I got this note that Atlas Sound is heading out on tour next week -- with Broadcast! Since we haven't written about Broadcast in, like, 2007, it's good to hear about them recently.
Unfortunately, they're not coming near Minneapolis (I've visited Northfield before - it's a bit isolated!), otherwise I would love to do some coverage on them.

Chicagoans, please note that tomorrow's Kyle Minogue's sold-out show at the Congress Theatre has been upgraded to the UIC Pavilion (University of Illinois at Chicago: 525 S Racine Ave., Chicago, IL 60607-3303). According to the announcement, this is being done because of "the sheer scale of the production".
All the tickets that fans have purchased for the Congress Theater will be good at the UIC Pavilion. However, because of the upgraded venue, more seats/tickets are available for purchase (it went on sale October 4th, so I'm assuming it's probably already sold out). Good luck anyway, check with ticketbastard if you still have hope to attend.
MEAT IS MURDER

Since Christopher can't get enough of Morrissey and the Smiths, I thought I'd offer this: did you know the Smiths is in Transformers 2: Rise of the Fallen? I know this may sound trivial, but I think it's cool.
Shia LaBeouf's character evolved from loving The Strokes & Green Day, to The Smiths, apparently.

PHONING IT IN
nuclearoreilly.com
The world's first iPhone album, Phoning It In, by Nuclear O'Reilly is available on their website for free. I think it's a good promotion for both Apple and its software, by Intua Software (which costs $19.99). Both platform and music software is powerful enough to produce this electronic album.A music duo disguised as male escorts for librarians
I did quickly listen to the album, it sounds a bit like a video game. If you think there are no vocals, you're wrong, you can hear some mumbling on "Creamatorium", which I'm assuming they used the iPhone's mic to record it. It's kind of a gimmick, but since it's free, why not check it out? Maybe they can be the next Guitar Zeros, or even worst, iBand.
THE PEN IS MIGHTIER

For years now, I've been using my pocket Sony T7 Camera, which I've been quite happy with - for daytime shooting. If you are interested in a credit card-sized camera, T7 is a great camera for you. Image quality is great, but sensor is slow (as with all compact camera), but you can get around this by taking small 640x480 shots. The bigger the size, the worst it looks. Plus for night shots, see example, you tend to lose details. And you can forget about "fast-action" shots, the sensor is not fast enough to capture frame-by-frame.
The $400, I originally paid for the T7 in 2005, have been totally worth every penny. But in the day of technology growing in leaps and bounds, especially in the digital camera market, my T7 is a dinosaur!
I've placed an order for the Olympus PEN E-P1 Camera.
Based on reviews I've read, comparing image quality with other standard
SLR camera in its class, I am impressed with the Pen Camera. It particularly did really well with low-light situations, which is what I
was looking for. It also shoots 1080 HD movie files, which I think will
become more useful in the future. The only complaint people have said
is that is a bit expensive (base camera starts at $800), and I've also
read that it's slow on the SLR class - but slow they indicate as much
as three seconds to startup the camera. Three seconds is not slow! I can live with three seconds!
The tracking number said I'm receiving the camera on Thursday, just in time for Friday's show: Asobi Seksu, Lonely Dear, and Anna Ternheim.
If it all works out, we should have some fantastic pictures from the show. Sadly, I'll still have a perfectly working Sony T7. Should I sell it? Any offers? It's probably most likely going in the bin of other retired electronics, like my all my old iPods, Palm PDA, and MiniDisc players!
PS, Hooray, we're listed as a neighbor on team.vox.com.

Having already sold 60 million records world-wide, with 50+ hit singles, and sold-out world tours... Australian actress-turn-pop diva, Kylie Minogue, or simply known as Kylie, have come a long way from her humble beginnings in the early 90s as an actress.*
Kylie's latest release, at least in the US, is called Boombox: The Remix Album 2000-2008, and as the name implies, this is not a studio album but a remix album. Note that this is her 11th remix album, earlier remix hits, check out Greatest Remix Hits 1 (1997) followed by Greatest Remix Hits 2 through 4.
The new remix album opens up with possibly the best song on the album. Technically not a remix, but more of a mashup between New Order's "Blue Monday" and Kylie's "Can Get You Out of My Head". The mashup version first appeared live at the 2002 BRIT Award from DJ Stuart Crichton, but later appeared on other releases (including an odd choice of movie soundtrack for Layer Cake, starring current Bond, Daniel Craig).
Other interesting remixes includes Fischerspooner's "Come into My World" remix, which remains intact as sounding similar to the original mix, but adding his own flair to it.
I have never heard of Death Metal Disco Scene (myspace), but I was definitely impressed with their "Wow" remix, where they mostly concentrated on the extremely catchy "bow-wow-wow! just the way that you dance! bow-wow-wow!" section.
I simply hated the original mix of "2 Hearts" that appeared on Kylie's 10th studio album, X, but Mark Brown made it more bearable by making the song a little faster.
I haven't heard the original "Your Disco Needs You", but the Casino Mix on Boombox is really good. It made the song to sound more like a Pet Shop Boys sound to it, and I'll definitely will try and pick up her 2000 album Light Years to check it out.
The best remixes are the ones that either transform the song, making it their own distinct and unique version. Case in point is The Chemical Brother's version of "Slow". They manage to pull off their usual beats and rave sound, extending the middle part and only keeping mostly the chorus. If you hear this "Slow" version on the radio, you'd swear that it was a Chemical Brothers song.
If you're new to the world of Kylie, this Boombox album does a decent job of compiling some of the best remix. If you're looking for a studio album, I will have to recommend Fever (2001), which features some of her best-known hits, including some Cathy Dennis-written songs like "Can't Get You out of My Head", "Dancefloor" and "Come into My World".
"Come into my World" was also a smash-hit music video by auteur director Michel Gondry. The video remains one of my favorite Gondry videos (other favorites is the lego White Stripes and Daft Punk's "Around the World").
Boombox is available now at any box store that carries music. Starting in October, Kylie will be over in the US to do a few selected dates for her first US appearance. I'm sure by then tickets will be sold out - so buy your tickets now if you want a guaranteed seat. From watching her concert footage, it's a huge show with lots of costume changes and loads of dancers.
* Although primarily known as a pop singer, let us not forget her appearance in the horrible video game movie, Street Fighter, as Cammy. She made such a wonderful impression, that the Washington Post called her "the worst actress in the English-speaking world". Aw, well she now knows how Madonna feels.

Thanks to Bookishly Fabulous for pointing out that Ben Sollee was recently on NPR's "All Things Considered" (July 5, 2008).
It would be seem that Sollee is looking for a fight with Kanye West, who recently disappointed fans at Bonnaroo for being two hours late (performed at 4:30 am). He made national/internet news by blogging about the venue's inability to setup the lighting and Pearl Jam was already an hour late.
This "open letter" song to Kanye West basically tells off West that "you don't need a light show, just good flow".
You can read more about Ben Sollee on our previous W♥M articles.
Other interesting music news: Facebook's a hotbed of celebrity gossips. Lilly Allen and The Chemical Brothers' Ed Simon are back together. Apparently they both changed their facebook status to "in a relationship" and immediately thousand of fans wrote to congratulate them.
Björk seems to be canceling a few concerts, citing throat ailment. I'm not sure why that's so closely followed by the media, but Ex-Whitesnake guitarist is dead. Does anyone even know his name?
The outrageous headline of "Kylie Minogue Saves Fan from Suicide" makes it sound as if Minogue was there on the rooftop talking that person down. The truth is, the fan was listening to his iPod and her song came on and he suddenly didn't want to stab himself. (Lame, right?)
Also, some idiot stole the headstone to Joy Division's Ian Curtis' grave. I hope his ghost haunts him.
The sad news of the collector's mentality of the CD box sets are on its death bed (hint: maybe it's because it's too expensive). The Yahoo story (written by Ed Christman) paints a picture that "Boxed-set sales have fallen off the cliff; they went from something to nothing".
Even at price slashed to about $29.99 (from the regular $49.98), sales continues to decline. At the end of the article, they mentioned that the limited-edition box for Nine Inch Nails' "Ghosts I-IV," ($300) sold really well.

I thought I would do something different for gathering news, since you may have noticed an absent of the weekly news. News will now be delivered though Links, from a variety of music news sources. I think the "links" links actully have a feed, so you can subscribe to this using your favorite rss newsreader. I personally use google reader myself, with about 500+ items every hour!
BO DIDDLEY
Topping the music news is the death of Bo Diddley from heart failure on June 2nd.
This R&B/Blues artist got his start in 1951 playing at the 708 Club
in Chicago, Illinois. By 1955, Bo recorded some demos, "I'm a Man" and
"Bo Diddley", the later went on to become a #1 R&B hit.
His early songs made him so famous, that he was asked to be on the Ed Sullivan show, but was eventually banned from subsequent appearance when he played "Bo Diddley" instead of a cover song of "Sixteen Tons".
That didn't end his career, instead Bo went onto record more hits.... and the rest is history.
Random vu-thoughts: it would seem to me that Bo Diddley had a passion for pop culture and genre, take for instance his "western" themed album titles: Have Guitar Will Travel (based on the western tv show "Have Gun - Will Travel") and Bo Diddley is a Gunslinger (with the title track having references to the famous shoot-out at the OK Corral). Later on, he would also have his "beach/surf" theme: Surfin' with Bo Diddley and Bo Diddley's Beach Party, all probably inspired by the teen-movie Beach Party.
UNDER SURVEILLANCE
I also wanted to talk about the innovative video by The Get Out Clause.
My my understanding, the band wanted to shoot a music video, but didn't
have the finance - so they thought up the idea to have surveillance
cameras film them in performance. Under the Freedom of Information Act,
they requested the footage of their appearances and pieced together
their video for "Paper".
The video
became viral and have spread all over the UK press and picked up by
NPR, making the band an instance success overnight! (That was in May).
With all the interests, you can pick up their EP, to be released July 7th and "hand made by the band". Judging from the picture of the pre-order, it looks very cool.
Anyway, I think their video is such a cool idea, but I can't help but feel uneasy how "big brother" England's become, no?
For those who aren't brushed up on their dance music, Dannii Minogue is the sister of Kylie Minogue. I am assuming Dannii followed in her sister's footsteps by appearing on Australian television, before taking the plunge of being a pop singer in the early 1990s.
Well her last studio album was in 2003's Neon Nights, but that hasn't stop her record label from releasing the very breast and greatest tits collection: The Hits & Beyond (2006), Club Disco (2007), and her latest Unleashed (2007).
Unleashed was, er, unleashed last November 5th in the UK... I don't think any of her albums actually sold in the US, except Warner Brothers International is going to make this available to the domestic market on January 15, 2008 (this information is according to amazon.com).
There was a little controversy with the album artwork for this release. Apparently someone at the Warner thought it was too risqué and released the album censored. Even the back of the CD is covered up, check out the evidence, or lack thereof.
Also, check out the original photographs by Gyslain Yarhi.
Anyway, according to Amazon's Top 1000 Reviewer Amanda Swales (United Kingdom), she apparently really highly recommended "It Won't Work Out":
18 It Won't Work Out (Ross Callum Single Mix) - UNRELEASED
OMG!! This mix is simply stunning; Dannii recorded the vocals for a possible single release. The single didn't happen, which is a shame. D's vocals are amazing.
"It Won't Work Out" didn't seem to work out for me, it just seems like a Madonna song. I thought "All I Wanna Do" was pretty good, so that's what I'm going to use.
