Greetings, dear readers. I hope you are well.
I had a couple of vertebrae fused last October, and so I've been away on a health sabbatical of sorts. The cold weather is not helping! I feel so odd saying that I will welcome some warm temperatures again, especially after we got some lovely snow in my home area last weekend. But when you have metal in your body, or nerve damage, or both, you start feeling the barometric changes more.
I wanted to take a moment to share some other music blogs I have been reading here at VOX. I promise I will be back with more music, including 2NU's last offering. (Who is 2NU? Stay tuned...) But until then, allow me to share some other blogs of interest, including a side project of mine.
Burl Veneer’s blog was spotlighted at [music is good] recently, with his observations on genre labels as a guide to exploring music, particularly with spiritual jazz. It's a retrospective look; according to his profile, he is "recapturing the thrill of [his] college radio years, on a smaller scale." It's a very nice sentiment for those who have become rather jaded with corporate/mainstream music as of late, and are still looking back to younger days when one's music experience was more visceral. I don't mean to say that such leads to an abandoning of new territories in listening opportunities, but for those of us who have outgrown commercial markets and are generally exasperated with what's on the radio airwaves, there is a shift in perspective, is there not? I remember that for myself, I went back for a time to what I had discovered musically in eight long years of college and university and when I had expressed similar thoughts.
(On a side note, it seems to me that many of the resources I looked at when writing reviews here seem to be very similar to what friends of mine looked at writing for university and college publications, or what they played for college radio. But I digress...)
Those that have followed my reviews here know that I'm a big fan of mashups and bastard pop. It's always been a satirical commentary for me, in some part, on how the commercial industry likes to come back to familiar hooks and "radio-friendly" licks-- how else can two or more songs, especially when they seem so radically different, come together? They can come together, all right, in a rather slick way that can express an entirely new idea that is different from the sum of the mashup's parts.
Mashup Fans is one VOX group devoted to the mashup genre. For a time it was active, but sadly, due to recent inactivity ( it appears to have succumbed to the splogger disease that has been infecting VOX like a cancer. If you stick to the Media section, however, you'll find some great mashups and other mixes. Do me a favor, if you're a mashup fan, won't you? Go see if you can turn the tide. Upload some stuff and send Darren a message to see what you can do to revive the group.
Monday Monster Mashup is my side project. When I started the group, the idea was I would post something every Monday, although clearly, I haven't kept it that regular as of late. I've included video mashups that accompany mashup tunes whenever possible, although there are some obstacles. Since Warner Media Group has been throwing its weight around like a 800-lb. gorilla, some of the YouTube videos I've been using have been muted or audio swapped. I don't think this bothers many mashup artists too terribly much; the savvy ones cover their buttocks by urging listeners to support the original artists. Even if they don't make such a noble token gesture, most see the genre as transitory-- if the corporate suits kill a work on grounds of copyright infringement, they will have moved on to something new anyways.
BOOTLEGS and MASHUPS is more oriented to bootlegs, according to the description, although, really, I'm not sure what the focus is right now. If you can follow the rambling posts of late, you're doing better than me. Anyways, two of the hosts, moien and Ground Countrol To Major Tom, run music-oriented blogs in French, and it turns out there is a sizeable community of French-speaking music bloggers here at VOX. The following are written in French, unless otherwise specified:
- The Dude’s Blog (Blog de The Dude) has a general focus-- nothing too specific, but that's fairly within the spirit of things at W♥M-- write about what you like. Obviously, his username is taken from The Big Lebowski, which was referenced by Vu in Just Dropped In (To See What Condition My Condition Was In). His latest post covers his album picks for 2009.
- Aurelio’s blog is a little more general than even that--"Un cocktail de musique, ciné, bouquins, bonne bouffe et rigolade" (A mix of music, film, books, good food, and comedy). He hosts Albums 2009, so some of his latest posts have also been about his selections of music in 2009.
- niggytardust writes in English and French, so if you don't speak/read/write French, you have an English option. More of a rock focus.
- Ground Countrol To Major Tom focuses on new artists and independent music.
- Music Is My Radar is written by moien
Novelty Records is hosted by W. B. Mook, who wrote reviews for W♥M for a time. You know what "novelty songs" are, right? Sure you do! If you don't, according to Wikipedia, it's a genre of music that was coined in Tin Pan Alley to describe a division in popular music that started in 1910 and continued in the '20s and '30s. But to put it more simply, the term includes most anything that has been classified as parody or comedy music. In short, it's just about everything that Dr. Demento has spun on his radio show-- you know, that funny-looking bearded guy with the top hat that helped launch Weird Al Yankovic's music career. (Look for him-- Dr. Demento, that is-- in his music videos and the movie UHF. Have a Twinkie weiner sandwich while you do so, okay? It's good, but not like Yappy's Dog Treats-- I promise!)
So there you have it. I'm probably just scratching the surface, but most of these bloggers and Vox Groups specifically mentioned (if not all) have contributed to W♥M in some form or another, so have a look around.

Negativland's first song-based album in over 28 years is released today, July 15th on their record label, Seeland Records. The album goes by the silly name of Thigmotactic and after first pass at listening to the album, I did enjoy its mix of original music and lyrics, mixed with samples.
In celebration of Thigmotactic, they are making two rare public appearance:
- 07/17/08 Wham City’s Whartscape in Baltimore, MD
07/20/08 H.O.P.E. (Hackers of Planet Earth) conference in NYC
If more dates should appear, I'll update it here. More information can be found on our press announcement page.
Formed in 1979 by their two founding members, Mark Hosler and Richard Lyons, it would seem that Lyons' have taken a seat back with this latest release (however, he does contribute on one song, "Influencial You" on Thigmotactic).
They first rose to fame with that infamous U2 EP incident. Released in 1991, the song featured Casey Kasem blowing his top off, mixed with samples from U2's "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For". Not surprisingly, they went through a long lawsuit battle with U2's record label Island Records, resulting in having the EP deleted. Although that didn't stop people from getting a hold of "bootlegs".
What's interesting to note, in today's context of the remixed generation, is that it's become somewhat normal for people to take things in the media and producing mashups... In some ways, Negativland predate the "viral" media of today with "U2".
So, back to Thigmotactic, this is possible the most accessible album to date. There's something for everyone, but I think the silly sex songs would get people's attention, like "Your Skin is Gelatin" is about vaginas or "Lying on the Grass" is about an unspoken homosexual desire that would cause you to rewatch Brokeback Mountain.
One thing I will say is that it's really hard to use one or two songs to really describe Negativland, as they are always evolving. I ended up using "Richard Nixon Died Today", the song is available for download on their myspace. The song uses excerpts from Dick Nixon's last address speech at the White House, which I believe is public domain.
Their copy/paste music style ranges all over the board, in fact, there's even a 50s inspired song, "Steak on a Whim" that sounds very similar to The Chordettes' "Mister Sandman" (but it's not this song). Most of the music and lyrics on this album is original, which stands apart from their previous releases.
Another thing I wanted to mention is that their liner notes to this CD includes an original art by Hosler for every song. Each artwork reflects each song, for instance, here is the artwork for "By Truck" a fun song about where milk comes from.
Thigmotactic can be bought directly from Negativland, I would recommend the CD version as it comes with a very nice sleek 36 lyric book (with artwork that I previously mentioned in the paragraph above).
Discography
Maude Maggart is the sister of Fiona Apple. |
If you've ever seen my DVD collection, you'll know that I am a pretty big fan of Star Trek. I have previously mentioned how much I love Data from Star Trek and was glad to see that the actor, Brent Spiner, had recorded Ol' Yellow Eyes Is Back. The 1940's pop and showtunes standard album have been out of print for a while, and fans and collectors have paid a lot of money to own an original copy. I would recommend getting a copy of his new, just-released, album, Dreamland before it goes out of print or you'll regret it later.
Dreamland is an old fashion radio musical with already established jazz singer, Maude Maggart. We've previously used her cover of Cole Porter's "Night and Day". It is important that I mention the Porter tune, because Brent Spiner heard her Porter cover of "Looking at You" and fell in love with her voice.
The other star appearing on this CD is Mark Hamill (Star Wars). He plays the villainous boyfriend and the Spanish waiter, and I believe other character voices too. I'm not familiar with the other voice actor Pat Richardson, but I think she is a pretty famous TV actress.
This album was meant to be listened to from start to finish, like an hour radio program. I was surprise to see that you can download it as per song ($1.50), but to me, this doesn't make much sense because you're only getting 1/16th of the story.
I didn't realize that the story is actually a dream (if you think I'm spoiling the story, I'm not, the explanation is written on the liner notes), so at one point in the story I was pretty confused when Spiner woke up with (what I imagined based on the voice acting) a horrific and older lady. The story is a great idea and it keeps you listening to find out what will happen next.
As for the songs, if you love old big band/swing Frank Sinatra tunes ("In the Wee Small Hours of the Morning", "Nice 'n' Easy"), you'll love these new recording from Spiner and Maggart. The songs that are excellent are the duets, especially on the last track "To Know You is to Love You".
For some reason, when I was listening to this album, the one song that I kept going back to was "Please Don't Talk About Me When I'm Gone". There's a sense of humor in the song ("What do you call a singer who breaks up with his girlfriend?" answer: "Homeless!") and some improvisation and it made me think of a live 1930 setting.
Check out this video "behind the scene" of Dreamland, it really shows off what a great fun time they all had while recording this album (and it translate to the album too).
Dreamland is available on amazon and iTunes, but I would recommend getting it directly from therealbrentspiner.com because you can get it personalized and autographed.
What's in store for Brent in the future? It looks like he's going to be filming a documentary? From reading his blog, it would seem that he's going to be traveling around and will personally make stops to people's homes.
Bonus: Let's not forget other Star Trek actors have recordings. Here are some songs that we've previously used:

Courtney Kaiser and Benjamin Cartel, together are KaiserCartel, a pop girl/boy band from Brooklyn, New York. They have a debut album called March Forth coming out June 10th on Bluhammock Music (although wouldn't it have been punny if they released it March fourth?)
Their biography lists that Kaiser's early involvement with music was as promoter and also, notably, as John "Cougar" Mellencamp's backing singer. She eventually moved to New York as an elementary music teacher, which is, I am assuming, where she met Cartel, who was also teacher in the NY area.
It looks like there will be heavy promotion for the new album, with the band already scheduled to appear on local (Minneapolis) station KARE 11 and on the Macy's Day Music. Then they're coming back in a few days to play Bryant Lake Bowl, which is a very tiny, tiny venue.
Apparently this duo loves Minneapolis ("Minneapolis remains our favorite big-small city, and more than anywhere else, a true home-away-from home."), and they even have a "Minneapolis Version" of one of their song, "Favorite Song", appearing on the b-side of Okay... And Other Things We Feel. The mostly Cartel-vocals song is pretty stripped down, compared to the "real" version appearing on their debut album (which features pianos, tambourine, and, what? alarm clock???).
Digging around, I noticed that they offered a free song from their 300 limited EP called Live From BreakThru Radio called "Season Song". It sounds fantastic when performed live, I don't know how they do the whisteling part so clearly and on demand.
The studio version of that song (appearing as the second track on their album) sounds much fuller. You can hear the variety of instruments used in this song: xylophone, bass drums, maracas, clapping (!), and tambourine.
Listening to the album, they do a good mix of girl vs boy songs (when I say this, I mean the main vocals). Here is a breakdown:
|
SONG 01. Oh No 02. Season Song 03. Traveling Feet 04. Good Ones 05. The Flood 06. Inside Out 07. Okay 08. The Same 09. Favorite Song 10. Dog Stars 11. Blue Sky 12. Free Will Zone 13. Shira | MAIN SINGER Kaiser Kaiser Cartel Kaiser Cartel Cartel/Kaiser Kaiser Kaiser Cartel Kaiser Kaiser Kaiser Cartel |
As you can quickly see, it's a good mix, with the scale tipping in Kaiser's favor. Incidentally, there is a hidden track on the album, which I think is called "Shira", officially there's only 12 tracks.
I just read that the official single and video for their album will be "Oh No". I just got a chance to view it, it shows off the comfortable couple, complete with chairs, water, hands and yarn.
If you like boy/girl sweet melodies folk/pop music, be on the look out for their debut, March Forth on June 10th, followed by a promotional tour throughout the midwest and the obvious California and New York spots.

Okay, so these were all going to be different articles was actually meant to go live on May 6th to today, but you know how it is when things don't go exactly according to plan.
I'm actually feeling a little under the weather (coughing/horrible throat issues and too much mucus build up). I just feel incredibly miserable right now.
Item #1: Christopher's Rollo Armstrong article is featured on vox.com/music - but the real conspiracy is that doesn't feature any The Crimea.
Item #2: One of the PR company that sends us music to review did some promo for us and among the 20 tracks, these are my favorite: Phil Anastasia and David Yazbek, only because they really deviate from the standard "you're listening to We Heart Music" script that they were probably given. Phil Anastasia especially cracked me up and I had to play that back a few times when I first heard it.
I do have a note I wanted to mention about Yazbek, I was shopping at Cheapo Records in Uptown. Yes, I still buy CDs, although I have to admit, often used. Anyway, I was in the very end of the Jazz area when I happened to see that distinctive Evil Monkey Man cover! I had to smile to myself as if there was some kind of inside joke with the punchline of "I saw you on W♥M, dude".
Item #3: By the way, speaking of Jazz, one of my favorite shows that I listen to is NPR's Jazz Profiles, which I get as a podcast.
This is such a great program. It's often very detailed, and in fact, the last episode I listened to on Charles Mingus was so long and rich with interviews and history that it was split up in two parts.
Even if you don't love Jazz, I think you'll enjoy listening to host Nancy Wilson as she takes you on a journey of some of American's famous (and not-so-famous) Jazz musicians.

Item #4: Lykke Li releases Little Bit EP on said Tuesday, and Buster called her album, Youth Novels:
Pretty much flawless. With a perfect balance of catchy sweet pop tunes, and depressing slow jams, it's going to be one of the best albums of 2008... if not the best.
Those are some pretty bold words.
Now, I actually listened to just one of her b-side, "Dance Dance Dance", and I'll have to say that it's actually pretty good. She has a very sweet voice, a little bit creepy, and I'm even going to refrain myself from saying "me lykke".
She's currently on tour with fellow Swedes, Anna Ternheim (read more) and headliner, El Perro Del Mar, who we've previously mentioned, many, many, times, throughout the US.
Item #5: Okay, I'm not even sure why this fascinate me, but apparently hot girl Scarlett Johansson has an album coming out called Anywhere I Lay My Head on May 20th. What probably saves her is that they're all Tom Waits cover songs!
There's not really too much I can add to this, except that I remember the first time I saw Johansson on Dan Clowes's "Ghost World", I thought she was going to go places. By the time "Lost in Translation" came out, she was already a star.
I don't know, maybe I see her differently now, but now I just group Johansson with other popstars and I can't really take her seriously.
That's all I can muster up, I'm heading back to bed now. Goodnight and thank you.

Contest is courtesy of Scion, visit their A/V section on the web at scion.com/sav. Sorry, I don't have any Scion cars to give away :)
Speaking of Scion, it looks like the opening reception to the pop art exhibit is opening up tonight in Los Angeles. It continues onto March 1st, details below:

Hopefully when the weather here gets more... tolerable, I will be going out more often. I want to do more concert coverage, and no, I haven't bought that SLR camera yet. Perhaps when the government sends that tax relief check :)
In the meantime, you're going to have to deal with dodgy photographs and drawings.
In the last press release-related item I wanted to talk about is SXSW. When did this Austin-based music showcase get so popular ?!? I've only started hearing about it a few years ago, but now it's in the mainstream (especially with tech-related reporters!)
Almost every artists that's currently promoting their music is going to be at SXSW somehow. Here are two announcements about SXSW (expect more as SXSW gets closer):

There are a ton of album releases today! Here are the ones that might interest you:
The Mars Volta - The Bedlam In Goliath
From the ashes of At the Drive-In, The Mars Volta releases their fourth album, The Bedlam in Goliath, today.
There's a bunch of "exclusives", so for die-hard fans, you will have a very tough time tracking down all the extra bonus tracks.
I know that Best Buy have an exclusive 2nd live disc and if you got your CD from Japan, it comes with a DVD and a cover song of The Sugarcubes' "Birthday".
Their version is very... er.. very strange. I have to say "good try" though.
Chris Walla - Field Manual
Ceji previously wrote the review for this album, I suggest you read it if you're at all interested in Death Cab for Cutie.
There's not much to add, except that there is a limited edition (with a bonus CD) and as pointed out by Dale, you also get a couple of extra songs for downloads.
Description from Barsuk:
Available in two versions: Standard digipak cd package, or limited-edition deluxe clothbound cd package. Both come with a 32-page booklet featuring Chris' original photography.
SPECIAL LIMITED-TIME OFFER: Order by February 4th and get 3 non-album MP3 bonus tracks!
Shelby Lynne - Just a Little Lovin'
There's a few country albums released today, but since I don't have Willie Nelson's A Moment of Forever, I'm just going to talk about Grammy-Winner Shelby Lynne's Just a Little Lovin'.
Her 10th album is an all Dusty Springfield cover album. I take it back, there is one original song on here, it's called "Pretend". This song is written by Shelby Lynne and is mostly acoustic... in the same vein as her Dusty covers.
I love the album artwork, I think it may have been inspired by the live album Dusty in Memphis.
If you get the Best Buy digipack version as it comes with a bonus DVD with two live songs.
Louis XIV - Slick Dogs and Ponies
The only thing I know about Louis XIV is that all their songs are about drugs and sex. Right?
I'm glad to see that their latest release does not feature old porno images, instead you get darken green pictures of the band (I think).
Anyway, according to wikipedia: There's a Traitor in This Room is the lead single for the album, but I couldn't find evidence of this anywhere. It's not even available on the US iTunes store. By all accounts, it looks like Guilt by Association is the single.
Xiu Xiu - Women As Lovers
You may have remember seeing the disturbing album artwork for
A Promise. Trust me, it's an image you cannot unsee.
Their cover of Tracy Chapman's "Fast Car" is also equally as disturbing.
Anyway, I haven't listen to Women as Lovers, but I noticed that they did another cover on the new album. This time it's Queen's "Under Pressure".
This version is actually pretty good, I wish it would utilize more of that awesome bass that Vanilla Ice took advantage of.
Joe Jackson - Rain
Don't forget that the CD/DVD combo album Rain by Joe Jackson is released today! It looks like I may have to review the album as Ryan is computerless.
Besides from from the awesome DVD (please see my review), the album is reminiscence of his popular Night and Day album. Joe Jackson returns to his piano-driven music, which I'm calling the Joe Jackson Trio (all jazz trios are named after their pianist).
Listening to the album, I was drawn to "Rush Across The Road", a song about seeing a complete stranger and wanting to rush over to her to get to know her. It's very easy-listening reminds me of a more optimistic version of the very bitter Positively 4th Street.
Jackson's ability to tell stories in short pop/jazz songs can also be heard on "Invisible Man" which I think is about a famous person slowly fading into obscurity.
Like most of his songs, it's open for interpretation.

I was really inspired by this Journey cover "Don't Stop Believin'" by Petra Haden from purplepez.vox.com, that it had me digging up some other covers of their most famous songs.
I briefly mentioned that Journey had a new Filipino singer called Arnel Pineda (who they discovered him on youtube) on the Terrordactyls article - ONLY because the Terrordactyls last release was on Don't Stop Believin' Records (who's owner is an obvious Journey fan).
You must think I'm hip to this music called rock and roll, but to be honest, my ears and eyes aren't everywhere. I didn't know Petra Haden's name, but I have always loved that dog., The Rentals[W♥M], and The Decemberists[W♥M] (most of these bands were featured on W♥M).
What cracked me up about this "Don't Stop Believin'" cover is that Haden exposed herself as being a huge fan of pop music. Towards the end of the song, she started singing Wilson Phillips' "Hold On" (oh don't you worry: I've gots the Wilson Phillips post coming up♥♥♥).
Rise Against's "Any Way You Want It" cover appeared on their Revolutions Per Minute (2003) album as a hidden track.
If you've never heard of Rise Against, they are a hardcore punk band based out of Chicago. My brother's a big fan of them, as well as their previous incarnation, 88 Fingers Louie... so they're obviously famous.
True to punk, the song is made shorter, but much harder and faster than the original and... But still, for some reason, I don't know, I have this craving for Burger King (the fast food industry have tainted this song forever!)
Randy Crawford brought a different interpretation to Journey's "Who's Crying Now". I get the impression that she's singing as if she's vengeful or something as she's singing "I wonder who's crying now?"
This song appears on her Through The Eyes Of Love (1992), but beyond that I don't really know much about this jazz/R&B singer.
The most interesting thing I've read about her is that she had a smash hit song called "Street Life" with The Crusaders in 1979 (the song stayed on the jazz charts for 20 weeks).
I have her greatest hits and the majority of the hits are actually cover songs. There's an interesting interpretation of Bob Dylan's "Knockin' on Heaven's Door". It definitely didn't sound like Dylan ever wrote the song after you've heard Crawford jazz and soul version.
Lorrie Morgan brought a country feel to "Faithfully", I believe this song featured her husband, Keith Whitley, on pianos.
Apparently there was a bit of a controversy revolving around Whitley, who was a renowned alcoholic. After a long weekend of drinking with friends, he was discovered dead at the age of 34 from alcohol poisoning. According to wikipedia, the coroner report stated his blood alcohol level was .477.
Ironically, a film project entitled Forever Yours, Faithfully is being developed. It's about Lorrie Morgan and Whitley's battle with alcoholism.
Anyway, back to Morgan, "Faithfully" appears on her best-selling album, Something in Red (1990).
"Open Arms" cover song was a huge success for Mariah Carey, which went to #2 on Billboard's Pop Singles Chart.
Her version is definitely R&B... in some way very drastically different than Journey's origin. I hate to say it, but doesn't she sound like she's struggling or something ?
This single was taken from her album Daydream (1995). The reason why she ended up doing this cover was because she had employed Journey's drummer, Steve Smith and bassist Randy Jackson to play on some of her earlier recordings.
I would have to admit, I LOVE André Matos metal version of "Separate Ways (Worlds Apart)". Check out that shredding!!! It sounds very retro/70s sounding. I love it.
Anyway, the other thing you must know is that Matos is from São Paulo, Brazil, which makes this cover even more incredible.
He was very excited to announced that he's signed to major label Universal in 2007 for Time To Be Free which was released last October. His music is now distributed to Europe, Russia and Japan... so expect to hear more from this guy in the future.
You can find out more about him on www.andrematos.net.
Kelly Hansen contributed "Wheel in the Sky" to the Journey Tribute album. Hansen is probably best known for being the singer and songwriter in this metal band called Hurricane.
By the late 90s, he's joined Unruly Child, which didn't last very long. He went back to the reformed Hurricane, before leaving that to join Foreigner in 2003.
Surprisingly, Hansen's cover isn't drenched in metal... it sounds very power-rock and seems faithful to the original song.
I'm sure I'm missing some other covers and/or less popular songs, but I just wanted to spotlight the more famous songs. These few Journey songs are the essential songs (you all know and love them).
Well, that's all I have, I hope you enjoy this very special Cover Lover post.
Don't stop believin'!

I love this song, and lately it's been playing nonstop on my iPod since Reverend and the Makers's debut album The State of Things, released September 2007 (I actually don't have their album because I refuse to pay $31 for an import).
"Heavyweight Champion of The World" was the first single from them, released last May. You may recall that Mads was all over them when all they had were a handful demos...

Many people believe they are the next big band in the UK. Let's see after a year, shall we..
I believe they have finally made it.
The debut single did so well for them, it made it to the top 10 the UK singles chart as well as top 10 on iTunes UK (note: not available in the US). Since I live here, I can tell you that no one in the US have heard of these guys... but with the right marketing and touring, I predict they are going to be a household name with such acts like Travis, Arctic Monkeys, and Coldplay.
That's pretty much it... oh they are going to set out on tour in February:
- 02/19/2008 GLASGOW ABC1
02/20/2008 MIDDLESBROUGH TOWN HALL
02/21/2008 SKEGNESS EMBASSY THEATRE
02/23/2008 LINCOLN ENGINE SHED
02/24/2008 BRADFORD UNIVERSITY
02/25/2008 WARRINGTON PARR HALL
02/26/2008 LONDON ROUNDHOUSE
They also mentioned that they'll be playing at the NME Award, which I'm 95% sure they're going to win for best new band.
