The latest DVD we received is a horror movie called Gothkill. This is a straight-to-DVD low budgeted movie, starting America's Got Talent's Flambeaux (as Nicholas Dread), musician Eve Blackwater (as Kate) and Mistress Juliya (as Demonatrix, aka the Devil Girl).
Mistress Juliya's name should come as no surprise to fans of heavy metal, she did, after all hosted Much Music USA's Uranium, then onto its spin-off show, Metal Asylum. Her obvious sex appeal solidified her as a fan favorite, she now appears regularly on No. 1 Countdown Rock show on the MMUSA-turned-Fused TV.
Eve Blackwater's other job seems to be as a fire-eating musician. Her myspace hilariously discourages creeps: "STOP TRYING TO GET IN MY PANTS!!! IT WILL NEVER HAPPEN!!!! sorry to disappoint you."
The story of Gothkill is quite simple, Nicholas Dread, a Catholic Priest tries and save innocent women from accusations of witchcraft. His efforts lead the church to believe he's in league with the devil and sentenced him to be burn with the women he "confessed". This lead to Dread's disenchantment with his religion and made a pact with Satan.
100 years (?) later, in modern-day New York, Dread comes back to finish his deal with the devil. His revenge is unleashed on a stripper/goth club and basically it ends in fire and hell.
The DVD cover artwork by world-famous death metal artist Mike Hrubovcak promises us: B-Movie (check), T&A (check and check), metal (check), bloody gore (check), hell (check), goths (check), and deaths (check). While I did not enjoy very short movie, I would recommend it if you are looking for a midnight gory b-movie with a heavy goth/metal theme (with all the checks above), this will fulfill what you're looking for.
Also, it's not quite as comedic or as cheesy as some of the reviewers made it out to be, sure there are some unintentional bad acting, but that's to be expected with these type of film. I thought the
Gothkill was released May 12th, you can netflix this (it's available, I just checked). If you insist on buying a copy for your Mistress Juliya collection or for the extras (including audio/video commentary by director JJ Connelly, Flambeaux, and Blackwater), you can head over to Gothkill Store. Watch the trailer at Wild Eye Releasing.

The application is really designed for DJs for determining beats per minute (BPM), for, what I'm assuming so they can match music to that thumping-thumping noise. The application was created and developed by Epic Tilt, who is the company-for-hire when big companies need to cross promote their product (such as that Be Like Lady Gaga application). It's actually a smart way to promote, I'm just wondering why companies don't concentrate their efforts on applications.
I did download and tested out the BPM application and discovered that this application was not meant for me. This is really for DJs, as I have previously mentioned. After testing four songs, the number given back to me ranges from 100-200 BPM and that's pretty much it. You can then save the information on a playlist or assign notes to it or share them with your DJ friends.... but I found that since I did not understand the use of the BPM, it quickly became a useless application for me.
However, if you're a DJ, or interested in DJ work, I think this application is valuable to you. Plus the price is just right: FREE.

It
would seem like most current/modern bands all have Twitter accounts
now. If not setup by the band themselves, it's set up by their record
label. Pretty soon, all musicians will have a Twitter account, like
they do with their Myspace.
W♥M Twitter experienced a huge spike with all the bands migrating to the service - we had +63 adds since last night, mostly by bands. It's not John Mayers numbers, but it's big for us.
And I have said it before: I don't get what all the fuss is about with Twitter. Why is the country in love with it? The limitation of 140 characters kills me.... plus people use it as a popularity contest. Also, once you add more than 50 people to follow, it becomes absolutely useless. I know hardcore Twitter users basically use 3rd party applications to keep them organize (since Twitter doesn't offer such functionality).
The microblogging service hit mainstream media earlier this year with Ashton vs CNN and Oprah endorsing it. Recently, I was at a grocery store when I saw The Times with twitter for their front page story.
If you're new to Twitter, or interested in being more productive on Twitter, here are some services that I use and endorse:
- Tweet Later: Automatically follow people that follows you - and the best part, it also drops people that unfollow you.
- Twitterfeed: Automatically post feeds (RSS).
- We Follow: A directory of twitterers, ranked by popularity.

What do you get when you mix elements of '80s-style goth-rock, classic '70s hard rock, funk, blues, and just a tiny touch of metal? Don't ask me, but whatever it, Twilight Dementia (Myspace) is doing it. And doing it well.
Twilight Dementia are vocalist Jennifer Mendiola and multi-instrumentalist John Krauss. They've been together since 2006, but their self-titled first album has just been self-released via CD Baby. By the time you're halfway through opening track "Deliverance," though, you will notice that this is one act that has been buffed to a high shine. The production is exceptional and the songwriting solid, but what keeps this album going is its sheer eclecticism. It's been a while since I've heard a group that explores so many different musical angles yet still manages to deliver great material.
"Deliverance" is a fairly straightforward ethereal goth-rock number that sounds a bit like a cross between Siouxsie & The Banshees and Evanescence, with Mendiola's smooth, creamy voice floating over Krauss' grinding guitars and punchy drums. "Good Enough," however, opens with a seriously funky acoustic guitar line and a rockin' beat, and manages to be both groovy and somber at the same time. "Lullaby" is a dreamy, spare ballad built from a simple kickdrum pace, shimmery guitars, and lush vocals. "No Way Out" begins with a heavy, bluesy guitar riff straight from the arena-rock of the 1970s that develops into a powerful percussive jam. Only four tracks into the album and we've covered at least four or five different musical influences--but there's still a lot more ground to cover, and Twilight Dementia certainly does its best to explore as many genres as it can while maintaining a consistently spacey dream-pop sound.
This is the kind of album that I love to listen to over and over again, because it never gets boring. Just when you think you've got their music pinned down, Mendiola and Krauss change it up and offer you something completely different. Each track is a new discovery leading the listener to different climes. Artists who manage to produce such work (Mr. Bungle, Tool, and Modest Mouse immediately come to mind) usually end up with highly-devoted cult followings made up of all manner of music fans, because the diversity of their music draws in listeners from many different genres. And if there's one group that deserves a cult following, it's Twilight Dementia.

I have to say, I'm really digging the concept behind Eternal Descent. The 12 track album is done in a three acts (groups of 4 tracks per act) and tries to recreate a storyline. Their basis is in visual comic book (the art looks very anime) and according to the press release the cartoon characters, in some small way, represent the singer Elysha (Lyra, the demon) and guitarist Llexi (Sirian, the angel).
The whole album can only be describe as some sort of gothic rock opera. I can totally visualize their concert to have live actors playing and singing their parts as the cityscape goes from a wonderful metropolis to skeletal frame of a city.
Music and comic art (the artist used on their album is Ben Krefta) is not the only thing that this band is working on, apparently an animated feature of "Into the Darkness" is coming soon. You can see a sneak peak here.
The song tells the story about Lyra's fall into darkness, hence the title of the song. You can also download the song for free on their myspace.
Eternal Descent's album is called Losing Faith and was released last year. You can buy their CD at CD Baby.

Lecia plays a kinda funky country gothic rock, and there's not a song on the EP (her only release to date) that I don't love. Bear with Fly for the first couple minutes, it goes on a bit but picks right up halfway through, and starts sounding like the Manics crossed with a decent singer (sorry James-Dean). If that doesn't convince you, below is some more of her performance skills; a montage of clips from various shows. Which is even better when you consider that apparently the rest of the band only learnt the tunes the day before or something, and Lecia seems to thing it's not so great :oO Please watch, it don't last long, then go comment on her MyFace explaining how wrong she is to doubt her own skills. And finally, emigrate to Oz for some gigs around Queensland later this month.
UPDATE: Audio removed due to impending release - May 2008!
Woot. Back to be pwned by the embed alignments. Oh how I enjoy this place...
Getting left aligned after 30 minutes struggling today is Midasuno's Sister Temptation, taken from their almost quite new debut album Songs In The Key Of Fuck. Will I be spanked by Vu for saying that? You wish you'd said it now don't you...
I've known lead singer Scott since he started bugging me on MSN for demos of my favourite band, incidentaly liking them so much he got their lead singer to sing on the Key Of... album, but enough of that. Midasuno are an alt-metal-rock band from the depths of Merthyr Tydfil in south Wales (that bit to the left of England for those of you who care not for principalities).
The first Midasuno songs I heard were demos Scott sent me over afformentioned MSN and were promptly listend to every day while I tried to get fit while jogging along the beaches of mid-wales during Uni. And as said fitness increased, seemingly so did Midasuno's musical efforts. So good are they now that the album powered me over four miles a couple days ago, and if that ain't a sign of a good album I dunno what is. Surprisingly the new album still contains some of the original demos I heard which have also been a part of numerous Midasuno single and EP releases since. Thank god they know a good song when they make one, I can't be having with bands who keep their best tracks to themselves *cough*crimea*cough*. Ah cummon... like I'd get though a post without mentioning them.
Back to this track; Sister Temptation's the lead tune on the album and... I dunno what's up with Scott's voice, I guess he's gone for an ironicly auto tuned Ibiza dance act sound on the song, though almost every other track is distinctively 'suno. The band always manage to get an unhealthy amout of melodies and sing along tunes into a genre that's far too often devoid of it; Reactions becoming an epic sounding orchestral affair and 1997 beating the best of the UK's indie rock efforts. Klaxons? Mercury winners? Fuck off.
