The structure I wanted to keep this: 1. The origin and definition of what Britpop was. 2. It's ultimate demise, our theories on why it went away. 3. Survivors of Britpop, bands that are still around today, including Blur, Radiohead, Oasis, etc. We ended with what song would best sum up what Britpop was. While we had a two-to-one Blur vote, I do think that Kristen's suggestion of "Common People" made a lot of sense.
While I would admit that based on repeated playing of this song, that I've gotten sick of it, it's hard to ignore that the song is a really great song. It's about meeting a rich student, and in typical Jarvis Cocker-reality/vengeful lyrics, tells the student that basically she would never understand what's it is like to be living in poverty like himself, like common people.
The song was king at the time of its release in 1995, and remain to be the band's most popular song. I'm pretty sure the song's been covered a few times, these are two popular ones: William Shatner and Libitina.
The actual show length is about 30 minutes, but I liked all the random topics, that I kept some of them in the first portion. If you like that randomness, stay after the "Common People" and you will be treated to some These Animal Men, Powder, Lush, and Salad. I'm sure none of these bands will be played at Sydney's Britpop Night, as I'm not sure enough people like them.
I'm hoping to have another Britpopcast in a month or so, let me know if you would like to join in on the discussion.

This is the Britpop Top 7 on W♥M. Unlike the previous Top 7 entries, the selections of just Seven was quite hard for me. At the last minute, I had to drop Kula Shaker in favor of the obvious Shed Seven, purely based on their name. Get it ? Shedding Seven ???
Unfortunately, they're not the one spotlight, instead I have to go with Salad, because I get a lot of question about the W♥M banner. It is a vector of Marijne van der Vlugt, the singer of the band.
The last whereabout of Van der Vlugt is that she is the writer and singer of Cowboy Racer. Their website is at cowboyracer.com and they also have a myspace page so you can hear what they sound like.
PS, you would think compiling these Top 7 is easy because it's
basically just a collection of links, but it's not! Picking the best
ones is really hard, I had to weigh all the 29 articles carefully. Special runner-ups includes: The Bluetones (will write about their 2007 album next year), Supergrass (too famous), Space (not quite Britpop), Powder (too unpopular!), and Gene (too, well, too Gene!).

Is it Summer already ??? Well in Minnesota, it's still slightly breezy (and rainy), but I believe it's officially Summer!
In celebration, we're going to listen to "Feels Like Summer" by Sing-Sing! This is such a great pop tune!
Sing-Sing has a semi-famous bassist called Emma Anderson, who started off in her career as a fanzine writer with her buddy, Miki Berenyi, in London. They formed a little shoegazing band called Lush, who were well-loved in the press (even after they changed their sound to more agressive rock after their third album).
After the start of the decline of Britpop, in 1996, their drummer, Chris Acland, committed suicide due to depression. The three remaining band members decided to split up.
We haven't heard from any of the band members for a while, and the first news that I heard was that Emma was in a new band called Sing-Sing. I did manage to pick up "The Joy of Sing-Sing", which I wasn't too impressed with. There were a few songs that stood out, "Tegan" and "Feels Like Summer". The other songs seems kind of bland to me (I suspect it is because I wasn't used to Lisa O'Neill's vocals). I guess deep down in my heart, I had wish they were another Lush.
Anyway, their album didn't sell too well and I read somewhere that they kind of wanted to give up - only to be lured back to the studios because of their overwhelming fan support. With that they released "Sing-Sing and I" in 2005.
Sing-Sing are still releasing music through their official website, so check them out if you like this song. I believe they're offering "Lover" for download on myspace.

This is one of my favorite cover!
The Farrah cover is so-so, but the Lush one really kicks it up a notch.
So, who are the Rubinoos ? Maybe you can tell me, looks like they were formed in 1975 in Berkeley, California. They seem to have been more popular overseas.
Browsing through their website, it looks like they may still somewhat be together (the site news hasn't been updated since 2003, however).
P.S. The Ramones also has a song called "I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend", which is another song altogether.
Edit: Update 7/4/2007, please also see News: Did Avril Steal 'Girlfriend'?
