We've been receiving a ton of Christmas/Holiday recordings lately. It's really hard to pick and choose what I'll be writing about in the upcoming week. I might as well get on top of some of these recording. Today we have Kill It Kid (killitkid.com / myspace.com) If they sound familiar to you, that's because we've previously mentioned them before.
Their song, "Just Like Christmas" is a cover of Minnesota's own Low. Since we're from Minnesota, this is worth checking out. You can download your own copy in a variety of formats (including flac) over at www.killitkidchristmas.com.
The band is finishing up their 2009 tour:Low's ‘Just Like Christmas’ is a great tune, with an understated lyric and tender sentiment that we felt - with all our festive strength - we could break into a duet and still compliment the narrative. So we put it in front of the fire, filled it with cinnamon, brandy, and cranberry sauce and put some spurs on it!-- singer Chris Turpin

MYSPACE MUST DIE!!
As you know, it's the nature of the business, but I have to use myspace because of its deep roots in music. Anyway, by choice, I am using Firefox 2.0. I tried 3.5, I don't like the way it handles scripts ... and there are some themes and extensions that does not work in the latest version, so yes, I'm still clinging on 2.0.
About a few weeks ago, myspace made this boneheaded decision that it wouldn't let you in if you're using old browsers. It's okay, it's not like I actively use myspace, but as the weeks went on, I realized I had to stop ignoring this problem.
So here is the solution for those of you suffering from the same problem (such as all Mac firefox users, apparently): get User Agent Switcher 0.7.2.
This little extension tells myspace, "I'm Internet Explorer 8, let me in!!". If you want to fool it into thinking you're running Firefox 3.0, add the following in "new":
-
Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; ; rv:1.9.0.14) Gecko/2009082707 Firefox/3.0.14
PS, User Agent Switch is also useful when you stumble upon a "members only" forum. You simply change your agent to "Googlebot 2.1".

Pennywise was named after the clown from Stephen King's novel, It. |
Pennywise, the Californian punk band, gave away their latest album, Reason to Believe, for free on myspace as of March 25th.
According to the message, you're supposed to add Textango to your friend's list - but I believe all you need is to have an account and you can download it. (I never added Textango, but I received a message from them regardless!)
It's cool, I don't consider that spam, I'm always happy to check out free music.
After downloading the zip file, I was surprised that they thought to included the booklet (PDF) and the mp3 files were at a high bitrate (320kbps).
I'll be honest and say that I haven't
listened to the whole thing in
detail yet, but a few songs stuck out right away, like "It's Not Enough
To Believe".
The ones that I really liked are really fast and loud (but with melody!) and are pretty much reminds me of early Pennywise, very old-skool.
Get the latest album from Pennywise on myspace.
Speaking of Californian punk, Bad Religion's Greg Graffin will be honored with a Lifetime Achievement in Atheism, Punk Rock, and Science.

The New York Times broke the identity of high-priced call-girl, Kristen, in For an Aspiring Singer, a Harsher Spotlight (March 13, 2008 by Serge F Kovaleski and Ian Urbina).
For those that doesn't live in the US or hasn't kept up with the latest news, Kirsten is in the middle of a sex scandal that caused Eliot Spitzer to step down as New York governor effective March 17, 2008.
I just don't want to be thought of as a monster. This has been a difficult time. It is complicated.
As it turns out, "Kristen" was born Ashley Youmans but now known as Ashley Alexandra Dupré, is an aspiring R&B New York singer.
Upon the breaking news, her myspace was getting over 1 million hits per hour on Thursday (as reported by The First Post) and her Amie Street Profile shot her songs to 98 cents in a matter of minutes, the maximum popularity cost. (The concept behind Amie Street is that unpopular songs are free, but as more people download the song, its cost rises - topping out at 98 cents.)
Noting her sudden popularity, she created her own Facebook fan group, but the page is currently down... possibly to overwhelming interests.
It should be interesting to see more of her in the future to promote her music, now that she's got everyone's attention.

The press release for Soul Merchants classifies their sound as "psychedelic goth rock". Seeing as how I'd never heard that sort of description before, I was curious to find out what they sounded like. After my initial listen, the closest bands out today that I could compare them to would be Interpol and She Wants Revenge.
To be fair, I could compare them to the likes of Joy Division in tone. Soul Merchants were only around from 1985-1987, but they made 100+ recordings and one LP. Based out of Denver, Soul Merchants gained a small and devoted fan-base, and they played their last show at the inaugural SXSW This dual disc collection titled 1985-1987 has over 160 minutes of music spread over two disks. These are only just their cassette releases, that have been remixed and remastered by former Merchant Bob Ferbrache.
The CD I was sent only had 15 songs out of the 40, but it was more than enough for me to pick out a favorites. "Beating Heart" was a favorite because of the awesome drum intro, and the guitar riffs in the background remind me of a 60's psychedelic acid trip, while "Love" reminds me of T-Rex on a downer. "Johanna" was a favorite with everyone who listened to it, and that got the most comparisons to Joy Division. I myself just liked the way that just when I thought it was repetitive, there was some sort of musical surprise. In any case, I'd really like to hear their LP Gates of Heaven. There's talk about that being reissued.
You can stream more Soul Merchants via their Myspace MySpace or visit the Smooch Records webby for more info. You can also purchase 1985-1987 via the iTunes Music Store

Camera Obscura and ABBA both have songs called "Happy New Year", but they are unrelated.
Or are they?
Apparently the ABBA song is from their Super Trouper LP, appearing as the first song on Side B. Guess what? Camera Obscura covered "Super Trouper" (first song on Side A) as their B-Side to Tears for Affairs 7". You can hear Camera Obscura's "Super Trouper" on Cover Lover.
Bert Jansch has a "The Bright New Year" from his album Birthday Blues (1968). If you're interested in reading about Jansch's "Angie" song, check out Marco Mahler - Otmar Elmer, where Mahler explains Spanish/Flamenco chord progressions.
Finally, a very, very loud band called New Years Day ends the list. I've actually heard of this band in 2005 when the first Myspace Records launched. They are one of the few bands that benefitted from the early days of myspace. They built up an audience and was included on the Myspace album.
Obviously I haven't followed their career because I just found out that they have a debut album called My Dear (released in May 2007). Their official website is currently down, but you can always check out their (guess where?) myspace.
Also, check out Dave's My Dear Acquaintance(s)...Happy New Year! if you can't get enough of New Year songs.
Happy New Year!

If you work in a whore house you're gonna get fucked,
If you sleep in a river you're going to get ducked,
If you count all your chickens, you'll die like a dog,
And if you lie to me again I'll take you closer to god.
I wish I could tell you this was another example of crass Americana music but the members of The Broken Family Band all own British passports. Singing songs about booze, women and Jesus, this Cambridge group have brought country music to the British masses at many a festival.
As if seeking forgiveness for the cussing and sinning to be found in most of their albums, the Broken Family Band have released a collection of songs about Jesus. Although, a quick read through the FAQ section on their website suggests their mini-album, Jesus Songs, is more of an in-joke than their personal discovery of our Lord and Saviour, Jesus. H. Christ.
The Broken Family Band consists of Steven, Jay, Mickey, Gavin and, on occasions, Timothy. In total, they have 11 recordings to their name.
I am aware that WHM's resident Mook recently attempted to convert those members who like all types of music except hip-hop and country in his post. I won't be claiming that the Broken Family Band is an antidote to those problems as it is pretty 'much love it or hate it' music.
Personally, I have loved them since 2005 when I caught a glimpse of them at my beloved Green Man Festival and fully intend to love them again at this year's Summer Sundae and Green Man Festival. (I don't care how dodgy that sentence sounds!)
If your taste buds are dampened sufficiently, you'll find more of the good stuff at their website, myspace and last.fm page.
The Broken Family Band records are available via Play.com, Amazon USA, Amazon UK, itunes, emusic...mostly likely not available at Sunday School. - Ryan
