Suburban Noize Records have been around since the mid-90s, catering to a very certain market of young hip hop, herb culture, and punk fans. We have a few items from them for review.
For starter, SubNoize Souljaz (myspace) is like the all-star supergroup, consisting of 15 or so Suburban Noize artists, including members of Kottonmouth King, Big B, and Jared Gomes (singer of Hed PE).
Their third album, Blast From The Past, just dropped late last August. While I am unfamiliar with some of these titles, I almost knew all the cover songs from hearing them on the radio. Except this album are all done in the style of that only Subnoize can deliver. With the variety of rappers and lead singers - the music is somewhat uneven, but at least the vocals stands out from each other. Particularly, I was impressed with Judge D's cover of LL's "Mama Said Knock You Out" and a funky The Dirtball's cover of RATM's "Microphone Fiend" (the bass is really good on this song) and Slick Rick's "Children's Story" by Daddy X.
It's evident that these guys owe a lot to influential bands that came before them (NWA, 2Pac, Snoop, Dre), so this album is a tribute to them. If you like old-school rap, particularly Death Row Records, as much as anyone that grew up in the 90s, you will definitely do yourself a favor and check out Blast From The Past.

Anyway, Brokencyde is a "crunk"-core band (apparently this genre is a fusion of hip hop and electro, and possibly other genres like punk and rock). The band embrace the brand, and even have a song called "Get Crunk!".
The album actually did chart on the Billboard 200 at #86, which kind of impressed me, considering that many of the artists I hear about, they never chart. I think the high debut might possibly be due to their presence on this year's US Warped Tour. However, despite the success, the album was critically condemned. My favorite is (name redacted) review from NME: "even if I caught Prince Harry and Gary Glitter adorned in Nazi regalia defecating through my grandmother’s letterbox I would still consider making them listen to this album too severe a punishment." Critics who hates them, I don't think they understand that the album was meant for them... certainly the album is not meant for me. I am curious what the band will sound like when they've matured a bit. Although, I will have to confess that I did smile a bit when I heard "pee pee" sung on "Sex Toys" and "let's get retarded" on "Rockstar".
They look and sound very young (hey, FYI, their singer is called Se7en), which makes their debut album I'm Not a Fan... But the Kids Like It even more-so ironic. I did feel that despite their youngness, that
Stronger songs on the album are: "Freaxxx" (with the catchy "let's get freaky" lyrics), and "Yellow Bus" (boasting about sex with groupies like Miley Cyrus??? WTF!).
If you don't mind the naughty messages, some autotune, some screamo, some electronica, check out I'm Not a Fan... But the Kids Like It at amazon.

Their latest release is Hidden Stash 420, an epic 2-disc album. This is basically a collection of unreleased tracks, b-sides, remixes, demos. The packaging is also nice, it's a fold-out digipak. Hardcore fans will want to purchase the album directly from Subnoize Store or Best Buy stores, as that comes with a bonus DVD called The Lost Adventures of the Kottonmouth Kings.
While it's easy to just dismiss the band as pot smokers, that all their songs about weed, and although it's true, I believe they also deceptively paint a vivid picture of what their lifestyle is like. Check out tracks like "Take a Ride", as it describes California and family, all under a catchy chorus of "west coast is the place for me, never know what you'll see". But it's not all serious, there's a goofy song called "Late Night Call" with cultural reference of "me so horny", "facebook" and "myspace".
The collection is mostly older songs, and it's interesting to see some of their experiments. One song, "Tangerine Sky", seems like it's paying tribute to the Beatles LSD song "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds". "Tangerine Sky" comes off as being more melodic and slower than most of their songs. The other non-conventional KMK is a poppy song "Let the Music Play". I wish I knew the story behind this song, but what I can tell you that it sounds very happy and 60s love. Perhaps Jackson Five?
Anyway, my favorites are usually the faster-constantly rapping songs with a loopy DJ backback, like "Evolution" and "Got It Get It". The later is a new Kingspade (a division of Kottonmouth King's rap duo, Johnny Richter and D-Loc) venture, which may be important for fans, as they haven't released anything under Kingspade in the last two years.
Hidden Stash 420 is out now. A perfect Christmas gift for any stoner in your family.

Never fear, the people in my office do get to hear it, be it recycled through my brain and translated into sallyvoice.
Impossible, is the debut album by Bristol band, Bronze Age Fox. For starters, individually the tracks are diverse, but also as a whole, the album is quite different from anything I've heard. I see names like Simian, Boo Radleys and Phoenix being batted about and I can see where they're coming from, but I wouldn't say the similarities are exact.
I'm quite enjoying the mellowness of it all. The jangly synth sounds, especially in Denizens Of The Deep and Pinstripe. The track that most closely resembles hard-ish rock is Hidden Track, but it's still quite mellow with lovely lady backing vocals. Bouncy, pretty, poppy, perfect dancing material.
Is it bad that the very beginning of the track You Wouldn't Want Me To Lie makes me picture Mr G from a certain Summer Heights High? Well it does. You probably have no idea what I'm talking about, right? ok. However, after the first few bars, after I've gotten that image out of my head, the song steers away from the effeminate male drama teacher sound to a more hearty and textured song.
- The NME described them as “possibly our (UK’s) classiest leftfield pop band”
- A previous release in the form of a compilation album of some of their singles was cunningly called ‘Compilation’.
- David Edwards (drummer and programmer) has received very critical acclaim for his solo side project, Minotaur Shock.
- Dominic Jones (singer) has been "singing like a girl" as electronic artist Red Setter.
- Thom Stone (guitar) has been kept busy trying to keep Amy Winehouse out of trouble as her tour manager.
- Will Edwards (bass) has been playing bass for Minotaur Shock (his brother) on his live jaunts.
Overall, if we're talking opinions, I think Bronze Age Fox are brilliant. I'd crank this and do some serious vacuuming any day... or better still... spending an hour or so laying in a park in the sun listening via personal music device (as i type this on a cold raining wintery night)... Bliss.

Anyway, back to what I'm meant to be saying.
Fonda 500 are a 5-piece heralding from sunny Hull in England and according to my research Je M'appelle Stereo is their sixth album release. If you happen to live in sunny England or have ever been a fan of the amazing TV series Teachers (which, may i say, was mostly made amazing by it's soundtrack), you may already be familiar with these guys. However, me, sitting in windy Sydney, have not had the pleasure until today.
How can I describe what I'm listening to? Well, it's a fantastic mixture of synthesised and real instruments. It slightly reminds me of the Super Furry Animals, but less kooky. The vocals contain a strong but subtle lead with well placed harmonies. Let's just say....that compared to most of the indie/pop/rock (whatever you want to call it) bands that come out these days, it is obvious that Fonda 500 have a wealth of experience behind them in the field of musicology. In simple terms, what I'm trying to say is that, although the subjects of some of the songs are quite unserious, the vocals are quite the opposite. That is, they are obviously being performed by someone who is not a spotty teenager who decided to form a band to try with the aim to either pull some birds and/or be front page of the NME.
There's elements of many genres in this album. The tracks: Je M'appelle Stereo and Super Dots & Lights, would be totally suited to a cheesy britpop club (if someone was silly enough to give me a spot as a dj). I ♥ Stereo Cos Stereo's Good For Me is a short foray into electronic beats. Come Alight and Silver Sounds are beautiful and soothing tunes that would be best suited to lying in a park on a sunny afternoon.... and Music Should Always Be Played By The Hands Of The Animals is one of those songs that if you were sitting in a dark room alone you'd be checking your back a while for talking animals with guitars.... maybe i've lost the point there a little, but I do admit I'm freaked out very easily (see the video below and you'll see what I mean).
Fonda 500 are: Simon (Vocals), Nicholas (Guitar) Bod (Bass), Ian (Drums) and Jonee (Guitar); and you can get a sample of Fonda 500 on their myspace page.... Better still....you can get a free Fonda 500 gift if you mill about at: http://www.recordmountain.com/ .... or you can just keep an eye out for Je M'appelle Stereo in your local music store as it's due for release very soon indeed.
Now, I must go and track down some of their other stuff.

I love this song, and lately it's been playing nonstop on my iPod since Reverend and the Makers's debut album The State of Things, released September 2007 (I actually don't have their album because I refuse to pay $31 for an import).
"Heavyweight Champion of The World" was the first single from them, released last May. You may recall that Mads was all over them when all they had were a handful demos...
Mads wrote:
Many people believe they are the next big band in the UK. Let's see after a year, shall we..
I believe they have finally made it.
The debut single did so well for them, it made it to the top 10 the UK singles chart as well as top 10 on iTunes UK (note: not available in the US). Since I live here, I can tell you that no one in the US have heard of these guys... but with the right marketing and touring, I predict they are going to be a household name with such acts like Travis, Arctic Monkeys, and Coldplay.
That's pretty much it... oh they are going to set out on tour in February:
- 02/19/2008 GLASGOW ABC1
02/20/2008 MIDDLESBROUGH TOWN HALL
02/21/2008 SKEGNESS EMBASSY THEATRE
02/23/2008 LINCOLN ENGINE SHED
02/24/2008 BRADFORD UNIVERSITY
02/25/2008 WARRINGTON PARR HALL
02/26/2008 LONDON ROUNDHOUSE
They also mentioned that they'll be playing at the NME Award, which I'm 95% sure they're going to win for best new band.

Belle & Sebastian that well-loved band from Glasgow, Scotland, are back with a new Christmas song called "Are You Coming Over for Christmas?". The song is available for download on their official myspace on Christmas day.
Fans of B&S should already have their special Christmas Peel Session from 2002, but in case you don't have it, here the Christmas tracks from that session:
- Oh Come All Ye Faithful
- Christmas Time Is Here
- Santa Claus (The Sonics)
- Santa Claus Go Straight To The Ghetto (James Brown)
- Silent Night
- O Little Town Of Bethlehem
- Santa Bring My Baby Back To Me (Elvis Presley)
- O Come O Come Emmanuel
- I Took Some Time For Christmas
- The Twelve Days of Christmas
Here's another Christmas song from one of our favorite, The Pipettes. Good luck on finding this 7" single, as there were only two hundred of them made (by hand) and was only available at their Christmas show in 2004. The song, "In the Bleak Midwinter", is an old Lutheran Christmas Hymn, originally written by Gustav Holst.
They're currently on tour through Australia, but they still managed to put together a "Bandzine" The Pipettes Christmas Zine just time for Christmas. I did download the PDF file and it looks very professional for a bandzine.
Tour dates as follows:
12/29/07 The Factory Sydney, AUS
12/30/07 Tasmania Falls Festival Victoria, AUS
12/31/07 Tasmania Falls Festival Victoria, AUS
01/02/08 East Bruswick Melbourne, AUS
01/05/08 Southbound Festival Western Australia
Meanwhile, Manic Street Preachers is also offering a new Christmas song called "Ghost of Christmas" on their myspace. This is an original song with some jab at expensive technologies::
No xbox and no computers
We just used our imagination
A leather football was perfection
What more could you want
I wouldn't mind a soccer ball to play outside, but unfortunately it's snowing outside so I'm going to stay indoors with my PS3 :)
Anyway, the band is still around, releasing Send Away The Tigers on February 2007, and is actually the only album I don't have from this band. I guess, I'm just waiting to find it really cheap/used and there's really no compelling reason for me to rush out to get the album.
I think the only song I know off of it is "Your Love Alone Is Not Enough" (that song with the Cardigans singer Nina Persson) which I think is quite popular.
Apparently so popular that NME have named MSP the 2008 "God Like Geniuses" Award.
Finally, remember the awesome Strawberry Fair (Jenny Franzén)? Lately she's been busy with her live band with: Mathias (Kissing Mirrors, Sarto, Twig), Alice (After School Sports, The Never Invited to Parties), David (The Morning Paper), Ida (The Bridal Shop), Maria (The Happy Birthdays[W♥M]), appearing on Digfi playing some Christmas songs.
The two songs she did was "Let it Snow! Let it Snow! Let it Snow!" and "Winder Wonderland". I thought you can only watch it on Windows Media Player, but I was told that it will work on a mac using flip4mac.
The band was also recently on Rip It Up! 2007, you can watch some clips on youtube.
PS, this may be the last xmas post from me! You're welcome!

Chuck Norris Fact
Guns don't kill people, Chuck Norris kills people! |
Here's the deal, I'm clearing out about 30 album reviews this month, so I can get a fresh start in 2008. So basically, I'm threatening you with MULTIPLE posts per day. This is my 348th post (my goal is 365 prior to December 31st).
Anyway. What's your favorite Chuck Norris Facts?
Mine's:
Why didn't they find Weapons of Mass Destruction in Iraq?
Because Chuck Norris lives in Texas.
Massimo Fiorio compiled a bestselling Italian book called I Fermenti lattici dello yogurt di Chuck Norris sono tutti morti (the title suggest something to do with death and yogurt????).
Fiorio is the bassist for Canadians, a strange name for a band consisting of Italians! They're setting out on a long tour starting today (Nov 4th) and looking at their calendar, they're doing SXSW 2008 and MTV Italia.
I'm also very glad to see that the song they've chosen for their single is "Summer Teenage Girl", my favorite song off A Sky With No Stars. They're offering the song as a free download from their official website.
I've read that their debut EP The North Side of Summer (released in late 2005) garnered amazing reviews from traditional magazines and blogs & webzines. I don't think you can buy the EP anymore. I know the initial pressing the bands produced were completely sold out.
Then they entered in the Heineken Jammin' Contest in 2006 and was eventually featured as a "Breaking Band" in the NME (resulting in being the first Italian bands to get reviewed in their Breaking Band column).
So obviously the song of choice is "Summer Teenage Girl", but I also wanted to draw your attention to "15th of August" which is another favorite song off the album. It has a great intro to the song that will perk you up. I'm almost going to guess that the song writer probably wrote it on August 15th of this year?
So, the debut album is called A Sky with no Stars and released by Ghost Records. Apparently the single for Summer Teenage Girl is very, very limited. There's only 100 copies produced. You can pick up the single here for €6,50 EUR. That's like $5000 or something.

I was sitting back watching more coverage of Glastonbury when it suddenly occurred to me that I actually have a mental image of the whole layout of Glastonbury superimposed in my mind. I could literally walk you from stage to stage...
I won't...
Day two of the biggest music festival in the UK has seen some of awesome bands on all of the main stages but I'll start by talking about Amy Winehouse (Website, Myspace) who featured on the Jazzworld stage.
Winehouse has been over described by most of the music magazines to the extent that a rather simple down-to-earth pint drinking gal appears to be almost schizophrenic on their pages. She is one of the leading lights of British soul music and has more balls than most of girl power groups. Her set went down a treat with the viewing audience and rightly so!
My favourite moment of the day (I am still pretending I am there) was the sex god of the mods, Paul Weller (Website). His time on stage was made all the better by the presence of Ocean Colour Scene's Damon Minchella (Fired from the group in 2003) and Steve Cradock, two mighty fine guitarists. A Town Called Malice has never sounded sweeter.
The award for best attempt at crowd surfing goes to Lovefoxxx from CSS (Website, Myspace), who successful managed to lose her head band in the process. Like everybody who performs at Glastonbury, the Brazilian group played in awe of the festival itself.
With tickets for Glastonbury costing £145 these days, I almost feel sorry for the hippies who attend for the spiritual side of the festival. But one glance at the faces in the crowd and all criticisms of the growing commercialisation of the festival are thrown to one side. Glastonbury makes people happier. Drunk, drugged up and happier.
Maximo Park (Website, Myspace) impressed me on the Pyramid Stage with a confident performance. Impressed and surprised me. However even more spectacular was the sight of a sea of people singing along to the instrumental stylings of Rodrigo y Gabriela (Website, Myspace).
Bat for Lashes were awesome on the John Peel stage and I am really looking forward to seeing them live now. If you don't own their album, I highly recommend you pop it on your wishlist if nothing else.
All in all, rock was pretty well represented in the lineup this year. One of the advantages of watching from home is the late night special performances in the BBC tent. It was with some delight I witnessed Calvin Harris sing along to an acoustic version of his track, The Girls. Another treat was hearing the Canadian poet and hip hopster K'Naan (Website, Myspace) for the first time. He has secured a place on my wish list.
Back to the big bands, the Kooks (Website, Myspace) were the penultimate act on the Pyramid stage. I've never been caught up in the fuss surrounding the Kooks. In my opinion, there are pretty average but you have to appreciate Jackie's Big Tits. The Killers (Website, Myspace) finished off the night. They were, well, The Killers. You either love them, hate them or stalk them. Interestingly, David Keuning claimed that when recording a song, the band ponders how the track will sound at Glastonbury.
There is no better way to finish my drunken early morning rambling than with the music of the Brummie band, The Twang (Website, Myspace). This group has been nominated by NME as "the Group of 2007". Putting that cursed title to one side, The Twang are pretty damn good. They have an additive from the gutter sound. The Streets gone rock. Poetic and working class. Definitely my one of the highlights of my festival experience. - Ryan.

I was just about ready to burn some mixes for my little bro's stag party this weekend when, as if timed to perfection, the new Headliners CD arrived through my letterbox.
It claims to offer the ultimate Festival line-up and in fairness if you attend any of the major festivals in the UK this summer you are likely to see, at least, three or four acts that appear on this collection. On disk one you have all your big players from the Anglo-American rock scene from Oasis to Muse to the Kings of Leon. While disk two features the likes of Calvin Harris, Faithless and Mylo.
How effective was Headliners in wetting my appetite for this year's live music? Surprisingly so, considering my taste in music has mellowed to the extent Young Ryan would have mugged the manbag of Old Ryan without a second thought.
Due to the restrictions of record labels, you'll never find the perfect compilation cd in the stores, full of all your favourite anthems. However this collection of tracks is as good as it gets and I know it will be a rip roaring success when I play it on repeat at my Bro's drink-fueled stag party.
Of course, as any wise festival goer will know, the big bands that feature in this compilation are the eye candy that guarantees an enjoyable festival on the main stages. The real joy of live festival music is stumbling upon the next big thing on the minor stages. If you are looking for that sort of spiritual guidance, look else where.
As the festival season commences with Glastonbury next weekend, these are the sort of acts you expect to see but by the end of the summer, you may possibly have a whole different range of wants and needs.
In these modern times, given the availability of music online and the ability to create your own playlists quickly and effectively I am left wondering if there is really a demand for this Headliners CD. Well, lets face it, there will always be lazy folks out there and there will always be people who just want to listen to something without having to create it themselves. If you fall into either of these categories, then this compilation is for you!
At the end of the day, this isn't high-brow folk music. This is the loud, brash sound of 2007 combined with some of the old festival classics, and despite my better judgement, I like it!
This compilation is available in the UK & USA on 18th June 2007.
Enjoy your festivals wisely people!! - Ryan

NME presents The Essential Bands – Festival Edition was just released on June 11th, 2007 (available in America as an import on June 14th).
I didn't know how successful they are, but according to the press release that the first two NME Presents album have sold over 600,000 copies. That's actually really good numbers for the UK because they have different standards for certification of "Platinum" (300,000 copies). For trivia's sake, US Certified Platinum is having 1,000,000 copies sold.
Despite Mr C's protests, we cover quite a few NME-hyped bands, so if you want to check out what they sound like, here are some internal links: Kaiser Chiefs, Razorlight, Jet, Patrick Wolf, The Wombats, and The Cribs.
I am actually kind of working on a concert review for the Maccabees and Noisettes entry. I'll give you a preview: the Noisettes are a scary-looking band! The singer from the Maccabees dances around like he's Ian Curtis!

I was going to post this yesterday, but I'm trying to pace myself (for everyone's sake). I think by now you know I like a few things: covers, discographies, the Smiths, soundtracks, sissymusic, and "old stuff". I thought it was funny that I ran into somebody (in real life, not that I go outside much), he complained that I don't cover new stuff. I think it's important that you know that there are many, many, many websites (especially all those hip cool indie blogs) that covers music news. Of course, when I asked him to join us (to cover music news), he politely declined. So before I regress to more classic rock, I have to gain my street creds by posting a brand new band that I have been enjoying: Howling Bells.
Howling Bells were born from a band called Waikiki. They're originally from Australia, but are currently based out of England. Their current lineup is: Juanita Stein (vocals), Joel Stein (guitar), Brendan Picchio (bass) and Glenn Moule (drums).
Since they're a relatively brand new band, the only thing I know is that their self-titled debut album, Howling Bells, was recorded by Coldplay producer, Ken Nelson. Although the album's been released in the UK and Australia, the album's not available in America... but that did not stop them from touring in the US with the Killers (see limited tour dates). Of course, they mysteriously skipped the mid-west, so I didn't catch them on tour :/

[this is good] Howling Bells were my favourite band of last year, I couldn't get enough of them. I've seen them live twice - once at a pub gig and once supporting Snow Patrol. Both times they blew my mind, but of course the pub gig was more intimate and longer, so was the better of the two. The huge drum sound they get live really impressed me. They got heavy rotation on Australia's indy radio station, Triple J, but never got huge, which surprised me because I think the album was easily the best thing released last year.
