The theme for these reviews are Singles and EPs. Reviewing singles and especially 1-track songs are fast and easy, because obviously I'm not vested in hours listening to a full length album.

Saint Bernadette - I Wanna Tell You Something... W♥M favorites Saint Bernadette have a new EP called I Wanna Tell You Something... to be released March 17th (although the street date announced on their myspace is closer to March 4th). Please refer to my original article to read about the band. It looks like they (and EVERY other band!) are going to be playing at SXSW this year as well as a few unconfirmed dates. [ read more ] |
The Black Crowes - Goodbye Daughters of the Revolution I have The Black Crowes's Goodbye Daughters of the Revolution 1-track radio promo here. There's really not a whole lot to write about when you're just given one song to listen to. The good news is that if you like old The Black Crowes, this song sounds exactly like what they sounded like on their quadtriple southern blues/rock album, Shake Your Moneymaker - which is not a bad thing at all if you dislike change. Télépathique Télépathique are a dance groove/big beat/DJ duo consisting of Mylene (who does all the vocals) and Erico Theobaldo (who handles all the drums, turntables, and various programming), based out of São Paulo, Brazil. I believe they are already a big hit throughout Europe and their hometown with their album Last Time on Earth (2006), but Americans will finally hear about them through their debut North American single: Love & Lust to be release March 18 on The Control Group. Arianna Solare - Book of Us
Arianna Solare, a singer from Los Angeles, California, released her debut EP called Book Of Us sometime late last year. Looking at her myspace, I thought she is a one-woman folk singer, but this EP has a full backing band of Angelo Vermuelen (guitars), Henrik Linde (bass), Chris Steele (drums), Brent Arnold (cello), and Dan Trollinger (piano). Delorentos Delorentos are a rock band from Dublin, Ireland. It looks like they've released at least six singles/EPs and one debut album (In Love With Detail, 20 April 2007). They were kind enough to provided me with one song from their Basis of Everything EP. The song starts off really slow and quiet, but when it picks up (exactly at the 1 minute mark), it's pretty good. I definitely like the energy and the guitar work on the later half of the song. [ read more ] |
Goodtimes Goodtimes Goodtimes Goodtimes is basically Franc Cinelli, who plays something he calls "alt-folk". His debut album is called Glue (which I think was released in 2007), which I was only offered a few songs his website. Although he's Italian, he did grow up in London, so his songs only have a British accent. Between the four songs I have, I think with its jangly acoustic guitars, I liked "Kids" the best. These are the Top 7 in Concerts on W♥M.
There are some great concert reviews, I had to drop a few (apologies to Jack Penate, Ravenonettes, Last Town Chorus, and Jill Barber) in favor of just diversifying the different writers.
So, let's look at some of the concerts this year:
Ryan & Valley Girl went to see Josh Ritter, while Lara and Silpa wrote about Saint Bernadette.
The shows I wanted to mentioned was Robbers on High Street/Great Northern at 7th Street, with drawing! Plus Mark Olsen's show was equally memorable.
Silpa wrote about her show at the Village Underground for Girls Don't Cry and Lara attended the massive Fanatic Bands as part of the famous CMJ Music Showcase
Finally, Maggie takes the prize and wrote about her amazing concerts: Stars and Ming & Ping.
I don't know about you, but I'm looking forward to 2008. Hopefully, we'll bring even more concert experiences in the new year!

Though the space at 11th Street Bar seemed somewhat claustrophobic, with tables placed almost directly in front of the band, it was suited perfectly for Saint Bernadette to interact with the audience, and, in turn, for the audience to watch them interact with each other and see that they were enjoying themselves. Frontwoman Meredith's voice was smooth, raw, and haunting -- absolutely flawless (despite being 'plagued with a terrible illness'; it's doubtful that anyone would have realized had she not mentioned it). Especially on "Pieces," a mellow, subdued, and wistful song. Even the gritty, more rockish songs ("Lay Me Down"; listen on myspace) seemed to work, especially with the atmosphere of the space (apparently, they had to turn down the volume, due to the prior week's performance being too loud); every note resonated and drew the listeners into a world of vastly different, yet harmonious blend of pop, sonic rock, and jazz. They closed with "Beat Dialogue," their more jazz-influenced song from their debut, In the Ballroom. The experience is completely worth it; while In the Ballroom is enchanting and eclectic, the band's live performance, along with Meredith's confident presence, completes the package. In fact, from what I've heard that evening, I look forward to their upcoming release (at least according to a few places on the web, it's called I Wanna Tell You Something; keep an eye -- or ear -- out for that). Check the tour dates for when they hit your town.

CROSS-POLLINATION at Piano’s (Upstairs) | NYC, New York |

Saint Bernadette frontwoman, Meredith DiMenna opened Tuesday’s show with a generous promise to personally reimburse any dissatisfied patron. The payment? Alcohol. Shots of tequila. Overpriced New York liquor. In that strangely lucid dreamscape that musicians occupy, this guarantee set the tone for the evening: thick, boozy ruminations of love, feminism and love of money.
It’s difficult to neatly compartmentalize Saint Bernadette as a genre-specific band. Certainly the music smolders with jazz influences, but there are also elements of 60s rock, soul, and a kind of hip lounge (if lounge embraced a fearless, "point of no return" attitude). DiMenna’s voice channels the melodramatic lilt and smoky sass of a Grace Slick-Peggy Lee hybrid, without the unsettling romp through Muzak territory that contemporary jazz often breeds. Her bold presence and big, infectious vocals filled the backroom of the Lower East Side’s 11th Street Bar. For songs like "Beat Dialogue," the tiny space was well-suited—dimly lit, haphazardly arranged café tables, the lingering ghosts of smoke-filled years past; however, other tracks seemed to fall prey to the venue’s size, creating a forced intimacy that did little justice to the band’s rock-happy tracks. Nonetheless, SB proved themselves troopers, chatting easily with friends and fans, and maintaining a gracious temperament (even when their set was cut short due to "excessively loud rockin'").
Saint Bernadette performed selections from their debut album, In the Ballroom, as well as several yet-to-be-released tracks. They closed their set with a cover of David Bowie’s "It Ain’t Easy." Tuesday’s show was the first of a series of free performances at the 11th Street Bar (21+). The next show is scheduled for Tuesday, October 23rd at 9:00pm.

Saint Bernadette just released their debut album, In the Ballroom last week (Oct 2nd) on Exotic Recordings. Judging from their tour dates and schedules, I thought the band is based out of New York, but in fact, are from Bridgeport, Connecticut. It's also in Bridgeport that they recorded their debut album, in an abandoned ballroom (which was named after their album).
I thought the album sounds really polished and professional for a debut album - that is until I found out that Meredith, Touch, and Sala, were previously in another band called The Saucers.
The Saucers did manage to release one EP called Eternal Intermission (does this mean they broke up?) in 2003 before forming Saint Bernadette in 2006.
What I really like about In the Ballroom is that my first impression is that the vocals reminded me of Beth Gibbons (Portishead), but minus the trip-hop. My favorite song off the album is called "Dialogue Beat", which really felt like modern Jazz, especially with the cello bass.
PS, check out the Saucers' video for Late Bloomer...
UPDATE: St Bernadette's video for "Sidestep", directed by Tim Spellman.[1]
