jr; I just woke up in an armchair surrounded by cheap beer; with the shopping network trying to sell me something that looked like a sex aid but turned out to be a gas powered candle. My eyelids were pretty heavy and the flame wasn't lit. Again, nothing to do with EFJ, who releases his latest album, The Golden Beatle, on 28th April 2008.
The album art is pretty cool, depicting EFJ as a Native American riding on the back of a dog while being hunted by a gang of men and hounds. To explain what is at first glance an absurd piece of art, EFJ has Native American and Eskimo blood and he loves his dog.
The biggest criticism I have against The Golden Beatle is I've heard it all before, a great singing voice and ability to play instruments are no substitute for original content. My favourite song on the album is 'Poor Me', with the lines like 'I favour tigers but I celebrate cowards' followed quickly by 'don't want a world where religion is power'. What can I ; I am a sucker for any hint of atheism in a song. However the best line in this song and the entire album is, '...it's not a story where boy meets a girl, more like a story boy encounters world'. For this line alone I am grateful.
I could relate to 'Mistakes I Have Made', by all accounts a breakup song. While the songs isn't a gritty hard hitting attack on the girl (or guy) who smashed your heart into a thousand pieces before running off with some singer in a second-rate band; it is a pretty decent song about the fear that the mistakes made in one relationship may echo in all future relationships.
The theme of mistakes continues in the next song, 'My Own Pollution'. To me this is a song about the human condition, dealing with the thoughts and feelings that make us all human. It's an optimistic piece, set to a nice electronica tune.
Another track on the album is Kites. I'll admit I looked up the word 'Kites' in google, hoping for a less obvious definition. As an interesting piece of trivia, the name Kites was "applied to the goddesses Isis and Nephthys in the Osirian cult but also represented women who were hired to accompany or greet the coffins of the deceased at funerals (professional mourners)". Disappointingly, this is a song about actual kites or the metaphor of a kite representing the freedoms and failures of life. Strangely, the song then moves on to use a metaphor of a river to represent a similar idea.
All-in-all, Golden Beatle contains exactly what you would expect from this sort of album, the passing references to love, a mention of poetry and some witty lyrics (Or, at least, I think it was wit; my witdar hasn't really worked since I watched the 1997 pirate comedy, Captain Butler). It won't change your life. It won't really teach you anything you didn't know about yourself. It just sounds pretty nice.
Sydney Wayser is a singer/songwriter currently based out of New York (according to her myspace and tour dates). Her debut album is called Silent Parade and was released last April.
The first thing that strikes you when you hear her sing is that she sounds amazingly like Beth Orton (maybe a little Fiona Apple?). The more you listen to her, you forget the comparison and instead just enjoy the songs.
There's a couple of tracks I wanted to use for this article. I thought the lead track, "Papa Don't Worry", is a really good track to start off the record. The song seems to be a letter to her French father and American mother, telling them that she's finally grown up and they needn't worry about her.
You can download this track, as well as a few others, on her myspace.
The other song I wanted to use is her Amelie-inspired song, "Place De La Bastille". Wayser describes the song as:
Jean-Pierre Jeunet uses striking colors to create a repetitive pattern through the film. Occasionally he introduces light blue, a more subtle color to symbolize something significant, but hidden when blinded by the red and green. I thought this was an analog for finding some of life's more crucial elements, buried amidst all the distraction of our days.
Listening to the song, you can hear the influences: the appearance of the accordion, that particular rhythm... and, of course, the French lyrics. I am sure her French is flawless, but I can't help think the French part sounds too American?
Good news is that you can catch her at some live dates if you live in the area. I'm almost sure when she plays live, she's joined on stage by celloist Yoed Nir, guitarist Adam Tressler, special fx Pat Spadine, and "hittables" Zach Mangan. I'm not sure what hit tables are, but I'm assuming it's some kind of drums or percussion?

I found out about Maia Hirasawa through Vu and while doing a bit of research, found that she's a backup singer for Annika Norlin's Hello Saferide (W♥M post). Hirasawa is a Swedish-Japanese singer-songwriter who was born and raised in Sweden. She's signed to Razzia Records, the same label as Annika Norlin (Hello Saferide / Sakert!), Jonna Lee, They Live By Night, and others. In other words, she's among wonderful Swedish musicians. Her debut album, Though, I'm Just Me, was released last year and according to the press release:
It is a logical name for the album, originally a phrase from one of the songs that didn’t make the cut, because this album is Maia Hirasawa, all the way.
She didn’t just write all the songs by herself, she also produced, arranged and recorded them in a terrace house in Sollentuna and in a cottage in Skåne. Maia thought long and hard about with whom she wanted to record her debut album, before she realized that the most logical choice was to do it on her own. She had to teach herself how to record in the midst of the process of recording but already had a flair for arranging.
The result is the finest of pop, but “with quite a lot of stage musical influences, perhaps a bit like Björn and Benny”, a vague feeling of classical music and melodies you love the first time you hear them and that you’ll never grow bored of.
Her first single "And I Found This Boy" (video) is an upbeat, pop song about
finding love ("for the night") and regretting it. In "Mattis and Maia", she gives the love song a modern spin; instead of the conventional face-to-face break-up,
MySpace is used as the source of messaging. Although their relationship is over, both feel it might not exactly be the end.
She'll
be performing at The Grammis Awards (which is basically the Swedish
version of The Grammy Awards) on January 9. It'll be broadcast live on
TV4 (buy tickets here).
I also wanted to point out that her song "Crackers" features Miss Li, another great musician I'll be posting about soon.

The Callen Sisters are a harp & guitar duo, consisting of real-life sisters, Jessa and Beth. They are playing this Monday (January 7th, 2008) at The Bitter End in New York.
If you like that singer/songwriter variety, you'll like these girls.
I read that of the 12 songs on their record that half of them were written by Jessa and the other by Beth. I couldn't tell who wrote which songs or who's actually singing.
"Anomie", according to the press material, is by Beth. The song is actually poppier than the other songs, with a back percussion/drums (Dan Castellani/Dave Gluck) and bass (Chris Anderson). It is the lead song off the record and it's a good song that will keep you interested for more songs.
They were also recently featured on Harp Magazine, where they offer Irrelevant as a free download. This is another good song, if you listen to the end, there's a nice build up of sounds.
The Callen Sisters' debut album is out now (available on CD ($9.99) and itunes ($9.99))
