2 spoon-full’s of world beat, four guys from Brooklyn, mixed with what resembles a ripped cymbal, and an extra twist all their own gives you a moment in heaven with Yeasayer. This intensely creative quad made their way into the stylish uptown Urban Outfitters venue, July 30th for a free, invitation only, 7pm show. Lines began forming before 5 o’ clock and by 7, had made their way off into the distance, later packed out the venue that could withstand over 400 people.
Each member played more than one role in the show by frequently rotating between percussion roles, vocals, and guitar or bass. The experience began with some brand new songs, and really kicked in with the more familiar song 2080, off of their debut album ALL HOUR CYMABLS. The guitarist ripped, and the crowd bobbed and swung to the tunes. Despite the obstacle that their amount of musical layers may propose; they more than delivered in their live performance.
One of their strongest tracks, in my opinion, is Sunrise. Sunrise is the first track off of their album, and was the second to last song before the demanded encore at their show. It has a strong original beat, great harmonies, and a beautiful arrangement of various instrumental mixtures. It drives the album forward, and definitely gets the crowd moving.
On the lighter side there is Red Cave which ends the album and was the last song of the concert previous to the encore, and was requested by a fan. It is a ‘parts song’, where the vocalists, much like in ‘row, row, row your boat...’, part melody and words. The song harkens back to the old songs of English speaking Europe while also exhibiting a bit of a folky and Bedouin influence. There seems to be a little something from everywhere embedded in their music.
Many will agree, and I am sure you will too, that they are practically incomparable to other musicians and defy any genre that people would love to put them in. They are currently under the WE ARE FREE music label, and have released their debut album ALL HOUR CYMBALS. They were founded by half of a barbershop quartet, followed by the rhythm, and as they have stated, they have turned into a brotherhood. Anand Wilder, Luke Fasano, Ira Wolf Tuton, and Chris Keating, make up this forward motion band that is sure to influence and inspire many current and future musicians, as they find harmony in the mesh of global and indie rock sounds.
To catch them live you can check them out in Chicago at Lollapalooza on August 1st and 2nd, in NYC at the Summer Stage in Central Park on August 4th, but after that you’ll have to follow them to Europe, and Australia. ![]() Annuals ♥ photo by vu ![]() Set List ♥ Varsity Theater, Minneapolis (06/13/08) |
It's been a very long time since I attended an all ages show, which started quite early. The opening band was South Dakota's We All Have Hooks For Hands, with a very large cast of members including: 2 drummers, 2 guitarist, 2 trumpets/ keys, 1 acoustic/ singer, 1 violin, and 1 bass (he was pretty awesome to watch).
The large assembly reminded me of Broken Social Scene, but the singing made me think of very early Flaming Lips. They seem to have a great time on stage, especially when they jammed together three songs.
It wasn't long before Annuals took the stage, and I ran into Greg (you'll have to forgive me as I have poor memory and didn't recognize him). He told me that Annuals was originally a side project of Sunfold, but it seems somehow that they've overtaken the original band as far as being successful. Said he interviewed Kenny a few years back.
They seem pretty comfortable on stage, despite having a few issues with the mics not working (this is the soundboard's fault). As usual, the lights (I think these are handled by Varsity staffer, Erik) is wonderful and the venue's atmosphere is pretty laid back (especially because there are chairs and couches all around).
As you can see from the set list, it was a short set, and there was no encore. This is normal when you consider that there is another band/event starting right afterward... besides, for their last song, "Hot Dog", they seem to have exhausted themselves in an explosive finale.
Catch the Annuals on what's left of their tour, their Wet Zoo EP is out right now. You can try to win a copy from their contest.
Update: Below are four selected photographs from Drew and Sarah.

Podcast Footnotes [1] blog.myspace.com [2] bielerbros.com |
Wow, can you believe Google is down for almost four hours now? I had to use alternate search engines. Remember Alta Vista? They offer an MP3 search feature!
Anyway, in my second of series of interviews for W♥M Podcast (which have been moved to weheartmusic.mypodcast.com), I spoke with Jason Namour, who tells us a little about the music scene from Perth, Australia, and his days when he started www.perthband.com.
Below are all the Perth bands that were mentioned in the Podcast:
♥ The Panda Band
www.thepandaband.com | myspace.com/thepandaband
Band Members: Damian Crosbie (Vox, Guitars), David 'Rufus' Namour (Bass), Steve Callan (Keys/Synth), Chris Callan (Guitar), and Gabriel Nicotra (Drums)
Originally called Philius Phog in the late 90s, they tried to reform as another band before ending up as the Panda Band in 2003.
Currently signed to Filter Magazine's Record label for US distribution.
♥ The Sleepy Jackson
thesleepyjackson.com | myspace.com/thesleepyjackson
Band Members: Luke Steele, Malcolm Clark, Lee Jones, Dave Symes, and Felix Blossom.
One of Perth's most well-known band, they were nominated for the ARIA Awards in 2003 and 2006, but didn't win in either categories for either of their two albums.
The band got their name from an ex-drummer whose name was obviously Jackson and was narcoleptic.
♥ Eskimo Joe
www.eskimojoe.net | myspace.com/eskimojoemusic
Band Members: Kavyen Temperley, Stuart MacLeod, Joel Quartermain
The most popular Australian band among all the bands we mentioned here. Their albums have gone gold and double-platinum.
They're slowly charting at 160 on the CMJ Top 200[1].
Yeah... I've never heard of them either :/
♥ Karnivool
karnivool.com.au | myspace.com/karnivool
Band Members: Ian Kenny (vox), Andrew "Drew" Goddard (guitars), Mark Hosking (guitars), Jon Stockman (bass), and Steve Judd (drums).
When asked where the name "Karnivool" came from, guitarist Drew said:
That's one question I can never answer very well, as the name Karnivool was around before even I was in the band. Kenny originally played guitar and sang with a couple of lads from his high school, Brett and Andrew. They used to play Nirvana and Carcass covers and had a few originals floating around, as well as the name Karnivool which they used loosely as band name for when they played at their local high school parties.[2]

They are currently on tour in the South area of the US.
♥ Snowman
www.thesnowmanempire.com | myspace.com/thesnowmanempire
Band Members: Andy Citawarman (guitar/vox), Joseph McKee (guitar/vox/trumpet), Olga Hermanniusson (bass), and Ross DiBlasio (drums)
What makes this band interesting is that each member was born in different countries. They are from Indonesia, England, Iceland and Australia.
They're currently on tour in September and October. Unfortunately, they're only touring in Australia.
