If you were a teen during the 80s, it was hard to not fall in love with some of his movies, including Ferris Bueller's Day Off, The Breakfast Club, Sixteen Candles, and Pretty in Pink. When I was talking about (500) Days of Summer, I almost reference Hughes' undeniable influences on the movie and soundtrack, but I did not want to make that assumption since I haven't seen the movie.
Not really much to add to the news, but apparently he was visiting families in Manhattan and suffered a heart attack during a morning walk.
As you know, I am a huge fan of popular culture, and I did grow up and fondly remember these movies. Some of them, in particular the Pretty in Pink soundtrack, introduced me to a world of alternative music.
Pet Shop Boys (official / myspace) has announced their epic return to the US, just in time for their 25th anniversary of their first release of One More Chance and West End Girls in 1984. Their official 10th studio album, Yes, will also be making its debut on one of my favorite record label, Astralwerks.

Baxendale (the link is pointing to myspace, as their regular website, musicforgirls.co.uk is not functioning), are an electro-dance trio from London, consisting of Tim Benton (main singer, programmer), Senay Sargut (the staple hot girl with the synth keyboards), and Alex Mayor (who actually plays guitars!). They've managed to release one album, the wonderfully named, You Will Have Your Revenge (2001).
This is one of my favorite album, I must've worn it out, listening to it constantly in my car. My favorite track is "Music For Girls", but it's simply too good and not sissy enough. Plus, to be honest, I'm a little tired of hearing it.
I've always wanted to use "I Love the Sound of Dance Music, Pt.1-2" on music compilations, but the song is nearly ten minutes long (9:48). So the song I've put on is edited (it is only part 1). Trust me, you don't really want to hear the second part, which is just Tim talking (not singing) about how his older sister used to listen to dance music and it goes on and on.
As a special bonus, I'm including another song, it's a short "Dogs & Cats" song that Tim made live on BBC Radio. It's just some mash-ups using ringtones, samplings, and scratching.
Bonus: Download Baxendale - Battery Acid at www.magistery.com. I'm running on battery acid, whoooa! Just sit back and WATCH ME GO!
I have all their LP releases, Electronic (1991), Raise the Pressure (1996), and Twisted Tenderness (1999). My favorite album is Raise the Pressure, partly because I only paid $2.95 for it used (what a deal!).
The band first released "Getting Away With It", which ended up being their most famous single. I think in the US of A, however, "Disappointed" might have been the more popular... only because it's Neil that's singing and everybody probably thought it was the latest Pet Shop Boys song.
So, the track I have picked out is "Idiot Country", which is probably the closest thing you're going to hear Bernard Sumner doing rap. You have to give him props for trying at least.
Trivia: Belle & Sebastian mentioned them in "Seymour Stein": "I heard dinner went well. You liked Chris's jacket, he reminded you of Johnny, before he went Electronic". That's Johnny, as in Johnny Marr.
Bonus: I have included a photoshopped Bernard Sumner as a rapper.
By the way, this is Vu. I do not have split personalities!
