Werewolf vs Freddy ♥ Sheraton Hotel, Minneapolis (11/07/09)
This year, the merchandise room was reduced to a size of a
large bedroom, so you walk in and out in about a minute. I did manage
to pick up some stuff, but they weren't cheap. Celebrities prints are
costs anywhere from $20-40, we weren't allowed to take pictures (if you
did purchase a print, then taking pictures would cost an extra $5).
Last year, most of the nicer stars let us take pictures for free.
As for merch, the usual bootlegs, toys, horror t-shirts were
there, but because of the smaller room - it feels like there weren't a
lot of choices. Some commonly seen t-shirts were Nightbreed and
Hellraiser, which I thought were cool, since I have always thought
Clive Barker is genius.
Also, this year they had music as part of the show. The person that was supposed to give me a pass to the music area was not at the ticketbooth and I didn't feel like paying extra to see music. Besides, all of the bands seems to be either punk or metal, not really my cup of tea, so I didn't bother to make much effort in getting the pass.
With the disappointing cancellation, incorrect/false information (is
updating a website too much to ask?), the smaller space, and
expensive admission ($30 at the door) - this will be the last year that
my group will attend.

The song is a cover of the classic Cramps (myspace) 1980 song from their album, Songs The Lord Taught Us. As with the original and the cover, they both feature that distinctive guitar riff and, er, campy and moody vocals. I'm not sure what the deal is with the Chico Fellini cover, but there's about 45 seconds of "extra" jewelery box music at the end. I only ask because I had to boost up my volume to catch it.I was a teenage werewolf, braces on my fangs!
If you love the Cramps, it might be worth your while to try and track download the bootleg called Songs The Lord Might Have Taught Us, which features an alternate mix of "I Was a Teenage Werewolf". I believe it might actually be the "Original Mix" found as bonus CD tracks on reissues, minus the Lux Interior's blowup at the false start.
Anyway, what the song is ultimately about is "growing pains" of a teenage werewolf, and I'm assuming describes the 50s film (having never seen it myself). The 50s horror film of the same name, starring a young Michael Landon, of Little House on the Prairie fame was so successful that it inspired other films such as "I Was a Teenage Frankenstein", "I was a Teenage Mummy", "I Was a Teenage Serial Killer", and "I Was a Teenage Intellectual", etc.

As a bonus, here's also the most famous Wizard Rock band, Harry and the Potters (official / myspace) with their song "My Teacher is a Werewolf". In fact, here's even more Werewolfy songs from previous year's entries.

First of all, Epitaph sent in this press release for Tim Fite:
Of course, I clicked on the "Trick" part to get "Raisins".Brooklyn-based multi-genrist Tim Fite will release a new free, Halloween-centric recording via his website on October 31st, 2008. Available for one day only, the innovative song cycle entitled ding dong Ditch comes at the culmination of his tour with Man Man and will be celebrated with a special Halloween show at the Starlight Ballroom in Philadelphia.
The two EPs, Ding Dong DITCH (2008) and It's Only Ketchup (2007) proved too experimental for me. If you like that sort of thing, you should check it out.
Bruce Springsteen is also in the giving mood, with this free bluesy recording of "Night with the Jersey Devil".
He previously invited people to trick-or-treat at his home in Rumson, but then canceled it due to safety concerns.
You can download the free song today and tomorrow only at brucespringsteen.netDear Friends and Fans,
If you grew up in central or south Jersey, you grew up with the "Jersey Devil." Here's a little musical Halloween treat. Have fun!
Bruce Springsteen
Finally, courtesy of Bar None Records are three songs from their catalogue of artist: Greg Camp's "Zombies on Parade", Hot Lava's "Mummy Beach", and Starling Electric's "Black Ghost/Black Girl".
Of the three songs, I thought Hot Lava was the best. It feels very indiepop.
That's it for now, if you have more Halloween-type songs, well, there's always next year.

This band reminds me of gypsy folk music with lots of usage of the fiddle and banjo. The singer, Greg Jamie, has a very mountain man/country twang to his voice. Some of the lyrics on this album do not mean anything (like "aaah hhaaa" or "la da la la la"), but they sound good in the song.
So, the story behind this album's dedication ("for Eliza") is that she's drummer David Rogers-Berry's fiance. She died of an aneurysm late last year - causing the band to understandably cancel their European tour plans. Her death brought the band closer together and it may have influenced their songs.
Check out these depressing lyrics from "Grey Sun":
My favorite song off this album is "Fire on Peshtigo". It has that gypsy element that I mentioned earlier and I think the most interesting thing about this song is that it's actually based on a true event from a destructive fire in Peshtigo, Wisconsin in 1871. This song sounds great and I think it will be a crowd pleaser at a live show.Hang the hardship, baby, we go to sleep and then we die.
Speaking of which, they are on tour, covering Canada, the East Coast, and the Mid-West.
Broken Hymns, Limbs and Skin is out now on Kemado Records, you can find this at most online retailers.

Unlike last year's mega Halloween blast of articles, I will admit that I've been really busy with other stuff. Namely Fallout 3, which is taking up loads of my time.
So far, I've reached Level 6, and striving to become a "sniper" with most of my skill points in Perception, Agility and Strength. I have zero (actually the lowest is a 1) in Charisma, so my dialogue option is very limited. But who needs to be a charmer when you can shoot a Super Mutant in the head at 95%?
I'm loving the game, it looks gorgeous and I think it actually works really well as a first-person, as opposed to its previous turn-based isometric view.
The turn-based thing does exist in the new Fallout, but it's now called V.A.T.S. and you freeze time to target the enemy. I haven't figure out how to build up "action points" while in this mode, but it's amazingly gruesome when you destroy an enemy with a critical shot (we are talking a lot of decapitations).
Some bad news though, the game have high requirements to run on a computer, but it should fare fine on the PS3 and Xbox360 (however I should point out that the computer offers much more higher resolution gameplay due to turning on anti-aliasing up to 8x or high res texture). Also, you can no longer target the groin as an option :/
Still, this is such a great game. It's fun and it doesn't feel repetitive and you're never bored. Plus it's 10x better than Oblivion, especially because the enemies does not level up with you - so you feel like you're accomplishing something when you've invested all these experience points...
Anyway, back to music, here is another cover lover songs - but with a Halloween theme:

ROY G AND THE BIV
roygandthebiv.com ♥ myspace.com/roygandthebiv I was offered some music review for Roy G and the Biv, but due to lack of time, I could not commit to it. Please continue to contact me regarding music submissions, I'm more than happy to look it over, although I can't promise anything. So, in case you were wondering about the name 'Roy G. Biv', it's actually the acronymn of the colors of the rainbow: Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo and Violet. I thought it was pretty clever (and gay), so I did end up listening to this duo's EP. The one song that did catch my attention (that's not on their EP, but you can download this song for free on his myspace) is the cover song of Rockwell's "Somebody's Watching Me", which long-time readers will remember that I've mentioned the original song before. The cover is pretty faithful, yet with their own guitar/keyboard mix to it. It's at time too synthy and the mix seems to overpower the vocals, but I reckon it's fine as it's their take on the song. It's not really my thing, but I will bet that Kate would really love this band, as she's expressed her love for synthpop duos, (such as Cromeo) in our podcast #30 show. |
MARY SHELLEY OVERDRIVE
maryshelleyoverdrive.blogspot.com ♥ myspace.com This South Carolina band is making all three of their EPs available for free via their website. I wanted to mention them today, for the obviously Frankenstein author. I will admit to download all of the EPs to check out, but have only listened to a few songs for sample - they seem to me like industrial-surf-DJ music. That description probably doesn't make a whole lot of sense until you listen to it. The vocals style reminds me of Rob Zombie. I was going to use their "The Lament of Janos Skorzeny", but being a cover lover, I did really enjoy their White Stripes cover "The Hardest Button to Button". It looks like the band just released their self-titled debut album. The description via their website lists:

I was already familiar with Elf Power, who had a break-through album earlier this year called In A Cave, so I was really interested in checking out their contribution to Dark Developments. What surprised me even more is that you can hear them playing backup on this record - and not only that but they will be going on tour with Chesnutt to promote the record.
I haven't heard of Chesnutt, but apparently the guy's really famous. He's been releasing music since the mid 80s, then went solo with the help of Michael Stipe in the early 90s.
Anyway, as the album title suggests, this album is a little darker toned... than say Elf Power's music, which I think has much to do with Chesnutt's vocals over Elf Power's more friendlier indie pop sound of Andrew Rieger (although he is listed on the liner notes as 'singing' - along with all the collaborators).
Some reviewers calling this album's sound harkening to Lou Reed. I think this is only true on some of the songs, especially "The Mad Passion of the Stoic". If you look at something like "And How", it obviously is a little more upbeat- possibly Elf Power's influence on this song.
However, I think my favorite song on here is the not-very-radio-friendly song called "Little F**ker". It's fast and it's rude, and I love it.
Dark Developments was just released last Tuesday on Orange Twin Records.
On another topic altogether, I did enjoy the cover artwork by Terry Rowlett. Upon first glance, you would think this was from the 14th century, but it's actually by a modern artist. The painting is called "Through the Garden" and was painted in 2002.
Also, bonus song is Elf Power's "Spiral Stairs". Enjoy!

heavywaterexperiments.com ♥ myspace.com Not exactly scary, but definitely creepy, the cover art to Heavy Water Experiments' self-titled album shows a woman semi-melting due to a lens distortion. Since I think cover art also lends itself to the overall feel of the album, I would have to say that this album is also moody and dark. I thought one of the more amusing names they used to describe their sound is "Pink Sabbath," which is a very good self-description of the band: a cross between Pink Floyd and Black Sabbath. Also what's worth noting about this band is that it features singer and bassist David Melbye on his 8-string bass/electric guitar. I believe most common bass guitars are four string, and I'm assuming that the extra double bass lines are for low and high of each music note. I can't say that I have the ear to pick up these subtle differences, but they definitely don't really sound like a typical band. The bass isn't at all that aggressive, not like, say, Primus, but it is a big part of their sound. "Anodyne" is the stand-out track for me. Melbye's vocals come in loud and clear on this track and the waves and waves of guitar and sound layers go up at crucial points. Check them out at the Derby:

kineticstereokids.net ♥ myspace.com/kineticstereokids I like, nay, I love doing these singles/EP reviews because these are a quick listen. Judging from the Misfits-type cover artwork, you would think that Kinetic Stereokids are only two kids (one playing the upright bass and the other, the drums)... but their 'space lists at least five band members (although I think there's only officially only four members, judging from their promotional pictures). Their Have A Nice Day EP came out last Tuesday, October 21st which really consists of only two songs, "Have A Nice Day" and "Blunder". The third and bonus track is "Explosions Were Heard", which was recorded live On KEXP. I am assuming it is only a bonus because their 7" color vinyl could not spare the room to fit in an extra six minutes. I actually really enjoyed their live song. It shows me that they have mastered the art of incorporating samples into their live songs and I get the impression that the singer likes to be very, very close to the microphone (listen closely for his spitty lyrics). Also stay tuned at the end of the song, where you can hear the DJ talking to the soft-spoken band members. If you like those Broken Social kids or Arcade Fire kids, I think you'll really like these Kinetic Stereokids. Their Have A Nice Day EP is out now on Overdraft Recordings. Definitely check out their insane Halloween show coming up on the 31st:

gtommac.com ♥ myspace.com/gtommac G Tom Mac, aka Gerard McMahon, is my special guest for W♥M Podcast #28. His latest release is Thou Shall Not Fall, which was recently released as part of The Lost Boys: Tribe. I did manage to rent the sequel on DVD, as I do own and love the original Lost Boys movie by director Joel Schumacher. Talking to Mac, he explained his involvement with both movies, which I'm sure he must've answered a billion times. He also tells me that there will be a tour in Spring of '09, which I will also be mentioning when the time arrives on W♥M, as it seems only a few dates are confirmed at this time (be sure to be at the Virgin Megastore for the signing and spot Corey Heim).
11/01/08 Dracula's Ball Shampoo Nightclub Phila, PA After using "Box of Fantasy" as suggested by Mac, the song ended up stuck in my head for a few days, thanks to its catchy guitar riffs! I also really enjoyed his theme song to another movie, I-See-You.com. Although I hadn't heard anything about this movie, based on the song, it feels upbeat, like a comedy or something. You can get the album via iTunes, but I do recommend getting the CD from amazon. |
joetown.com ♥ myspace.com/joetown Rounding out my vote for scariness is Joe Delaney, aka Joetown. Looking at the all-red cover art for Pills And Ammo, which was released just last August, I can tell you that Joetown scares me. He looks like a cross between the Devil and Jack the Ripper. Anyway, Slash from GNR is one of Joetown's biggest fans, and you can see why: Joetown is an excellent guitarist and songwriter. It's mostly classic 70's style guitar rock, so if you're not into going out drinking at a bar and rocking out, this album might not be your thing. Although mostly guitar-driven songs, I did enjoy the bass-y sound of "Broken Man" and the bluesy 46 second "Devil as Woman" (which I suspect is a cover song?). Some of the weird tactics Joetown uses are distorted vocals and odd sound effects. Speaking of Blues, Joetown thinks most of his songs are basically blues songs: If you like guitar shredding and don't mind a few f-bombs, you'll love "My Anger Knows No Bounds". This sounds almost metal with the hardcore singing. But I've decided to go with "Hole In My Soul" to represent Joetown. This song features a lot of the distorted vocals I mentioned earlier. It's pretty much guitar-city on this song. Pills And Ammo is out now, you can pick it up from CD Baby. |

My favorite genre of music growing up as a teenager in the late 1970's and early 1980's was the stylistic New Romantic movement beginning primarily in the UK. Typical musical proponents of the New Romantic movement were Spandau Ballet, Visage, Japan, Ultravox, Landscape, Adam & The Ants, Culture Club, and Duran Duran - especially during the period from mid-1979 to mid-1983. Some other bands include (to some extent) Simple Minds, A Flock Of Seagulls, Kajagoogoo, Classix Nouveaux, Naked Eyes, and ABC.
The New Romantic movement was similar to that of the glam rock movement in the UK during the early 1970's, in that (male) New Romantics often dressed in caricaturally counter-sexual or androgynous clothing and wore cosmetics in the New Wave extension of (or reply to) punk fashion, with frilly "fop" shirts from the English Romantic period. David Bowie was an obvious influence and interestingly his 1980 single "Fashion" was influenced by and was simultaneously considered to be something of an anthem for the New Romantics, as were Brian Eno and Roxy Music.
The genre's genesis took place largely through clubs such as Billy's in London, which ran David Bowie and Roxy Music nights in the aftermath of punk. This evolved into the Blitz Club and later Hell, which were hosted by Steve Strange (the doorman) and Rusty Egan (the DJ) and in many ways defined the sound of the movement. Boy George was the cloakroom attendant who was fired by Steve Strange for stealing money.
Of the many differences from
glam, however, was that instead of guitar rock, the music was largely
synthesizer based electronic music. Now from my understanding as I
recall, the Danceteria in NYC was an early champion for spotting the
movement, and the Underground in NY had Spandau Ballet for a
performance in 1981. As I recall, this was the beginning of the
movement in America.
By 1983, California saw a slight shortening and "New Ro" (newro) became a trend among teens looking for synthetic medium between the surf and ska inspired "Mod", and the rougher guitar-based punk scene with the Dead Kennedys, the Adolescents, etc.
As with many trends in fashion and music, New Romantic was revived in England in the mid-1990's as a movement called Romo (romantic modern) in clubs such as Club Skinny. Orlando is generally seen to have been the most successful Romo group, and Electroclash, Fischerspooner and others were briefly popular. Personally, I am always looking for new ways and places to help keep the spirit of the music alive!

In my final installment of Halloween treats, I'm going to compile some songs about Werewolves. I actually had a lot more Halloween-related posts I wanted to do, but lately I have not been home.
It began with the Greek mythology about Lycaon who was transformed into a wolf from eating human flesh. The term "werewolf" is based on old English, meaning "man-wolf".
In modern pop culture, the definitive portrayal of the Werewolf was by Lon Chaney Jr in "The Wolf Man" (1941).
Some characteristics of the Werewolves (all based on folklore): Once bitten by a Werewolf, that person also becomes a Werewolf. They turn into a Werewolf on a Full Moon. The only way to kill them is with a Silver bullet.
My favorite Werewolf movies are "Ginger Snaps". The first movie is about two teenage girls. It was brilliantly executed, paralleling the transformation to a Werewolf and going through puberty. The second movie does the same thing - only Werewolf/drug addiction. The third movie takes place in the past. All the sequels are very different from each other, in story and theme, but they are all about Werewolves.
Update: I was gonna add this yesterday, thought better of it, but Vu's convinced me... The Ginger Snaps theme, composed Michael Shields and available only on his website for free download. It's hauntingly good! Oh maybe I should also mention that the girl who played Bridget in the movie, Emily Perkins (shorter darked haired one), came to my Uni a couple years ago to give a lecture / q&a session on the show (all 3 of which we got to see free, though I'd seen the first before), then ran off with and married one of the Uni lecturers! And that thing about puberty is exactly what I though, but apparently it is just about lesbians. Who knew. - Christopher.

My favorite Werewolf song is - hands down - "Werewolf" by Cocorosie. Coco (Bianca Casady) and Rosie (Sierra Casady) are real-life sisters. They have released three albums through Touch and Go Records. I don't know which of the two is singing (probably Coco as her name goes first in their name), but she has this very interesting vocal style. It's like a weird accent, it reminds me a lot of Joanna Newsom[W♥M] |
Warren Zevon has perhaps the best-known song of this group, "Werewolves of London". The song has a comic feel to it and not to be taken too seriously. According to listeners' polls, on the Jeremy Vine show, the first verse is the #1 "Greatest Opening Song Line."
|
|
Running Wild are a German heavy metal band from the 80s. What you probably didn't guess is that this song (and many of their other songs) are in English. "Prowling Werewolf", in particular, is a pretty good song. It's more like a power rock song than metal. An interesting note about Running Wild, is that they became the world's first "Pirate Metal" band. They arrrrr still an active band. |
Speaking of cheesy 80s metal, this song "Werewolf in London" by London, was suggested by This Episode. The song is fairly typical of this genre: loud guitars and the lead singer can really scream. Incidentally, in doing research for this American band, I found out that there is a British band also called London. But they are better suited for this name, seeing as they do live in London... |
|
Harry and the Potters was previously mentioned on W♥M. I've never read any of the books, but I get the impression that one of Harry's teacher was turned in a Werewolf? This information is what I've derived from the song. As for Werewolves in Harry Potter, apparently there's only three in the series: Remus Lupin, unnamed character, and Fenrir Greyback. I've deduced that Lupin is the teacher by day and wolf at night. |
I didn't know about Jon Spencer Blues Explosion's "She Said" until Life in Ruins mentioned it. Listening to the lyrics, it's obvious now. The "She" in this song are words spoken by a Gypsy, who warns that the singer is a Werewolf: "you ain't a man no more, you're outta control. These wolf bites gonna find out what its like to lose your soul." |
|
Scary Bitches has a song called "Werewolf". Beyond that, I don't really know much about this British band. They seem to have a huge following in Germany, and are drenched in Goth-Rock. |
La Union's song "Lobo Hombre in Paris" is a Spanish song, sent in by Cristina. Since I don't understand Spanish, I just thought of that movie "An American Werewolf in Paris" - the sequel to "An American Werewolf in London". But I am assuming this song pre-date the 1997 film? |
|
The Dillinger Escape Plan's "Sunshine the Werewolf" is LOUD. It's too loud and hardcore and screamo for me to really enjoy. I figure if I was ever at one of their live show that I would go deaf instantly. However, before you start to turn down the volume, two minutes into the song and there is a nice break in the song. I still can't figure what the song has to do with Werewolves? |
Cristina also sent in this song "Werewolf on Wheels" by The Born Losers. I had a hell (haha) of a time looking for the album art for this album. It's a various artist album called Halloween Party. I had even a harder time finding any information about The Born Losers. This song is just an instrumental. I guess it's best imagined if you saw a hairy Werewolf on a motorcyle! |
|
Metallica's song "Of Wolf and Man" is essentially about a Werewolf. The song is loud and includes a some crazy guitar noodles half way into the song (this part makes me think of hair bands from the 80s!). My favorite line from the song is: "The company we keep/Roaming the land while you sleep". |
The (Motherf******) Browns are a punchy powerpunk band - similar to Blink 182. I thought this song was very poppy/fun band, and as their song title suggests, they really are based in Calgary, Canada. They're currently releasing their music on Meter Records. |
|
I have to say that I have rather enjoyed this song by Southern Culture on the Skids (SCOTS). The song simply is called "Werewolf". They kind of remind me of surf rock and has a very 70s feel to it (for a band that's in the mid-80s to 90s). |
Finally, remember that Cat Power song that was requested by a reader so long ago? Guess what? It's about a Werewolf! An interesting note about this song is that it's a cover! Originally written by Michael Hurley. Apparently Chan Marshall is a huge Hurley fan as she's also covered two of his other songs, "Sweedeedee" and "Troubled Water". |

Here's my contribution for Halloween related music. I had an idea to post songs that were created specifically for Halloween, can be interpreted as Halloween songs, or conjure up images of Halloween. Hopefully you agree.
Belaire
"Haunted Castle" from Haunted Castle 7"
First up is Belaire's "Haunted Castle" from their out-of-print 7-inch with the same title. It's a perfect Halloween inspired song and the lyrics are quite straight-forward so there's no need for explanation.

"Skulls" from BlackBlack EP 2
BlackBlack's "Skulls" is a Misfits cover about wanting and needing skulls. Instead of the high-energy, upbeat, punk sound, they covered it as a down-tempo, slow, dull (not in a bad way, it fits the tempo), rock song.
Official Website | MySpace
Kate Nash
"Skeleton Song" from Made of Bricks
Kate Nash's "Skeleton Song" is a happy sounding, upbeat, pop song about love, though you don't have to view it that way. Since it's Halloween, you can view it as some weird relationship with a live skeleton.
Official Website | Virb | MySpace | Label
Soko
"The Dandy Cowboys" from Not Sokute - EP
"The Dandy Cowboys" adds to the wonderful songs that Soko creates. It's a love song about a cowboy couple in which a lady is telling a man how much she loves him... or does she?
Virb | MySpace
"Ghosts Have the Best Time" from This Vital Chapter
I'm not exactly sure what this song's about, but I guess if you're dressing up for Halloween, go as a ghost.
MySpace | Label
Jarvis Cocker
"Black Magic" from Jarvis
"Black Magic" is about that dark magic that "blows your mind away and takes you somewhere that you wanna stay".

The Good Life
"October Leaves (October)" from Album of the Year
"October Leaves" isn't about or related to Halloween, but I thought it was a good song to segue away from Halloween. It's a beautiful song about someone acting differently around their partner around this time of the year; "everything's changed."
