Also, last night, I conducted an interview with Kerry Politzer (W♥M). It was totally unexpected and spontaneous. It was like You're here, I'm awake, let's do it!!!, and so it was done. Lots of fun, and you can hear a portion of it here (#27). The full show will air October 12th. Now that's how things are done!
She's playing a few upcoming dates:

As you know we get a ton of music submissions (which is both a blessing and a curse), and although I hold actual physical CDs more important than demos or MP3s, in this post I am taking care of some digital submissions. Below are some notes I've put together for these MP3s - most are in the form of one or two songs. I think the most important thing they want to get across is that we mention their new tour dates, etc.
So apologies in advance if I don't go into a lot of details about their biography or music. Just think, this is only four of hundreds of digital submissions.
Also, I know my statement regarding not accepting MP3s is discouraging. If that didn't frighten you off, please consider submitting us some of your music. It wouldn't hurt to try, right?
Oh, and please stop sending me tea. I am not a tea drinker.

lookmexico.net ♥ myspace.com/lookmexico This Florida band seems really impressive, at least according to their latest press release. Their music, from the first two passes through their four-track EP, Gasp Asp, sounds very much like all-american alternative rock. You know, the kind of thing you'll find at the Warp Tour (but not as aggressive). They are about to finish the rest of their tour, ending on Halloween, which actually looks really fun:

hushpuppies.com ♥ myspace.com/hushpuppies They have one of those love/hate/adorable/detestible name don't they? Because they are French and because they are signed to one of my favorite record label, Minty Fresh, I'm mentioning them here. So what makes this rock band so compelling? Maybe it's because they're about to blow up when they appear on the upcoming Guitar Hero World Tour (Oct 28th), alongside other well-established acts such as Modest Mouse and REM. It's all planned accordingly when their album, Silence Is Golden will hit the States on November 4th. More information on news.w♥m |

myspace.com/thepalecorners Two things going for this band: (1) they are from Sweden, and (2) their song is call "Steve Buscemi". Mr Pink, himself. I hate to judge the band on one song, but that's all they sent me, and it's what you would expect: Swedish Indiepop, or as one girl calls it, "sissy music". If you like Sarah Records, you'll want to check out this band - even though it looks like they only have some demos so far. Their biography (by the way, bands when you send me random MP3s, please include a brief biography) lists that they are a four piece band (Christian Lilja, Henrik Nordström, David Tibblin and Victor Palm) from a variety of different "band constellations". They came together as The Pale Corners through their mutual love of pop music and table tennis. What else, my friend, what else? They are playing a few dates, if you happen to live in the area.

www.myspace.com/rolotomassi ♥ partywounds.blogspot.com Rolo Tomassi are a noisy screamo band from Sheffield and two songs were sent to me via "I Spy" have elements of electronica thrown in and the singer stood out as a woman (usually these screamcore band are men-oriented). They were recently on the cover of Plan B Magazine and it confirms that the girl singer is hot... and probably criminally underage. Their debut album is called Hysterics, it was recently released on September 23rd through Hassle Records. I would imagine their live shows to be intense and insane, so be sure to check them out:

The press release for Soul Merchants classifies their sound as "psychedelic goth rock". Seeing as how I'd never heard that sort of description before, I was curious to find out what they sounded like. After my initial listen, the closest bands out today that I could compare them to would be Interpol and She Wants Revenge.
To be fair, I could compare them to the likes of Joy Division in tone. Soul Merchants were only around from 1985-1987, but they made 100+ recordings and one LP. Based out of Denver, Soul Merchants gained a small and devoted fan-base, and they played their last show at the inaugural SXSW This dual disc collection titled 1985-1987 has over 160 minutes of music spread over two disks. These are only just their cassette releases, that have been remixed and remastered by former Merchant Bob Ferbrache.
The CD I was sent only had 15 songs out of the 40, but it was more than enough for me to pick out a favorites. "Beating Heart" was a favorite because of the awesome drum intro, and the guitar riffs in the background remind me of a 60's psychedelic acid trip, while "Love" reminds me of T-Rex on a downer. "Johanna" was a favorite with everyone who listened to it, and that got the most comparisons to Joy Division. I myself just liked the way that just when I thought it was repetitive, there was some sort of musical surprise. In any case, I'd really like to hear their LP Gates of Heaven. There's talk about that being reissued.
You can stream more Soul Merchants via their Myspace MySpace or visit the Smooch Records webby for more info. You can also purchase 1985-1987 via the iTunes Music Store

We're not an "MP3 Blog", but since this is a free MP3 courtesy of Big Scary Music, you can download the free houseofbrothers-deadman.mp3. Maybe if we get some positive feedbacks, I will post more legal MP3 links.
It's actually really hard to review a band based on one song, so the song is okay. I don't know, there's an acoustic guitars and I think there's some violins in there somewhere.
The only thing I really know is that it's the title track from his debut EP of the same name, and it's supposed to be released on the 26th of November 2007. If you like what you heard, you can pre-order the EP from Big Scary Monster and get a free, limited edition badge (that's buttons/pins for us non-Brits).
So, House of Brothers is basically Andrew Jackson from Nottingham, England. He was a former member of The Murder of Rosa Luxemburg (who probably got their name from the Socalist leader). As far as I can tell, House of Brothers is a lot mellowier and traditional than The Murder of Rosa Luxemburg.
By the way, if you were wondering about Big Scary Monster, they're a small label based in the UK. They're probably best known for signing Get Cape. Wear Cape. Fly. (who probably has the best band name ever).

Sweden's Labrador is turning to popular file-sharing Piratebay for help
in distribution of their Summer Sampler compilation.
W♥M have covered quite a few of their bands, including Acid House Kings (er, I couldn't find them in our database. We never covered AHK???? WTF!), Club 8, Loveninjas, The Mary Onettes, Pelle Carlberg, The Radio Dept., Suburban Kids With Biblical Names.
Labrador Summer Sampler 2007
2007-07-19Well, putting the massive 68-track Labrador Summer Sampler 2007 on our server didn't work quite as smoothly as we'd hoped. I don't know if we overestimated our server or underestimated the need of good music this summer. Either way, our server has been pretty dysfunctional ever since but it's all been taken care of now. Very sorry about this!
Download Labrador Summer Sampler 2007 with Rapidshare here:
> Part 1
> Part 2
> Part 3
> Part 4Download it from Piratebay
They are also looking for popbands, which is good news, considering some record companies such as Drag City is not accepting any demos.
PS, there was a power outage that hit San Francisco that affected Vox, Craigslist, among other popular websites last night.

Williams was supposed to compose the soundtrack to The Goblet of Fire, but due to scheduling conflicts, he was not able to. Why? Well, he was working on a couple of small films that you might have heard of called Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith, Memoirs of a Geisha, and War of the Worlds. He provided the soundtracks to the first three films in the series, but for the second, The Chamber of Secrets, fellow composer William Ross helped to finish it and received adaptation credits. The Goblet of Fire was done by Patrick Doyle who also scored Eragon while The Order of the Phoenix was by Nicholas Hooper who scored The Girl in the Café. He's also rumored to be the composer of The Half-Blood Prince.
Now for some Wizard Rock! What is Wizard Rock? Well, basically artists create music all based on the Harry Potter franchise. It could be anything from Harry himself to some reference to potions or magic, as long as it has to do with the series. It's all for the love of music and reading. Now, there are way too many bands to post on here so I chose the ones I enjoyed the most. Besides, many of the Wizard Rock musicians only have one song in their repertoire. The below musicians have created more than one song and have been around for quite some time.
Harry and the Potters
The most popular of the Wizard Rock musicians and the guys that started it all are Harry and the Potters. They're two brothers named Paul and Joe DeGeorge who started the band in 2002. Joe planned a rock show in his backyard, but all the bands cancelled. So he grabbed his brother, wrote some songs, and played them for a couple of people. "This Book Is So Awesome" is only 30 seconds in length, so I also posted another song of theirs', "The Wrath of Hermione", which is unreleased.

Draco and the Malfoys are two brothers, Brian Ross and Bradley Mehlenbacher who write songs from the perspective of Harry Potter's nemesis/adversary, Draco Malfoy. Not much info besides that, well except that they're from Rhode Island and they'll be touring the states and parts of Canada with Harry and the Potters until mid-August. But what else do you need to know?

Ron and the Weasleys, you can guess, are based on Harry's best friend, Ron Weasley. They're two brothers (yes, again) and each represent Ron at a different age. John represents "Ron" at year 3 and Mike represents "Ronald" at year 7. They started the band after booking a show for fellow Wizard Rockers, Harry and the Potters. After that show, other Wizard Rock bands started appearing and they felt the need to represent Ron Weasley.

The Hermione Crookshanks Experience
EDIT: Thanks to Lauren from The Moaning Myrtles for pointing out that there IS a band (well two, but only one has music online) called Hermione and the Grangers. Well, here's a "band" based on her name called The Hermione Crookshanks Experience from California. It's a one-girl band; she plays guitar, bass, drum machine, keyboards, sings vocals and records on a MacBook.
MySpace
The Moaning Myrtles
This girl-due based their name on the ghostly girl in the bathroom that does the weird whiny moaning, which could get annoying, but their music isn't. Just like many other Wizard Rock bands, they too were inspired by Harry and the Potters to create a band based on the series. And since Harry Potter fans seem to have this whole comradership, Alex Carpenter from The Remus Lupins provided some acoustic guitar on The Moaning Myrtles album.
The Remus Lupins
Although the name is plural, it's actually one guy, Alex Carpenter. Here's the description from his site: "The Remus Lupins began when Alex Carpenter looked at his bookshelf and held his guitar in his hand. A sudden lightning bolt of creativity jumped into his fingers and he began to play, and to write songs about Harry Potter. Since then, he hasn't been able to shake the habit and keeps writing them." He's touring this summer with two other guys, though they're more of a backing band.
The Whomping Willows
The Whomping Williows is plural, but once again is only one person, Matt Maggiacomo. He also runs a "record label" called Cheap Rent. A little description... "We form friendships with bands and we do our best to help them release and promote their music. We also encourage our bands to maintain DIY ethics so they never feel the need to sign with a corporate record label." Most of the bands on Cheap Rent are Wizard Rock bands.
The Mudbloods
The Mudbloods are five guys from Texas who took their name from the derogatory term that describes a muggle-born wizard. Draco uses the term as an insult to Hermione since she is one. Much like the other Wizard Rock bands, The Mudbloods tend to play in uniform, sporting the sweater over a buttoned-shirt with tie look. Sorry, they didn't provide much info on their site.
MySpace
If you're curious about this whole Wizard Rock phenomenon and want to delve deeper into the enchanted maze, there are a couple of websites that have much more information and lists bands that currently either have music already or are just starting out.
Wizard Rock - "Your source for the latest in Wizard Rock"
Real Wizard Rock - "Lyrics for your favorite Wizard Rock Bands"
Wizrocklopedia - They "aim to record the past, present, and future of all things related to wizard rock and hope to shed more light on the movement itself."
Wizard Rockumentary - "The Wizard Rockumentary is an independent feature length documentary exploring Harry Potter fandom, the Wizard Rock community, and the goals of these musicians to promote literacy."
So, check those sites out and watch the film when you can. The IMAX version supposedly has some crazy 3-D ending. And the last book in the series, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, comes out July 21.
Idlewild, that five-piece band from Edinburgh, Scotland, released a new album "Make Another World" on 3 April 2007. What's nice about the US release is that you can download the MP3 and wait for the CD to arrive at your home for only $10 (sorry offers only good for US residence). That's a really good price! It's such a good price that it's actually out of stock as I'm viewing it right now... but fear not, you can download their song "No Emotion" on that official website.
I have a copy of the album, but I can't get past that track ("No Emotion"), as it's pretty good. I keep rewinding :)
Currently on tour:
22/04/2007 Paradiso, Amsterdam, Netherlands
23/04/2007 Prime Club, Cologne, Germany
24/04/2007 Lido, Berlin, Germany
25/04/2007 Atomic Cafe, Munich, Germany
26/04/2007 Logo, Hamburg, Germany
16/06/2007 Carling Academy, Bristol, England
17/06/2007 Roadmender, Northampton, England
Also, this fulfill my "I never listen to music post-2000" entry for this month.
Here's a secret on how to listen to an album: You listen to track 1, the middle track (usually 6) and the last track. They are usually the strongest tracks, because if you program it right - you want to start off with a song that grabs the audience's attention. Then when they're about to become disinterested, you pick them up again with the middle track.
So according to my theory, here are the best tracks off his album:
1. Standing on my own again
6. Gimme some love
12. See a better day
What I did get to listen to (random tracks), they're not all bad. If you like Happiness in Magazines, you'd probably enjoy this one.
Luke Haines is originally from the Auteurs (does anyone remember them?), and he's brilliant. I met Luke a while back when I interviewed them for my radio show.
I recommend "The worst of Black Box Recorder" if you're just getting into them, as it is their greatest hits CD (it also comes with some bonus MOV videos).... which I'm sure are all on youtube.
More on the Auteurs later on.
They still don't have a full length album yet. They're working on their forth EP. They're looking to tour this Summer.
This song is their latest single off their new untitled EP.
Check out their website, it's myspace.com/thevillainsofverona
