So i thought i might prepare a little digest of bands that have been performing around the shop in the recent-ish past
Found At Sea - astreetlightsong - Days Like Stars - The Shipwrecked - Hopetoun Hotel - May 8th
Firstly, I would like to say that the sound at the Hopetoun was particularly bad last night. Sadly, it made the keyboard of the The Shipwrecked sound way too loud and drowned out a lot of the other sounds. Maybe another listen is in order. Days Like Stars were cute (but obviously not trying to be cute), the songs were your average guitar rock, but with an obvious mum and dad combo recording the set on their video camera in the audience, who could help but chortle as the guys proceeded to "rock out" to songs that simply didn't suit such "rocking outness". Entertaining all the same.
I had said previously that astreetlightsong would be worth seeing live, so that was my mission for the evening. I wasn't disappointed. Even though the overall sound was still pretty poor, astreetlightsong put on a super show. There's something about seeing a band live that you just don't get from a recording. Whether it be seeing that they can actually play instruments (it's not their Uncle Barry), looking at the large amount of computerisation and guitar peddles required to get their sound or just to see they they are human and how they interact with the crowd. It all adds up. These guys were just that little bit different to the other three bands on the bill. Slightly more electronically weighted, less of a pure guitar sound. Was a nice change. They also seemed to have a swathe of young lady fans, which can't be a bad thing!
Armed with matching ties (sort of), headlining band Found at Sea, rounded out the evening. Formerly called 'Helter' (ring any bells?) these guy have just finished their debut self-titled album, produced by ARIA award winning Paul McKercher (Augie March, Sarah Blasko, You Am I). If you love guitars, if you love the sound they make, if you like that easy listening rock feel, Found at Sea will be right up your alley. It's perfect music to sit down, with beer in hand and tap your foot on the floor. Sadly, the Hopetoun has no chairs.... so we were out of luck.
If you want to trackdown these guys some future tour dates might just be:
13th May 2009 - Phoenix Bar, Canberra
14th May 2009 - Ding Dong Lounge, Melbourne (headlined by astreetlightsong)
15th May 2009 - Public Bar, North Melbourne
3rd June 2009 - Annandale Hotel, Sydney
19th June 2009 - The Supper Club, Sydney

Now for some bands I haven't seen in a while (or are on the list of bands that you probably want to see).
Tucker B's
The Tucker B's have been around for quite a while. Originally from Perth, they are about to release a new record Nightmares in the key of (((((WOW))))); their fifth record. As I haven't heard the album and this paragraph makes it sounds fairly intriguing, it's better to copy and paste than write something irrelevant...
"Commencing with a caterwauling cacophony of doom, the album delves deep into the band's wide-eyed wonder of relationships. Candid and disturbing revelations set against a diverse backdrop, Nightmares at times re-visits the guitar thuggery of previous albums Chubby and Bish Bosh II: The Bosh Bosh. At other times the band strips away just a little of the sludge to reveal beautiful yet strange pop melodies, and weird, unsettling lyrical observations. For this is an album made by MEN about other MEN and WOMEN and CHILDREN."
I haven't seen these guys for many years, but I hope to catch them this time around.... and yes, here's where I'd go:
Peabody
These guys seem to always be playing somewhere... except for a few hours at night and during morning tea break (and sometimes afternoon tea break). Peabody, another band who has been playing in Sydney for as long as I can remember (and that's only as far back as 2001), they're rocky, they're poppy, and they have endearing head wiggles and nerd glasses. Their only fault is the fact that their current drummer is much less entertaining than their previous drummer. They recently played a splendid show supported by The Laurels and Charge Group; also excellent bands. In case you were wondering, Peabody and Melbourne's Actor Slash Model are off on a tour starting this very weekend!
DATES!
Friday 15 May - Evelyn Hotel, Fitzroy, VIC - Supporting Actor Slash Model
Friday 29 May - The Great Northern Hotel, Byron Bay, NSW - Supported by Actor Slash Model (FREE GIG)
Saturday 30 May - The Troubadour, Fortitude Valley, QLD - Supported by Actor Slash Model
Crow
Crow are very old indeed (don't tell them i said that). The more interesting fact is that Crow have a new album coming out this year. You know Crow, don't you? No? Look here:http://www.myspace.com/crowcrowcrowyourboat.
They are quite entertaining live. Completely unpretentious with a wealth of experience, especially in intimate environments (does that sound creepy?). If you don't believe me, Crow are playing a number of shows in the near future. So, for a good time, call......... no........ go to the Bald Faced Stag Hotel in Leichhardt on May 22nd, have a beverage and enjoy the show. Supported by The Holy Soul and Dead China Doll, should be an excellent night!
The Laurels
I caught The Laurels a while back when they supported Peabody, and I was very impressed. This is an easy band to like. They describe themselves as psychedelic/shoegaze, which i guess is quite accurate. If you like Ride or The Jesus and Mary Chain, you'll probably like these guys (and girl).
The word is that The Laurels have "almost" finished recording their long awaited debut release, but that probably should be confirmed before you camp out in a record shop. In the meantime, they have a few shows lined up that would definitely be worth checking out.
6th June, 2009 - The Hopetoun Hotel - with Peabody
13th June 2009 - The Hopetoun Hotel - with the redsunband
26th June 2009 - World Bar - FBI radio fundraiser (get to it!)
18th July 2009 - The Hopetoun Hotel, 7" launch with Ghosts of Television/Warhorse/Whores
Lamplight
I haven't seen Lamplight, so I can't comment on their ability to make you feel like dancing, but they're definitely on my list. Unlike me, you may be in Melbourne.... if so.... you might like the check this out. Lamplight are about to release a new single, A Sun That Will Not Rise, to celebrate this, they will be launching the video clip and single AT THE SAME TIME at the Northcote Social Club on the Sunday the 7th of June (Queen's birthday long weekend, so no excuses!). If you aren't in Melbourne, never fear! Lamplight will be undertaking an extensive national tour in June and July.
For more information go to:
www.lamplight.com.au
Also, if you are specifically into bearded bands you might like to check out a previous review .
Parades
A bit of a wildcard for you, I haven't dug deeply into what Parades have to offer, but from simply investigating their website, things are looking good. Pop/rock, not too harsh on the ear, but admittedly would be better heard very loud (and/or live). Unfortunately, I had planned to have this written a few days ago to let you know that Parades would be launching their single, Hunters, at the Hopetoun Hotel on May 9th.... and yes, it is now May 13th. Sorry!
Eye of the Spider
I love the name, I haven't listened to them and the poster (a lady with a moustache!) for the show is excellent. GO!

There was no set list, I think the song order were all given out by bassist Fiona Kitschin. They started out with "Nail It Down", followed by some song, and then "The Minotaur". Right after Minotaur was an amazing bass-y song "Six Ways To Sunday", from their first album Here Come the Lies (and also their very first EP). Clearly one of the band's favorite song to play live.
I also caught "She Had An Abortion That She Made Me Pay For", from their third album, so basically their set is a mix-mash of new and old songs - making it for an effective playlist.
There were no encores, which didn't surprise me, as it was a work day and there was a moderate turnout for the show.
They have a few more US dates left, so be sure to catch them in Seattle and Portland if you can. Their latest album is called Havilah and it is available for purchase at ATP Recordings.

Halfway into the set, Perricelli picks up his acoustic guitar for two songs (I think "Seal Of Secrecy" and "Love Of All Time"), before going back to electric for the rest of the set. The acoustic was a nice treat, especially with the harmonica (which sort of made me think of Bob Dylan).
You can tell right away that Perricelli is an excellent guitarist with his left hand moving quickly up and down the neck of the guitar. It's no surprise why the City Pages called Little Man the Next Big Thing on their cover story for February 27th, 2007. I did ask Perricelli the story behind this and he told me that they had sent someone over the house to interview and take some photographs. He honestly didn't know it was going to be a cover story, so he was a little shocked when he learned about it.
Anyway, I have their latest album Of Mind And Matter since early February, but haven't had a chance to give it a listen. (If you've ever seen my ridiculous pending review pile, you can understand why it takes me so long to get to things).
Listening to the album post concert, I did recognize many of the songs on the album. This is evident on songs like "Everyone On The Floor", which is my personal favorite. Slower/sensitive songs like "Did You Now" was left off the setlist, probably for pacing.
"Tarots And Arrows" is catchy, although I felt was kind of repetitive with the lyrics at the end, but hearing this live, it made sense. The repetitive lyrics of "she's into tarots and arrows" suddenly comes to a halt, by the way.
The majority of the album feels very 60s, early 70s to me. Some people cited that they sound like T.Rex, and I can see where they are coming with that. In some songs, I thought I hear Beatles influence ("Don't Pray To Fantasy") and even a bit of The Zombies (check out "Talisman" with that "ch-ch-ahh" sound). So if you like "classic rock", you need to check out "the next big thing" Little Man.
Clicking on the 'discography' images on the sidebar will take you to websites to buy the album. You can find out more about his record label at Eclectone Records.
PS, when I talked to Perricelli, he was generally really excited about being interviews by life-sized muppets. So I leave you with part one of the Buzz Show:

Celebrity Chimp
With an intriguing name, Celebrity Chimp are... let's see... bluegrass? rock? indie? punk? all of the above? I'll let you decide. If i was going to say "ooh this band sounds like [insert band name here]" i would have to say "ooh Celebrity Chimp remind me of Mclusky"... in some respects anyway. Celebrity Chimp are quirky, both musically and lyrically. Listen to the track, Murderer, if you get a chance. I love the logic behind it. Brilliant!
Well that's it for me. I must admit after listening to Kingsbury, it's time for some cheesy britpop to re-energise my smile.

THE DRONES
thedrones.com.au ♥ myspace.com The Drones are "an unconventional rock band", currently based out of Melbourne (originally from Perth). I used those quotes because I believe their current album, Havilah, fits more in the realm of psychedelic/space rock band with lots of guitar finger noodling and heavy, heavy Australian accent of Gareth Liddiard. The cover artwork features what looks like a picture of the Moon, but the album title, Havilah, comes from an Australian area, near where this album was recorded. My favorite song off the album is easily "Your Acting's Like The End Of The World", a lofty acoustic guitar song with lots of humorous lyrics, but with a bitterness to it. As usual, however, the song is so different that it doesn't really fit into their moody space music, such as either song "Nail It Down" or "The Minotaur". Although between the two songs, I might be leaning towards "The Minotaur", simply because "Nail it Down" features too much "nail it down" repeating lyrics (even though I think it's a superior song with chorus, bridge, the whole kit and kaboodles). "The Minotaur" doesn't contain any catchy lyrics, but its music rhythm and energy more than makes up for it. Listen to that yep, followed by that bouncy bassline! They are on tour to promote Havilah, currently available in the States via ATP Recordings. They will also be at SXSW 2009 - which I'm happy to report, I will be doing some coverage this year.

PHILIP CLEMO
philipclemo.com ♥ ilovestrings.com ♥ myspace.com Spevack's singing on the album isn't typical pop singing, it sounds like she's reciting poetry. Much of her vocals are also manipulated to sound distant to clearly in your head. My favorite song off Soundzero is "Surfing Dreams and Chaos", which sounds a bit Celtic with the Spevack's metal violins. Unfortunately, there's none of her singing on this song - which is probably best as Clemo is more known for his atmospheric music. Which brings me to The Rooms. The album opens up with an epic 17-minute track, "The Place" that slowly builds up in intensity. You can check out the entire song on his official page. Admittedly, I was drawn to Chloë Goodchild's song, "Taking A Hand (In The Company Of Angels)" and the addition of organs and trumpets helped make the song interesting. If you like electronica compositional soundtracks, you should definitely want to check out these two albums. Between the two, I will have to admit to liking Soundzero just a tad because it features more singing and doesn't feel like transitional songs (for some reason, the atmospheric songs like "Leaving Corridor Red" didn't strike a chord with me). But I reckon you have to be in the mood for these things... You can find Clemo's albums on amazon (for Soundzero, it's listed under "Various Artists"). Both albums have a release date of March 29th, 2009, but The Rooms was made available in the UK in 2008. |

ASTRONAUTS OF ANTIQUITY
astronautsofantiquity.com ♥ myspace.com Astronauts Of Antiquity's Rocket Science For Dummies is an loungey, funk-ish album with layers of electro-type of sounds. The band consists of B. Rhyan (music, guitars) and singer India. India's vocals is from a saucy jazz-styling, which actually fits well in these electronic lounge music - not too dissimilar to such acts as Thievery Corporation or Zero 7. The smooth vocals of India, in contrast to Cee Knowledge's rap, is pretty interest and worth checking out on their track "Soup Du Jour". Other songs worth noting is the trumpets on "Strangest Places", which seems to sound like it's an additional vocals, singing along India's vocals "looking for love in the strangest places". As for my favorite song, check out "Dance Until Dawn". This sounds almost Caribbean, but with a flute solo and easy-to-listen-to vocals. If you're in the mood for an urban loungey pop album, Astronauts Of Antiquity is worth checking out. Details on purchasing their music can be found on their official website. They are playing at Shrine in New York on April 10, 2009, so be sure to see them, if you're in the area. |
ERIK SCOTT
erikscottbass.com ♥ myspace.com Erik Scott, aka Eski, released his all instrumental album Other Planets in early 2009. He seems to have a thing for 'dada' (an art/music/media movement, often with abstract/surreal concepts) as he spent sixteen years with his former band Sonia Dada, but previously did some work for Alice Cooper in early eighties - possibly during his conceptual album DaDa (1983). Other Planets is 100% original compositions by Scott, with one collaboration with Ron Schwartz for the song "Other Planets (Sundogs)". All of the songs sounds epic, like a journey that starts from point a to point b, with lots of emphasis on the bass. There is one exception, "Bathing Maui", which I felt was just a fun song (like a toss-away b-side). I get the impression from the song that Scott is a huge dog lover and Maui, I believe, is the dog's name. To represent Erik Scott, I would have to recommend "Bassque Revolution". Again, heavy on the bass, but it's perky enough to sound like it has its origin in a European cinema soundtrack. You do need to put on headphones to pick up the organ, keys, cymbals and variety of acoustics - but it should also be just as good for background music while you're reading a novel, or hanging out. Other Planets can be downloaded at digstation, physical compact disc at amazon or CD Baby. |

It's all for one, it's all for love
The theme of the day was love (being valentines day and all) and there sure was a lot of love floating around in that room. With guest appearances from Bruno (Peabody), Bow (Front End Loader) and a couple of the guys from Kid Confucius, the set list was just amazing.
I wont name them all, but off the top of my head, soft rock classics from Toto, Billy Joel, Bryan Adams, Elvis Costello, Hoodoo Gurus, Foreigner and a lovely rendition of Holiday Road by Lindsay Buckingham were just some of the gems. Put it together one leather vest, one cake stall, one raffle, one hilarious reaction by the guy that one a signed Australian Idol poster and one heart warming feeling i had knowing that $1 of every beer i bought went to the Bushfire Appeal, made me thankful that i didn't succumb to my body's wishes and go back to bed.
Just three things to remember:
1. Please think about donating to the Red Cross Bushfire Appeal to give a little hand to those that have been caught up int he Victorian Bushfires that have killed so many and made even more homeless.
2. Keep your eye on the Annandale Hotel website for info on any upcoming Annandale Allstars shows.
Turnpike Glow
Andrew Keese and the Associates
Desire is the debut album for the Melbourne-based singer/songwriter, Andrew Keese. Recorded in 2007 with the help of Australian producer, Tony Cohen (of Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, The Go-Betweens, The Beasts of Bourbon and The Cruel Sea recording fame), Desire is a beautifully written and performed album. Thick with sound and well-constructed melodies, this album is perfect for a lazy Sunday afternoon (which is right now!).
Starsailor
You know, I've never really gotten into Starsailor. They never quite made it as big as the bands of their time (well not here anyway) and I'm ashamed to say that I've always had one of their singles (given to me by god know who) in mint condition for years. Whilst I've just been having a nosey at their website it has jogged my memory. Starsailor originated in the sunny north of England and I see that young Mr Walsh comes from Chorley and I have a vague recollection of someone telling me that he went to the same school as some of my friends (which didn't impress me at all, as i really hadn't given Starsailor the time of day). Now Chorley is a special place and holds a special place in my heart, a town between Preston and Bolton where I spent a good few months in 2004 (freezing my bits off whilst the local lasses would be in next to nothing.... still makes me laugh).
Have an excellent afternoon

PART ONE: THE LUCKSMITHS
thelucksmiths.com.au ♥ myspace.com
Representing The Lucksmiths, a band that needs no introduction, is bassist Mark Monnone, from the Summer-er-ness of Melbourne, Australia (while I'm buried in a blizzard in Minneapolis).
You would think that since I am a longtime Luckies fan and having over 200 of their songs (and knowing most of them by heart), it would be easy. It's not. Add on top of that, 0% preparation time... well a disaster, I tell you.
Also, the audio for this interview is terrible, and it's all my fault. When I couldn't hear Mark's vocals, I had set his audio to maximum and forgot to reset it back - so as a result the audio is extra loud. I tried to fix it as best I could by applying some filters, but I think the audio could be better.
So super apology to Mark and the Lucksmiths.
PS, just to let you know what a dork I am when it comes to this band, if you type in "successlessness" dot vox dot com into your address bar, guess where it takes you? I eventually had to change the name to "we heart music" as no one in the world can spell that 's' word.

Hot Little Hands and their debut album Dynamite in Black and White.
I'm not one for being subjective (*ahem*), but his band are brilliant. It's kind of like a mixture of a whole list of sounds stretching back numerous decades.
Synthesized electronic beeps and pings, melodic trumpet lines, cute whilsting interludes, mixed in with that loverly indie-style guitar rockness that people such as myself are powerless to refuse.
Highlights for me include the title song Dynamite in Black and White, which absolutely reminds me of queen. Now I think about it, if I didn't know better I could imagine Freddy Mercury inside the speakers singing. I apologise if that makes anyone cringe in pain. I do have a lively imagination though.
The thing I love the most about this album is that for someone with next to no attention span the eleven songs total less than 40 minutes. Also, it's not too shabby to boogie around the room to when no one's watching. Nice!
Catch em live soon with Plug-In City at:

- Saturday November 15 - Northcote Social Club, Melbourne
- Saturday November 22 - Barwon Club, Geelong
- Friday December 5 - Rocket Bar, Adelaide
- Saturday December 6 - Karova Lounge, Ballarat

Sal
Anyway... arriving back from a tough 6 weeks in Europe and catching up on a few reviews they were backed up and I've noticed this somewhat startling fact.
So here we go. Two Australian bands/artists. Both very folky. Both producing some of the best music to vacuum / go on a car trip to Dubbo with.
Sal Kimber is very much a soloist with a backing band. There's something about her that you can instantly tell that she's obviously:
1. grown up in the country (the Australian country - you can't get away from that unmistakable Aussie twang)
2. been playing music for quite a while
The debut album, Sounds Like Thunder, The songs are both beautiful and catchy. The overall sound is warm and rich in texture. Her band, the Good Ole Boys, defiiinitely compliment her voice perfectly.
Plus, i dont think you can go wrong with a banjo and a piano accordian (unless you leave me alone in a room with them, of course).
Standout track for me is MET Police. Asside for being completely true lyrically, it's probablyu the most catchy and and as i sit here listening to it now I feel a great urge to do a small jig.
You can look and listen to Sal Kimber at some of these places:
http://www.salkimber.com.au
http://www.myspace.com/salkimber
Lamplight on the other hand are a definte 5-piece. When i mentioned Sal Kimber and her Good Ole Men produce a texture rich sound.... that's nothing compared to Lamplight.
Lamplight, is their (self-titled) second LP release...two songs recorded in Old Castlemaine Gaol (Swallowing the Key and Image House)... quite fitting when you listen to the lyrics... but the acousitcs in that place must have been amazing.
Only 8 songs in total... but each feels more epic than the next.
A thick rich sound, a vast array of instruments, the sounds of which intricatly weaved together. Strings, woodwind, piano, vocals, drums, melodies, harmonies, girls, boys.... ooh!
Gotta love the clarinet... of course, i am biased.
Now, I can hear you saying "where can i see these guys?"... well all hope is not lost. Lamplight are venturing Northward to play the Popkomm festival in Berlin in October and then venturing around some of the rest of Europe. So keep your ears to the ground... the internet knows all!
Look at them and Lamplight related stuff here: http://www.lamplight.com.au/ (and spot the spelling mistake)
And look! It seems that Lamplight have just relased their debut album The Fish Will Walk... Brilliant!
One more little thing.... just a small mention. I was recently trudging around a field in wellies at Summer Sundae in Leicester. I was delighted to stumble across a band that I had not heard of (but feel free to abuse me if you have).... Reverend and the Makers. Check it for youself. Just three more words... dirty dirty accents.
That's it!

Sally, I wanted to add that Reverend and the Makers are one of the earliest band that we covered. To bring you up to date: in March 2007, Mads wrote about them, stating
Reverend And The Makers is one of those UK bands that has been getting lots of attention through Internet music forums and extensive gigging
In January 2008, guess what's playing on my iPod non-stop?
I love this song, and lately it's been playing nonstop on my iPod since Reverend and the Makers' debut album The State of Things, released September 2007.
It would seem that they've made their round to you.

Skybombers are a hot new rock band from Melbourne, Australia. If their debut single, Sirens (on sale on iTunes on February 26th), is any indication of how good these guys are, then I can't wait to hear more from these guys!
Straight out of high school, these four guys decided on being in a band full time. They had a collection of demos that they used to land a deal with Alberts Production (the same company that signed AC/DC).
After releasing Sirens EP in Australia, the import single did really well for them on American Alternative radio (including Los Angelese's Indie 103.1).
Between the five songs on the EP, I thought the first two songs ("It Goes Off" and "6 AM") are burst full of energy, and I'm sure a crowd pleaser if they play these live. The mellowest song, "So Come With Me", came in the middle, which is a nice break... before "Revolution" (with a nice military marching beat) and "Russian Roulette" ends the EP, rocking all the way.
Well, in an effort to support their digital single, it looks like they going to do a major tour in support for punk band X (which I actually didn't know they were still together!) throughout March and early April. They are supposed to be amazing live, so catch them on tour if you're able!

The album in question is light and breezy, the songs aren't too long (which is great for someone like me with the attention span of a gnat) and the melodies are sweet and subtle. To tell you the truth, the thought of folk music makes me feel tired on it's own, but Major Chord has taken folk and made it interesting to me. Much in the same style of Belle and Sebastian or Nick Drake, Major Chord takes cute lyrics and accompanies them with soft jangly instruments, but with layers of sound that produces and overall warmth.
Major Chord are Dan Flynn and Kate Connor (and I'm assuming a gaggle of others for their live show - or it'd be a bit sparse sounding): gentle guitar, violin, glockenspiel and soft vocals.
It seems that if you happen to live in Melbourne you are much luckier than the rest of Australia's capital cities on this account. Because if you mosey on down to Northcote Social Club next Sunday arvo, you'll be able to see these guys live.
Basically, I advise that you go. A summer Sunday afternoon, a nice cold beer and some beautiful tunes played live for your entertainment.
You can sample their wares on their myspace page.
Have a splendid day!
