What's funny is that I've been watching Medium Season 4, and there is this 80s dream-flashback by Allison DuBois' daughter Ariel, reminding me of how popular Crowded House was in the 80s (check out the Tears for Fears and Duran Duran poster on the door too!). Allison at age 15, can be seen crying and singing to Crowded House's "Don't Dream It's Over" on the second episode of Season 4. If you haven't seen Medium, you should definitely check it out. I got hooked on it via hulu (older shows can be rented via Netflix).

Neil Finn - There is A Light that Never Goes out

Neil Finn is possibly most famous from being the frontsman for the 80s/90s band, Crowded House - named after a shared rental house with five other band members. By 1987, the Melbourne band had a massive hit with "Don't Dream It's Over" on US radio, or otherwise known by most people as that "Hey now, hey now" song (which I've always thought they were singing "head-on", which made no sense). The song was quickly followed by another hit song, "Something So Strong", thus making them not a "one-hit-wonder".

Admittedly, although I do own some random singles and their greatest hits album, Recurring Dream, they were not on my radar until a few years ago when I had heard that Neil Finn teamed up with Johnny Marr for a live rendition of "There is a Light that Never Goes Out", for Neil's very important project 7 Worlds Collide (named after a Crowded House song, "Distance Sun").

7 Worlds Collide is basically a super group project, a collection of musical talents from around the world - all in a charity for the Medicins Sans Frontiers. Some of the talents included Johnny Marr (The Smiths), Lisa Germano (4AD recording artist), Jim Moginie (Midnight Oil), and Eddie Vedder (Pearl Jam). It was a great project, and seven years later, the sequel: The Sun Came Out is released.

This time, the new album will be benefiting Oxfam, and includes even more powerhouse artists: Marr again, Germano again, Ed O'Brien & Phil Selway* (of Radiohead), KT Tunstall, Don McGlashan, Bic Runga, Glenn Richards, Jeff Tweedy (Wilco), etc.

I feel like the original 7 Worlds Collide, that these albums are family affair. Not just fellow like-minded musicians, but also features the Finns musical family. For instance, including Neil, we also have Neil's wife, Sharon (Sharon Johnson was a backup singer for Crowded House), brother Tim Finn (who served with Neil in Split Enz and the Finn Brothers), and son Liam Finn (who, in his own right, is made some noise with his debut album I'll Be Lightning a few years ago).

Although there are the familiar of cast and themes, this studio album contain new songs, not just covers. I eagerly listened to Johnny Marr & Radiohead tracks ("Learn To Crawl" and "The Ties That Bind Us"). I was surprise to hear that it is Selway that is singing on the later song! He has such a calming voice!

Speaking of surprises, Neil's wife, Sharon Finn, does a great job on her songs. They put her track early on, "Little By Little" and I just love the harmony she does.

However, I think for most people, they will be instantly drawn to Jeff Tweedy of Wilco fame. His song, "You Never Know", will definitely stand out on the album - considering it is such a great song. That song earned Wilco their #1 AAA hit song in over twelve years, for their self-titled 2009 album.

There is a single disc edition of The Sun Came Out, but for only a few more dollars, you should get the double-disc set. The album was made available in Australia in August - but for the US, you'll have to wait until September 27^th via amazon. Remember proceeds goes to charity - so buy a few for Christmas gifts!

* PS, I have interviewed Phil Selway live on KFRS 90.7FM before. I had spent the previous night written out questions for Thom Yorke or Johnny Greenwood - and of course, they were all tossed out when I discovered that I will be getting Selway instead. It was a terrible interview, but Phil, we love you just the same!

News: Manic Street Preachers' "Journal for Plague", Perez Hilton on tour, Radiohead still exists

Fan-favorite Manic Street Preachers will be back with Journal for Plague Lovers, which all of the UK critics (Mojo, Q Magazine, Uncut, Sunday Times, The Guardian) have unanimously agreed that this is their best album yet.

Title of the new album is named after Richey Edwards' journal, whose lyrics and notes have written the entire Journal for Plague Lovers album! Yes, Edwards disappeared in 1995 (people have pronounced him dead as a possible suicide). I believe he drowned himself in River Severn, however conspiracists thinks he's still alive - like Elvis is alive.... Anyway, I remember even before his death, he guy was crazy! He often cut and scar his arms and not too shy about it either.

Well, if you pre-order the album, you'll get it by 9/15/09 - however, the digital version of the album, you will get right away if you want to hear the album now. The $10 digital order also comes with a bonus digital remixed album, available 9/15.

Of course, they're be on tour to promote the album in the US. I believe the album's already out in the UK.

"The most revered and feared celebrity blogger" Perez Hilton apparently loves music. Other people I've spoke with at SXSW (where Perez Hilton hosted his own shows), have remarked to me that he tends to like "pop shit" - such as help made Katy Perry, Lady Gaga, and Mika, into stars.

Well Perez Hilton have gathered a few artists on an upcoming tour, all the details are on perezhiltonpresents.com. For critics who calls it 'pop shit', the lineup will prove them wrong, especially because we love the co-headliners Ladyhawke and Ida Maria.

I'm am assuming Hilton will be there to MC the event/introduce the band - so if you're a celebrity blogger trainspotter, you should check out a show.

We've been recording for a while, and this was one of the first we finished. We're pretty proud of it.

Radiohead - Harry Patch (In Memory Of)

I am aware there are a lot of Radiohead fans on W♥M, so I thought I'd mention a recent release by Radiohead called 'Harry Patch (In Memory Of)'.

It is a tribute to Harry Patch, who died on 25th July 2009, aged 111. He was the last surviving veteran of World War 1. The song swept me off my feet as it is a fitting tribute to a man, who in later life became a convincing anti-war campaigner and a powerful critic of all wars in general. I have no intention of posting the song on here. Buy it as it only costs £1 and the money goes to the Royal British Legion, 'a UK charity providing help and welfare to the serving and ex-Service community and their families'.

I have expressed in the past that I am an old-school Radiohead fan, meaning that I'm not particularly fond of their venture into the electronic venue via Kid A and beyond. It would seem that the main reason behind why they left rock-pop music behind was because singer Thom Yorke's taste in music have drastically changed since OK Computer.

Despite releasing three electronic albums (pre-In Rainbows), Yorke continues to write songs that doesn't quite fit into the Radiohead universe. So a few years ago, he released a solo album called The Eraser. I did download the album prior to its release, but eventually did pick up the physical CD because I felt the prices were really decent (under $10).

What's interesting is the album was released under a cardboard digipack (no plastics), under the strict direction of Yorke, who's become somewhat of an environmentalist (remember when the band refused to tour, citing that touring causes "ridiculous consumption of energy"*?) Er, Thom, have you noticed the actual CD is made of plastic?

Anyway, the reason why I'm even talking about Thom Yorke is because his Eraser Rmxs is finally made available domestically on CD last Tuesday. The remix album was already available in the UK (and possibly Japan), last year - although the release was plagued with postponement, delays, cancellations, rescheduling, etc.

Again, not to put a fine a point on it, but I'm not really a remix fan, but I figure if you like Radiohead or love Thom's solo efforts, you're going to enjoy this regardless. Enjoy the original mix and remix of "Black Swan" (there are two remixes of "Black Swan" on Eraser Rmxs.)

I thought I would do something different for gathering news, since you may have noticed an absent of the weekly news. News will now be delivered though Links, from a variety of music news sources. I think the "links" links actully have a feed, so you can subscribe to this using your favorite rss newsreader. I personally use google reader myself, with about 500+ items every hour!

BO DIDDLEY
Topping the music news is the death of Bo Diddley from heart failure on June 2^nd. This R&B/Blues artist got his start in 1951 playing at the 708 Club in Chicago, Illinois. By 1955, Bo recorded some demos, "I'm a Man" and "Bo Diddley", the later went on to become a #1 R&B hit.

His early songs made him so famous, that he was asked to be on the Ed Sullivan show, but was eventually banned from subsequent appearance when he played "Bo Diddley" instead of a cover song of "Sixteen Tons".

That didn't end his career, instead Bo went onto record more hits.... and the rest is history.

Random vu-thoughts: it would seem to me that Bo Diddley had a passion for pop culture and genre, take for instance his "western" themed album titles: Have Guitar Will Travel (based on the western tv show "Have Gun - Will Travel") and Bo Diddley is a Gunslinger (with the title track having references to the famous shoot-out at the OK Corral). Later on, he would also have his "beach/surf" theme: Surfin' with Bo Diddley and Bo Diddley's Beach Party, all probably inspired by the teen-movie Beach Party.

The Get Out Clause - Paper

UNDER SURVEILLANCE
I also wanted to talk about the innovative video by The Get Out Clause. My my understanding, the band wanted to shoot a music video, but didn't have the finance - so they thought up the idea to have surveillance cameras film them in performance. Under the Freedom of Information Act, they requested the footage of their appearances and pieced together their video for "Paper".

The video became viral and have spread all over the UK press and picked up by NPR, making the band an instance success overnight! (That was in May).

With all the interests, you can pick up their EP, to be released July 7^th and "hand made by the band". Judging from the picture of the pre-order, it looks very cool.

Anyway, I think their video is such a cool idea, but I can't help but feel uneasy how "big brother" England's become, no?

Brendan James officially releases The Day Is Brave this Tuesday. I've previously talked about his new album and EP and judging from readers' comments, they really love this guy.

I'm looking at Amazon's "Customers who bought this also bought": Duffy, Death Cab for Cutie, and Jack Johnson, so you get the general idea just how popular James is.

Radiohead - Let Down

Radiohead is having their first ever Best Of collection out on their former EMI Records. Since I have all their albums and there's nothing new in this release, I probably won't pick up the album. There are two version: a single disc and a 2-disc set, the later disc containing such hits (with fans) as "You", "How To Disappear Completely", and "Let Down".

Radiohead apparently have been fighting against this release, and Thom Yorke is pretty unhappy about it, stating in the magazine Word:

We haven't really had any hits so what exactly is the purpose? There's nothing we can do about it. The work is really public property now anyway, in my head at least. It's a wasted opportunity in that if we'd been behind it, and we wanted to do it, then it might have been good.

That's not exactly true, Radiohead did have some chart success with "Creep" (their best-known work), "Paranoid Android", and "No Surprises".

Weezer - Pork and Beans

Radiohead's sound may have changed and evolved to their current experimental sound - but one band that doesn't want to evolve is Weezer. Their new album Weezer (The Red Album) is out on Geffen on Tuesday.

I'm sorry to say that I'm less than excited about their lack of a title (following their previously two releases of Weezer (the Blue Album) and Weezer (The Green Album)) and it seems to me that the band is just rehashing the album that made them famous: the Blue album.

Clearly the superior album that they need to imitate is Pinkerton, a commercial disaster, but much-loved by hardcore fans.

I do really respect Rivers and Patrick Wilson (I love this guy), but I just think the cover art and album title just doesn't ring excitment - at least for me anyway.

Admittedly, their video for "Pork & Beans" is actually pretty funny. It mixes a bunch of meme/viral videos together, so you'll recognize that dramatic prairie dog, to the "Will it Blend", to that Numa Numa kid, etc. Strangely it is missing the Rick Roll, because that would be awesome to see Rick Astley in a Weezer video.

Update: Apparently Weezer's had Tay Zonday to cover their "Pork & Beans" song. The video was uploaded last night for promotion for today's release. I have a soft spot in my heart for Zonday because he is from Minneapolis (I just wish they'd put a mic there so he can pull his head away to breath).

There's also a Radiohead DVD being released today in the USA, but like the "best-of" album and the previously released box set, it's not endorsed by the band. It's being released by their former record label, no doubt in retaliation for dropping them in favor of XL Recordings.

I think I'll pick up the DVD, even though I have some of their videos from 7 Television Commercials and various compilation such as the Director's Label. Like a lot of things, the packaging and pricing does factor in, so if it's too expensive, I may just skip out on it.

Here are the Top 7 most talked about musicians on W♥M (based on tags).

The winner is Morrissey (14 tags) and The Smiths (11 tags), which is all my fault as every possible opportunity presents itself - I will mention the great Mozzer.

Radiohead came in second with 11 tags, obviously because of the news they generated by giving away their album, In Rainbows for any price you can afford.

Belle & Sebastian also made a few appearance, mostly because I love them and they recently gave away "Are You Come Over for Christmas" as an xmas gift.

And as usual, Stars are heavily covered by a few of us. Most recently appearing as a Top 7 Concert and also Most Favorite song with 15 people marking "This Charming man" cover as a favorite.

Blur made some appearances, with some stories such as Blur to finally reunite with Coxon? and Blur Drummer Running for Office in London. By the way, Dave Rowntree didn't win the election.

Obviously we're all big fans of 80s alternative, so it's really no surprise that The Cure made it on the list.

Shockingly, Avril Lavigne made it on this list with over six mentions. It started with The Rubinoos suing Lavigne over her "hey hey you" bit in her hit song "Girlfriend".

If you're one of the million of people that downloaded Radiohead's In Rainbows, you may have noticed that they didn't include any artwork with the MP3s.

This is very annoying. Fortunately the folks at Tube.hk have uploaded the front and back cover.

I have quickly listened to it - and I have to say that of all the songs, I did like "Bodysnatchers" the best.

For further reviews, I'm 100% sure that there are a billion reviews out there on the internet. Everybody is talking about this album. There's no escaping it.

The best news I've heard is that Oasis, The Charlatans, and NIN have all decided to give away their next album for free.

So, as you know, I am a pretty big Radiohead fan (not as hardcore as certain people I know, but I more fan than the average listener).

I was first introduced to Radiohead through, I think, Melody Maker. Radiohead came slightly before Britpop, and I remember "Creep" having a huge impact on me on MTV's 120 Minutes. By the time I saw them again doing "Anyone Can Play Guitar" on MTV Beach House, I knew I was hooked.

Prior to The Bends being released in '95, I was already working at KFSR 90.7 FM as a regular DJ and was offered the opportunity to interview the band (which obviously I jumped all over it). I had prepared all my questions for Thom or Jonny and had already memorized all the songs off The Bends.

Of course, needless to tell you, I didn't get either of those gents, but instead got Phil Selway.

We chatted live on the radio and obviously all improvised because all my prepared questions were useless. I do remember that Phil dropped the F-bomb, which was really funny because we could've gotten fined for that.

Anyway, so in celebration of In Rainbows, coming out via download very soon and a boxset in December, I have decided to talk about Radiohead deluxe packages. We're not talking about promos, these are deluxe versions of their albums that anyone can buy in stores.

This tradition didn't really happen until fairly recently - when sales started to slump, the record company decided it was a good idea to release a more expensive version for the fans. Which I thought was a great idea, because I rather have something special than a standard jewel-cased CD.

All the special packages started the release of Kid A in 2000. As with all the Radiohead artwork and direction, this specially designed hard glued 9 page children's book was by Stanley Donwood (and probably Thom Yorke).

The book contains paintings and a brief text on top.

With Amnesiac, this was a nice-sized hardback red book, complete with a library card and such. I thought I read somewhere that they actually wanted to use real pages from various books, but had changed their minds when it was critized that they were encouraging destroying books.

By the way, this special edition actually won a Grammy for "Best Recording Package".

Hail to the Thief was designed as a special fold-out map. This was actually pretty cool, but kind of worthless. Apparently, the poster is supposed to be a roadmap, referencing the Bush Administration's 2003 plan for peace between Israelis and Palestinians (but it just looks like a painted map to me).
