Opening up for them was Miss Derringer (myspace), who was very excited to play Minneapolis (it was their first time here). The band is all dressed up in what looks like a cross between military confederates and rockabilly hooligans. Miss Derringer herself, Liz McGrath, is in a black dress that looks like she's just been to a funeral.
They started off their set with "Click Click (Bang Bang)", followed by mostly songs from their forth-coming album, Winter Hill (coming out July 14th on Triple X Records). My favorite from their set is the go-go-esque "Black Tears", which sounded much better live. I also thought "Death by Desire" was really cute, the interaction between Morgan Slade and McGrath kind of clues you into their relationship (I am pretty sure they're married).
I liked them a lot. I think they have a great stage presence and I wouldn't mind writing more on them in the future.

I even overheard that some girls were at the show as a result of seeing them at the Rosedale Best Buy signing that they did earlier that day. That kind of promotion actually works, I suppose those girls just happened to be at the store and liked what they heard.
Anyway, what's interesting was that there was really no soundcheck. As soon as there was power on the mic, Nina Diaz, started guitar playing that distinctive rift from "BB" and started singing - which I think may have caught the soundguy off guard and killed the radio. So off they played with mostly new songs from Trio BC.
For "Say" (from Both Before I'm Gone) they dedicated the song to Miss Derringer. Banters like Nina pointing out that Jenn's single or Jenn said the obvious that Nina and Phanie were sisters, comes off as clumsy - but cute, because you know they have been doing this for a long time. I will bet you that they are three very close friends.
They ended their set with "Ven Cera", which sounded brilliant live.
GIAC are only half-way through their tour, be sure to check them out live if they come through your area. My GIAC discography is now complete as a resulting of stopping by the merch table! If you can't catch them live, you can always get their music via Black Heart Records.
PS: I may be off to see Girl in a Coma (along with a bunch of other artists) at 80/30 Music Festival in Des Moines, this weekend... which means, I may be off the grid - so don't expect to hear much from me after Thursday. I will be live-updating via twatter if that is the case. Also, it's very late as I write this and have misspelled Nina's name as Ninja several times.

I actually have loads of music-related news for the last week of April, before venturing into May. All stories are from press.weheartmusic.com, click on the headline to read the full story.
Patti Smith and Kevin Shields Present: The Coral Sea
I'm very excited to mention that Patti Smith (pattismith.net) is teaming up with Kevin Shields (myspace.com/kkevinsshields), from My Bloody Valentine, to release a 2-disc set of their live performance of The Coral Sea on July 11th.
The recording are from sold-out performances and from my understanding, it includes guitars by Shields with Smith on spoken words, reading poetry.
It should be interesting to hear more of this, and I'll keep you updated as soon as I hear more.
The Time Of The Assassins Announce USA 'Awake In Slumberland' Tour
I have been playing Assassin's Creed on the PS3, so I thought it would be nice to mention Melbourne Australia's The Time Of The Assassins (thetimeoftheassassins.com)
who announced their US tour dates a few weeks ago. I don't actually any
of their music (too lazy/I have too much music to work to request
more), but they seem punk to me.
Judging from their tour dates, they are doing extreme west and east coast.

Joan Jett Refueled and Ready For Spring/Summer Tour
It's true, whenever you say Joan Jett (joanjett.com), you have to include "Rock Legend".

Okay, so I've started this video page over at Stage6: W♥M. The quality is so much better than youtube. I've only uploaded a few videos, including T.Rex and Belle & Sebastian.
Anyway, today's video is for Christopher: it's both theme song and it's Jpop.
Since I was already a big fan of Marv Wolfman and George Perez's Teen Titans, so I was really excited for the cartoon series that they were developing in 2003. Because the show was deeply inspired by Japanese animation (or simply japanimation or anime), the show's creators sought after Puffy AmiYumi to do their theme song.
I remember reading an interview with one of the show's creator in a fanzine that he also based the music and song in the style of "Secret Agent Man". It's funny because Johnny Rivers' "Secret Agent Man", which is the theme song to Danger Man (aka Secret Agent) also lifted the music from James Bond 007. (For a Spanish version of Secret Agent Man, see The Plugz - Hombre Secreto.)
Anyway, Puffy's relationship to Sam Register through Teen Titans, lead them to starring in their own television show called "Hi Hi Puffy AmiYumi". The show only lasted 39 episodes.
If you watch the video to the "Teen Titans Theme", you'll notice a surprise guest star: Guitar Wolf! He does what he does best, looking cool and stuff. When he turns his back to you, if you press pause, you can read the back of his jacket:
To Seiji,
You are a true rocker,Love,
Joan Jett
Who knew Guitar Wolf was such a fanboy :).

Rodney Bingenheimer is getting his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on March 9th, 2007 (tomorrow). They're just handing out these things like candy, huh?? To the world, nobody knows Rodney, but if you were in radio (or happened to live in Los Angeles), you'd probably heard of him. He's probably one of the world's most famous radio DJ, at least very influencial on his "Rodney on the ROQ" show on KROQ Radio.
Rodney was the subject of the documentary Mayor of the Sunset Strip (2003), which was directed by George Hickenlooper and produced by Chris Carter (not the X-Files creator).
Because it was produced by the bassist from Dramarama (Chris Carter) there was definitely a section about how Dramarama rose to fame in the US because of Rodney. Apparently, the band (formed in New Jersey in 1982), released their debut LP, Cinéma Vérité, in France under New Rose Records.
Rodney somehow got a hold of this record and started playing "Anything, Anything". He thought they were a French band (wow, their English is SO GOOD!). But it's all cool, because the airplay and demand for the band prompt the album to finally be released in America.
[copy/paste]
Rodney was the first to play records by - and interviews with such artists on his KROQ show as: Blondie, The Ramones, The Sex Pistols, Van Halen, The Go-Go's, Nina Hagen, The Cramps, Nena, The Clash, The Cure, The Smiths, The B-52's, Billy Idol, Adam Ant, Echobelly, Ride, X, Siouxie and the Banshees, Bad Religion, Duran Duran, The Jam, The Bangles, The Runaways, Redd Kross, Bananarama, Joan Jett, Tom Petty, Dramarama, Teenage Fan Club, Suede, The Jesus and Mary Chain, Echo and the Bunnymen, No Doubt, Blur, Elastica, Belly, L7, Sonic Youth, Nirvana, Rialto, Placebo, Oasis, The Verve, Kent, Ash, Gene, Travis, Coldplay, Doves, JJ72, The Strokes, Starsailor, The Hives, The Vines, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, and The Electric Soft Parade.
Trivia: Rodney, in the 60s, was best known as the stand-in for Davy Jones of the Monkees.
