What we have in store for you are three very special Christmas albums that's already released or coming out soon-ish.

putumayo.com
Putumayo's Christmas album came out at the end of October, and features eleven tracks of very well-known Seasonal songs, including "Winter Wonderland" and "Frosty the Snowman". The emphasis seems to be on "family", as these are all very cheery and traditional-sounding. Which should also translate to boring/age-old songs, but this being from the folks at Putumayo, is nothing but predictable.
Starting with appetizers, Johnny Bregar's banjo-like strumming and snapping to "Santa Claus is Coming to Town". We move to some smooth drink with a jazzy "Holly Jolly Christmas" by Martin Sexton.
The main dish for me is a swingy big band "Is Zat You Santa Claus?" by Big Bad Voodoo Daddy. Now, I've heard of these guys when "Swing was the thing" movement, but I had no idea they were so good. Based on this Christmas song, I can see why the band was honored to play the half-time at Super Bowl in 1999.
My other favorite off the album is the Hawaiian Christmas song, "Mele Kalikimaka", as a duet between Debbie Davies & Matt Perrine. The song sounds very retro to me, like something you'd hear in the 1950s by The Andrews Sisters, especially because I have visions of Ukulele and Hulu hoops, as I'm drinking my Kauai Cocktail.
The rest of the album seems very snacky, especially with the acoustic version of "Winter Wonderland" by Deana Carter. This works because of Carter's sweet voice. The other girl-singer Kate Rusby, who brought an international flavor to "Here We Come A-Wassailing", you can tell with her English accent.
The album comes to a close with a dance-for-all jamboree "Frosty the Snowman" by Lars Edegran and his Santa Claus Revelers. This instrumental sounds very New Orleans to me, a bit of jazz and wild swing that grooves you to dance out of the restaurant.
As usual, with all Putumayo's releases, this release comes with a handsome packaging with large lyric book (two pages of biography is devoted to each artist, written in English, French, and Spanish). If you're not convinced, you can hear three more songs at putumayo.com with the option of downloading a free song from there.

Speaking of New Orleans and jazz and Putumayo alumni, Kermit Ruffins has a Christmas album coming out on November 10th called Have Yourself a Crazy Cool Christmas.
As expected, this is an album of Christmas standards, but with a jazzy twist. Lots of trumpets and piano-playing on the album. Ruffins does some scatting "What Will Santa Say When He Finds Everybody Swingin’", which you can clearly hear some Louis Armstrong-influences.
While I say these are standards, these songs often have change in either musical shifts or lyrics have been changed or sung in a very different way. I noticed that "swing" replaces a few words, like in "Santa Claus is swinging into town". Also, as with most jazz improvisation, the music often become its own entity, usually stretching out the songs into five or six minutes, when traditionally they're two or three minute songs. For instance, "Little Drummer Boy" is now a sad New Orleans-style six minute epic song.
My favorite on the album is the duet "Baby It's Cold Outside". My review copy does not include liner notes, so I do not know who the part of the woman is sung by. Anyway, it's not as cheesy as the Tom Jones and Cerys Matthews version, but it's still pretty funny whenever I hear this song about a couple fighting and the guy is locked outside his home. Ruffins' humor can be found on his title track, "Have Yourself a Crazy Cool Christmas" where he warns people to have a crazy cool Christmas, but "don't get knocked up!"
If you want to hear Christmas songs in a jazzy style, you do need to check out Kermit Ruffins' Have Yourself a Crazy Cool Christmas. The album will be available next week on Basin Street Records.

On a similar note, Tori Amos' Christmas album is a reworking of classic Seasonal songs. While it's easy to dismiss these Christamosed song, I think she's doing a fantastic job on changing your expectations of these songs. If you have ever heard any Tori Amos cover songs, you'll notice that she always transforms the original song into something completely new and different. And that's exactly what she's doing on Midwinter Graces.
While some of the more popular and traditional songs, "What Child Is This?" (retitled as "What Child, Nowell"), "Emmanuel", and "We Three Kings" (retitled as "Star of Wonder"), are reimagined, I think there might actually be some original Tori songs such as "Pink and Glitter" and "Our New Year".
What else is new is that she has a full orchestra behind her on this album. You can clearly hear all the sweeping arrangements on all the songs, in particular "Harps of Gold". In contrast, my favorite is "Snow Angel", a quieter song with lots of violins and pianos.
If you're a Tori fan, there's something to like here: a bit of traditional with a bit of modern... but clearly a Tori Amos product. I've stressed before that Abnormally Attracted to Sins will only appeal to Tori Amos fans, with Midwinter Graces, I feel people outside of the Amos circle will like and understand. I mean, who doesn't like Christmas music?
Midwinter Graces is available next week on Universal Republic. You can pre-order the CD/DVD combo on amazon. Unfortunately, my review copy does not include the DVD portion, but I'm sure it's the usual interview and/or music video.

Mammút, described themselves as "pitch black pop eating colorful Skittles". While I would disagree with "black" (this tells me the band is "dark" and "broody"), I feel this is a really great young energetic rock band with some gothic-esque vocals. They sort of remind me of an Icelandic version of Swedish all-girl band Sahara Hotnights. Anyway, they seem promising enough, after only three months of forming the band, the three girls, two boys band entered and won the annual "battle of the bands" Músiktilraunir. They were quickly spotted by various publications like Rolling Stone and UK's Music Week.
All of the songs their 2008 album, Karkari, are sung in Icelandic, including the English title "Gun". I suspect the "pitch black" statement might refer to dark, depressing lyrics, but based on just their aggressive music, I didn't feel like that was what they were going for.
Although they lost their original bass player, and I don't know how their debut album sounded, but it's clear that the new bassist did a wonderful job - especially on the best track on the album, "Geimþrá".
I suppose I did enjoy the more "rock" out tracks, like "Ég veit hann kemur fljótt" and (ironically first track) "Endir" (End), but even the mellower "Í leyni" builds up in intensity. But what I think ties everything together are the great angst vocals.
Karkari recently won "best Icelandic album" at the Kraumur awards, and quite deservingly so. You can hear for yourself by purchasing the album directly at mammutmusic.com. Still not convinced? Try out the free download of "Svefnsykt" from the vowel-hating RCRD LBL.

THE GASLAMP KILLER
thegaslampkiller.com ♥ myspace The Motherfuckin' Gaslamp Killer is too non-print friendly and DJ Willow sounds too Buffy, so the mysterious DJ goes by simply as Gaslamp Killer. His latest EP, My Troubled Mind was released on August 4th on Brain Feeder Record/Alpha Pup Records. As the title suggest, the songs on this EP gives us a glimpse of Gaslamp Killer's head: a strange music mixture of surf, funk, psych. The strong track is "Turk Mex", a Middle-eastern-gypsy type of music with a strange turntable blend of lounge music. The one track that actually doesn't seem to belong on the EP is, "Birthday Music". Possibly because there are lyrics on this song. I especially liked the part where he mixed in this 70s soul song "Give a Damn" near the end of the song. |

ALVIN BAND alvinband.com ♥ myspace Rick Alvin Shaier, from Miniature Tigers is essentially the one-man Alvin Band. What's interesting is that he will make his album, Mantis Preying, to be "officially" available on peer to peer networks on September 22nd (however, according to amazon, it looks like there will be a physical CD release - two-disc edition in fact). I'll be completely honest with you: I didn't like this album that much. I like the clever word play title, I like the idea of a one-man doing a cappella (there are no music instruments on the album) - but I just didn't enjoy the songs. It's kind of too non-traditional/experimental for my taste - the same reason why I dislike all the hot pitchforky bands like Animal Collective, etc. But hey, one man's garbage is another man's Earl Grey. I did give the album several listens (as evident on lastfm), just to give the album a second chance. The one track that I thought was good was "Lord of the Fly", which fooled me into think there were instruments. |

SUNNA GUNNLAUGS
sunnagunnlaugs.com ♥ myspace Sunna Gunnlaugs is an Icelandic Jazz pianist. Don't let the eight tracks on the Mindful album fool you: this is a full sixty minutes album. As in most case with jazz, some songs tend to go on and on and often without lyrics the songs seems to blend into one another. I did find the album to be soothing, relaxing. It's really perfect for watching the sun set, sitting with a book and petting your cat. I did enjoy "The People of My Heart", because each of the music players gets a semi-solo spotlight. From the lead piano by Gunnlaugs, to the Drew Gress bass, the Tony Malaby's sax, and the subtle Scott McLemore drums. I feel all the instruments are having a polite conversation around a dinner table. I was also drawn to its title track, "Mindful", a track that feels like a journey (the ending is quite different from the start of the song). You can download this track, as well as others, on her iLike page. Having just finished some US summer dates, Gunnlaugs will be doing local dates in Iceland:

NAREE
nareemusic.com ♥ myspace I wonder why half-Thai, half-British Naree (and grew up in the Middle East!) doesn't mention anything about her first two albums, I'm No Fool (2004) and Proud (2005) on her website? Is she not, er, "proud" of them? Well her third album, tentatively titled Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde will be release somewhen this year? As you can see, I'm not really given much to work with here. I do have a six-track promo EP of Dr. Jekyll And Mr. Hyde for review. Each song is basically Disney pop music, the difference is that it seems to all been written by Naree. While you may think the title track, "Dr Jekyll" should be the clear winning song, I felt "Glamour Kills!" was far superior (despite the use of autotune). The song is so good, I can easily see why Naree was asked to open up for Pink in 2007. The band has a show coming up in New York:

Starting with "This Is Me", the song instantly sets the tone of the album: a strange funk mix, girl-pop vocals followed by contemporary singing. It's as if the message is "accept me as I am" when you accept the song as genre-mixing.
Like the start of a work week, "Monday Mornin", starts off with a "yawn". Although the song is about breakfast and starting the day, the double bass feels like it's an evening song.
So after morning, she finally gets up and sings "Hello World". She looks forward to seeing the world, despite it being a "big bad place".
I could go on, but it seems like the album takes you on a journey, ending my favorite song, "Love Another". When you can get past the artificial record noises, you'll find there's plenty to love about "Love Another", especially the soulful vocals - backed with a mainstream dance beat.
She isn't shy citing classic ladies, Ella Fitzgerald & Billy Holiday, as well as more contemporary soul artists, Adele and Norah Jones. So if you like those artists, but with a modern mix, you'll love Serrata. You can get her album at Amazon.com or on emusic.

In a musical climate, that has made international stars of artists, and I use the term artists lightly like Hannah Montana and Miley Cyrus. Its refreshing to come across someone as refreshing as Leela James. Hannah and Miley take note, if you want to know how to SING and stir people’s souls, listen to “Let’s Do It Again”.
For those of you reading this review and are unfamiliar with Leela James, this Los Angeles, California native and resident Houstonian has a voice that makes your heart take notice and makes chills run down your spine.
She may be an unknown to most of the music masses, but she has been involved in the music industry for some time. If you are a fan of hip hop, and the brilliant work of Pete Rock of Pete Rock & CL Smooth fame, you would have heard Leela’s voice as a feature vocalist on his 2004 release “Soul Survivors Part II” and she has toured as an opening act for The Black Eyed Peas and Macy Gray.
Leela, was signed by Ruff Nations Records shortly, that imprint had a distribution deal with Warner Brothers Records, but that label shortly folded and Leela was cast into the music industry’s black hole of artists that see their careers come to a sudden halt. Thankfully, Warner Brother’s was smart enough to realize they had a talent and in 2005 her debut album “A Change Is Gonna Come” was released. This project was executive produced by Commissioner Gordon, and featured production by Kanye West, Raphael Saadiq, Wyclef Jean, James Poyser and Chucky Thompson.
The success and positive press of this debut album, had kept Leela and her band on the road for three consecutive years, and contributed to her second release taking so long to be completed.
It’s rare for an artist to do something to creative and daring, but Leela’s decision to record this album completely live with her backing band was brilliant. This album of cover songs by artists as far ranging, as Angela Bofill, James Brown, The Rolling Stones, Phillis Hyman and Foreigner takes on a life of its own. Upon first listen, my first impulse was to turn up the volume. I am a huge fan of Foreigner, Lou Graham’s voice was an original and it took Foreigner to great heights in the 70s and 80s, but Leela James’ version of “I Want To Know What Love Is” is taken completely to church and the live arrangement manages to take this song to places that would make Mick Jones and Lou Graham quite proud.
“You will hear a variety of range as a vocalist,” Leela James said about what the listeners will find on the CD. “I love all kinds of music, if the song is good, it's good!”
There are many highlights on this album, but a special note should be made of Leela’s backing band. This group of musicians are air tight and in the pocket and they bring a flavor to the arrangements that truly bring out the best in Leela.
Some of the tracks on the album include The Rolling Stones’ “Miss You,” Angela Bofill's “I Try” and Bootsy Collins’ “I’d Rather Be With You.”, Al Green’s “Simply Beautiful and James Browns’ “It’s A Man’s Man’s Man’s World”.
Just when I start to lose my faith in REAL SOUL MUSIC, I stumble across a project as emotionally stimulating as “Lets Do It Again” and I am reminded as to what music can do to stir the soul.
I encourage all music fans to listen to the wonderful CD and support this artist, because she is a hidden diamond, in a sea of crystallized glass.

Big Blue Moon plays like the soundtrack to a gentle romantic drama, one with minimal daylight scenes and lots of long, winding walks past ivy-covered Brownstones and quaint Mom & Pop cafés. It’s New York City, shot through the lenses of a poet, where the daily grime is tucked away in shadows and loneliness is as beautiful as a street-lit silhouette. I was reminded of the film My Blueberry Nights, which begins in New York but follows the main character as she moves across the country and eventually returns to the small Manhattan diner that initially drew her in. Jazz accompanies her journey, a fitting musical choice as the wayfaring heroine is played by Norah Jones. Similarly, Tolar channels Jones’s calm, light-but-not-lite sensibility, which explains why this style of music complements the visual narrative of film—its simple elegance is understated without seeming obtuse.
Tolar is a self-described “Southwestern girl living in Brooklyn,” a transplant from Colorado by way of California, raised on folk legends like Carole King and the downcast country blues of Johnny Cash. It’s fitting then that Moon addresses issues of displacement (a theme that Tolar cites in her bio); there’s an overwhelming connection with “home,” both geographically (“Colorado calls me home underneath a big blue moon,” from the title track) and as a symbol of romantic contentment (“Somethin’ in your words brings me home when I am lost,” “Somethin’”). Despite an obvious attention to heartbreak, Moon avoids gloomy cynicism, perhaps owing to the conceptual quality of the album as a whole: a kind of reflective “travel” diary, with each song documenting Tolar’s search for answers to The Big Questions in Life, like “why does love have to be so complicated?”
When Moon picks up in pace (on songs like “Along for the Ride”), Tolar proves that contemporary jazz can be sexy, in an unfussy, silk-and-red-wine sort of way, without sacrificing consistency. Often the inclusion of one or two up-tempo tracks has the adverse effect of disrupting the balance of these mostly-mellow records. But Moon opts for steady sophistication rather than stylized showiness, which speaks well of Tolar’s self-awareness as an artist and makes for a moving debut album.
Big Blue Moon can be purchased through Sarah Tolar’s official website at www.sarahtolar.com (via CD Baby; direct link: http://cdbaby.com/cd/sarahtolar). Tolar will be playing a CD release show at The Canal Room in New York City on April 13. For more information please visit her website or Myspace.

Sylvia
was born in Italy, but
emigrated to Philadelphia
when she was a child. After moving to Miami,
she started singing professionally in 1976.
Phyllis Diller, Jackie Mason and other headliners began to use her to
open their acts when in Florida.
She was content being a pop performer until she met Lionel Hampton, who told
her she should be singing jazz. Recording with Hampton in 1985, Bennett worked
with him at festivals and at the inaugurals of Presidents Ronald Reagan and
George Bush. Three jazz records resulted from Hampton's injunction to go jazz -- I Need a Man in 1988 for New York Music,
Rainbows in the Sky in 1991 for her own
company, Out of Sight Music, and Here's
That Rainy Day for Bay Cities in 1992. Tenor man Boots Randolph joined her
on the latter session. During the 1990's, Bennett has appeared at European jazz
festivals, notably in Budapest and in Amsterdam.
Although the songs on Songs From The Heart are standard jazz love ballads or “torch songs”, Sylvia's silky smooth, clear and bright toned soprano voice and warm personality, are particularly suited to these old favorites. Not only does she touch your soul, she soothes and caresses it! You instantly feel relaxed and at ease listening to her, and by the time Sylvia has finished you feel reassured that things really will be all right.
Add to this “The Three Tenors,” tenor saxophonists, that is. The late Boots Randolph, two-time Latin Grammy nominee Ed Calle and eight-time Grammy nominee Kurt Whalum accompanying the singer with saxophone solos on each tune, and providing the perfect blend of sax and vocal. Just another reason Songs From The Heart is a “must have” for every jazz collection.
Songs From The Heart is available either as a CD or as a MP3 download from CD Baby

So below are a few albums that were released on November 4th that was largely ignored. I finally had the time to put them all in for a spin:
ROGUE MOTEL
roguemotel.com ♥ myspace.com
Rogue Motel are an indie rock band from Portland, Oregon. I've been noticing lately that there seems to be a ton of bands coming from the upper west coast (mostly between the Seattle and Portland), and they all seem to be pretty good.
Anyway, to start off, this is one of my overdue review, but to be fair, there was a lot of confusion about the actual release date. I try and schedule reviews to go up just prior or around the release date, so it's kind of important to me anyway to make it timely. Unfortunately, they moved the release date to election day... see note above.
I think the band might have been named after living in a cheap motel while recording their album, far away from their home, in Kentucky. The result is this moody but intense album called Daylight Breaking.
The title, I think came from their best song (in my opinion) called "Hurry Up": "Early morning but the sun's not up yet, I came to look for something to ease my head". This is a pretty upbeat song with a simple, but memorable and catchy, chord.
I also really dig, "Smoke and Vines", particularly the line:
Maybe I'm reading too much into it, but the lyrics has a rebellious feel to it and that the band will continue doing what they're doing.you want to change me, get in line
You can currently get the album digitally via amazon or the itunes (I've been having a lot of crashes relating to itunes, so I hate them).
FUTURE CLOUDS & RADAR
futurecloudsandradar.com ♥ myspace.com
I wanted to mention these guys for my Christmas 2008 for their song "Christmas Day 1923", but obviously a lot of songs were left out this year. Well, I reckon there's always next year.
To talk about them, you'll have to go back to the late 90s when they were known as a the power pop band called Cotton Mather. They had a string of albums before rising to fame when Noel Gallagher asked the band to tour with Oasis.
Perhaps he was tired of the power pop thing, but singer Robert Harrison went on to form Future Clouds & Radar, a more art rock/orchestral/psychedelia, much in the vein of, say the Beatles' Sgt Pepper.
Listening to their second album, Peoria, released on Election Day, it feels very sixties. Check out their perfectly 60s pop song, "Old Edmund Ruffin". Doesn't it sound like something John Lennon might sing on ?
I generally enjoy all the songs with trumpets ("Eighteen Months", "Mortal 926"), but not so much the crazy synthy chaos sounds (the middle of "The Mortal"). Thankfully it's just one song that I didn't really get along with.
If you've ever liked later-The Flaming Lips or psychedelic Beatles, you really need to give Future Clouds a try. Get your own cloud 9 at the usual locations (amazon, emusic, etc).
BSTC
myspace.com/bstcollective
Finally we have Music for a Saturday Evening by BSTC, also released on Election Day. We don't normally get soul albums in house, but when we do, they certain stand out among all the indie-rock stuff we get.
Like the 60s-inspired music of Future Clouds and Radar, the BSTC (short for BlackStone Theatre Collective) is drowned in 70s disco, soul and jazz. They seem to be very proud to represent their deep roots in these genre of music.
The band/collective is mostly producer Andy C. and multi-instrumentalist, Tunji, with singer Keanna Johnson. I think Johnson only sings on a few songs, but she seems to be the face of the band.
I personally thought the two stand-out tracks for me are "B.S.T.C." and "Jazz in Outerspace". Both instrumental songs offers some outstanding beats and groove. Since I wanted to represent Johnson's vocals in the song, I thought the excellent hip-pop song "Get It" should be used.
Fans of soul music, Buena Vista Social Club, or Jason Miles, should really take note of BSTC.
Can't get enough of their music? Check out that widget thing, it will play a few other songs from them.
You can get Music for a Saturday Evening from various places, usually amazon or emusic.

bearspop.com ♥ myspace.com/bearspop Simple Machinery was released in early September of this year, and I did have several writers take a listen at the album for review. Due to conflicting scheduling and sheer laziness (haha), the album ended up back in my court. The one thing that each of the writers told me was that this band is "really fun". I would also add that this band is actually pleasant-sounding, I mean these songs sounds like it's from a mellow 60s. My favorite song on here is "Wait and See", surprisingly very retro-sounding and I wish it would've continued on - only it sort of just ends in the middle of the song or something (at least that's how it feels). A close second is the first track, "Please Don't", which grabbed me and made me pay attention. Both really great songs. If you like indiepop, you should definitely give this band a chance - I think you'll find yourself humming along. Simple Machinery's been out since September 2, 2008. You can buy the album directly from them or the low-costing Tone Vendor. They promise a vinyl version of Simple Machinery will be "available soon". Check them out live:

belakaroli.com ♥ myspace.com/belakaroli I love this! There's no guitars anywhere, most of this music is a mix of electronic sounds and jazzniks (Jazz/Beatniks) with its upright bass, accordion, violins, and organ. The reason why Bela Karoli is on here is that their 2008's Furnished Room features an odd bee's behind on its cover. The band seems to be driven by singer/upright bass player, Julie Davis. She sounds like a passive singer, letting the music play around her vocals - yet her voice does drive the songs. My favorite song on this album is "Some Things That Fly There Be", which I think the cover art was inspired by this song or vice versa. Check out that French-sounding accordion, that cool, cool, cool, vocals saying "some things that fly there be, birds, hours, the bumblebee: of these no elegy". Yeah, I know, it sounds more like poetry than it sounds like a song! Furnished Room is out now on Helmet R00m Records and it looks like they are playing Halloween! That should be an amazing sight to see:

miniaturetigers.com ♥ myspace.com/miniaturetigers From Phoenix, Arizona, is this delightful indie rock band called Miniature Tigers. Fans of Weezer, will love this band. Charlie Brand, the singer, has a very comfortable, laid back, and non-threatening vocals - that helps when he's singing these geeky love lyrics such as: and The band is gaining momentum, already on Rolling Stone's "25 best bands on Myspace" and with this Tell It To the Volcano (released September 16th on Modern Art Records), they are planning on playing the famed-CMJ in New York.

amy-ray.com ♥ myspace.com/amyray Amy Ray is best known for being one half of the legendary Indigo Girls. She just released her latest album, Didn't It Feel Kinder last August. I really love this album, there's a nice mix of easy-southern comfort feel, but there are the occasional rock-type songs such as "Bus Bus" to make you take notice. And it feels honest. Songs like "Cold Shoulder" tells us it is, detailing about a straight girl that is secretly into other girls. My favorite song on the album is the love song, "She's Got to Be". I found out that this was Amy Ray's experimenting with using her head voice: For ‘She's Got To Be,’ I was experimenting with using my head voice, my falsetto, and so I wrote in a different direction, too. There's also an underlying statement in her songs, that's not blatant. Take for instance, "Who Sold the Gun", which is an anti-gun song from the sounds of it. The last line is pretty powerful: "because we're just as f*cked up, yeah". I don't want to read too much in "SLC Radio", but I feel that this is a woman-rights/polygamy associated with Mormons and Salt Lake City. These songs reminds me of classic protest songs. Didn't It Feel Kinder is out now on her own non-profit label, Daemon Records. Vinyl fans should want to check out the 180gm limited edition with new artwork. You can catch her on her upcoming fall tour:

mercuryrev.com ♥ myspace.com/mercuryrevmusic Mercury Rev released two albums simultaneously in 2008, one for sale (Snowflake Midnight) and one for free (Strange Attractor). If you were interested in the free album, details are on their official website. I don't have Snowflake Midnight to compare to, but from what I've heard on Strange Attractor, Attractor seems to be more electronic/ambient - basically background-type of music. The most interesting song on here ("Nocturne For Norwood") uses samples from some guy talking. For some reason, I thought Mercury Rev had singers? This feels like it's an album of background music that they lay down for audio to go on top of it, so it doesn't feel at all complete. I guess I can't complain because it is, after all, free. Regardless, they are getting some major buzz and press, selling out all their dates in Ireland.

superxxman.com ♥ myspace.com/superxxman Super XX Man's Volume XII: There'll Be Diamonds comes out October 21st, which is in a couple of weeks. Because of their McGruff-ish cover art (but on closer inspection, you'll find that it's supposed to be a Panther - named after his song "Cautious Like a Panther"), I have decided to include them in this round up. As the title suggest, this is his twelfth album. Once again, the fine people at Tender Loving Empire shows off their silk-screening awesomeness. I really dig these cover art, which kind of feels rubbery on touch. Super XX Man is actually one Scott Garred, who started his career in the 90s in the Austin-based indiepop band Silver Scooter. There's elements of indiepop, but he's also experimenting here with a variety of instruments and sound (including the ukulele!). Although it's mostly a serious storytelling album, I did find that there are hints of humor ("little duckie you're the one" line in "What Lies Beneath"). Check out my favorite song here, "There'll Be Diamonds", the title track, demonstrating said variety of instruments (can you hear a xylophone?) Good news is that they'll be setting on an upcoming tour, including that crazy CMJ everyone is talking about:

Overall, another wonderful little show. Forgive me that it's really long (nearly an hour), and I keep promising to keep the show brief (which apparently is not happening). Although I do end up throwing out 20% of what's recorded, most of our conversations are solid gold!
