Their sound is formulaic Sarah Records indiepop, you know, music designed for you either close your eyes or look at your feet while you sway slowly under a non-aggressive 80s modern rock vocals. Sometime there's even a break and the song goes from sleepy dreamy to catchy upbeat (see: "Show Some Love, When Your Man Gets Home" and "I Left My Love in Nagasaki").
While many songwriters write about themselves, I don't get that feeling with this band as their subjects are all over the place: Asians (Korea, Japan), small-town love stories ("Sadie & Andy"), suburban couple in Germany ("Martina and Clive Krantz"), and Dear John letters ("Sylvie"). Story-wise, it's very diverse and interesting, and I also get the impression that the songwriters, Jesse & Matt Kivel, are also well-read and well-traveled, collecting little stories for their songs.
So, while "Shout it Out", the preceding single, is pretty much a love song, I felt "Sadie & Andy" is a better love song. Actually, the love song is on Andy's part, who longs for Sadie. Sadie, on the other hand, evolved and moved on, while Andy is stuck as a grocery stockboy. The same theme is recycled on "Sylvie", about said-girl who went away, although on this song, there's a hint of humor on the song, especially about the gift of "socks".
While these are sad songs, but I think this song would be great to be heard life - especially with surprise female guest vocalist - such as Amy from Ice Palace (the studio version features Meredith Metcalf on girl-vocals).
If you see the band live, yes, they are touring with Ra Ra Riot, you may get confused about the band members - that's because singer Jesse Kivel is a twin brother of bassist Matt. I am assuming you can pick up their album at one of their shows, if not, you'll have to wait until September 29th to get Cocoon of Love.

So what's interesting, right off the top, is that the folk-ish band writes and sings in English. I believe most of the songs are written by Daumail, so he also sings on most of the song. His voice is very unique, almost nasally, but you get used to it after a few songs. There are some vocals from Imbeaud, which often sounds very melodic, but unfortunately she's mostly used as backup.
Daumail seems very obsessed with flying - particularly birds (owls, hummingbirds, and vultures). He later sings, "I hate birds" on "Tell Me". Even their poppiest, and I think their best song, is about queen "Owl". The song doesn't really make sense to me, but I know at some point there is a missing treasure in the forest and a bear hunter.
If you like that LSD-ness, combined with what people are comparing the band to other artists like Sufjan Stevens and Nick Drake, then you definitely need to check out Cocoon. Apparently, they have a huge buzz in the UK, having selling out shows across Europe. They are playing some tiny venues in the US, so if you're lucky enough to live in those major cities, check them out.
If you can get around the flash-y Minty Fresh website, I'm sure there are instructions on how to buy My Friends All Died In A Plane Crash. Looking at amazon, I see that it's priced ridiculously at import cost of $38 (hint: used is only $12).

| W♥M049: Lio [download (11 mins)] |
Okay, so I'm in love with Lio, and it's somewhat frustrating to find out that she's not at all recognized/remembered in America. Today's W♥M Radio #49 episode will be about the Belgium lolita known simply as "Lio", named after a brown-haired teenage girl from the French comic book-turned-movie Barbarella.
My favorite song "Les brunes comptent pas pour les prunes", which literally translates to "The brown ones are not plums". The correct meaning actually was translated and sung in English by Lio called "Brunettes Are No Puppets", which was released as a single to the English-speaking countries circa 1986.
Well, I wish I can un-hear "Brunettes Are No Puppets", as I think I prefered it when I didn't know what Lio was singing about. But that's just the way it goes.
If you are thinking of getting an album from Lio, since most of her records was sold in France and possibly are out of print, the second-hand market can be very expensive. Some quick check and here's some examples: the rarely seen nude cover Wandatta for $42 and her only English album Suite Sixtine priced at $39... So yes, quite expensive. I did find a "Greatest Hits" Best of Lio, album for $19, that should get you started.

Bastille Day 2009 ♥ flyer |
The seven-band line up for Bastille Day was open and free to the public block party, however if you wanted to drink alcohol, you had to pay $1 for a wristband (the privileges of paying more to drink). There was only one food vendor and they mostly served burgers and brats.
I saw most of the bands on the bill, from the gypsy-style music of Yid Vicious, to hip-hop Sims & Paper Tiger of Doomtree, to Americana Romantica.
I was mostly there to check out Idle Hands, whose influences of British 80s music (Bowie, Smiths, Pulp) was enough for me to want to get there early to see them. It sounded like a rocky start with their first song with the vocals and guitars fading in and out. The music got better and better, as they went on. I suppose it's not surprising when you think about that the band had no sound checks and you would think the first song is the soundcheck.
Inbetween setting up music, you were entertained by aerialist Jim Domenick, street performers (wasn't sure if some of them were official or not!) and the not-too-exciting Rollergirls.
The last band I saw before we left was Halloween, Alaska, who ended their set with a Bruce Springsteen song, "State Trooper". Which actually doesn't sound like any Springsteen song I've ever heard (and that's the best part).

Sticks is an all-instrumental album (there are vocals harmonies by Cosmika, but it's rare and mostly used as backdrops). The album takes us on a journey back in time to that 60s/70s era and I never felt listening to the album that it took me into the future. All the instruments sounds very organic, with emphasis on percussions and drums (as noted in the album title) and especially the sitar which happens to appear on several tracks ("Melisma Mercury","Rififi Rococo","Little Nature"), giving it a distinct Indian/Asian sound.
Besides from taking and keeping us in the past, I also felt that Sticks did a wonderful job on mixing between music genres. For instance, the sixties-sounding go-go dancing of "Danger Buds" is paired next to funk-sounding "Rififi Rococo" (which actually sounds strangely like Russian folk music), then back to 60s with a Farfisa organ (?) of "Night Scare", then back to 70s funk with "Root Juice".
What I love is that you're always looking forward to where Joss takes you, at least I was never bored at any given point... Although I will admit the atmospheric song of "Tune Down" was a bit too loungey and way heavy on the bass for my taste.
If you're a vocals/singing fan, I don't recommend this album to you. If you like non-vocals DJ-style type of music, such as Thievery Corporation (they are one my top 10 bands on lastfm), U.N.K.L.E., and those Verve Remixed albums, you'll find Chris Joss right up your musical alley.
Sticks was released last Tuesday, March 10th, you can purchase it at most retailers, however you might have the best luck via the US record label, ESL Music.

ganggangdance.com ♥ myspace.com Gang Gang Dance caused quite a stir on last year's CMJ. I know for a fact that they left a great impression on all the people that went to see them. Their music is best described as "experimental", if not world primitive or tribal rhythm (see Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Apache Beat). Saint Dymphna is their fourth album, having already established themselves in the New York scene. If you listen carefully to the album, each song flows into the next with background noises and such. Among the songs that stood out, I did enjoyed the rap-ish song "Princes", which is sung by Tinchy Stryder. He's from London, so you can hear the distinctive accent in his lyrics. Although this could easily be their stand-out-track, I felt it wouldn't represent the band's sound as it sounds pretty different from the rest of the album. While as much as I enjoy the occasional, as Lara puts it, "Weird Crazy Things That Sound Like Woodlawn Creatures and Kitchen Utensils", Saint Dymphna does an OK job on balancing this sound with more pop-friendly tunes like "House Jam". "House Jam", along with "First Communion" and "Princes", really made the album worth checking out, even if you don't like that sort of thing. So find out why Fact Magazine thinks "one of the best albums we've heard all year." You can pick up anywhere, including amazon and itunes. They will be heading out to do a massive world tour:

tapesntapes.com ♥ myspace.com I'm not qualify to write this review, but since I couldn't actually convince my local writers here to do an article on their second album, Walk It Off, because they actually paid real-life money for it... I don't know what all the fuss is about this band. I think sometime in 2007, I started hearing this band a lot from friends and not-so-friends. So definitely, there's some huge buzz and they're known in other parts of the world - not just in Minneapolis. Andrew reckons that the band got so massive that they basically left Darren (from Kid Dakota) on his own for his just-released The Hopefuls' album (someone, not me, is supposed to review this one). Anyway, my expectation for Tapes 'N Tapes' Walk it Off is that it's supposed to be fun and bouncy and dancey. It's not. The album failed on all three accounts. Maybe I'm just not listening to it right? The most exciting song on the album is possibly "Le Ruse", all the other songs, including their single, "Hang Them All", did not did not impress me. Hey, but if you're looking for a cool indie band, you should check out Tapes 'N Tapes, everyone else seems to love them. paschicchic.com ♥ myspace.com Pas Chic Chic! (which means "not smart"?) are a band based out of Montreal, Canada. Their debut album, Au Contraire was released last year on Semprini Records... and it's entirely in French. The songs are mostly sung by Eric (?), with the exception of a few songs by Marie-Douce ("Se Mirer Mare", "Mlle Mille" and "Brise Méprise") which comes off as very 60s girl pop. Eric's songs sounds like it's trying to be sexy, and maybe it is to girls swooning over his sex Canadian French accents. There's a few brilliant pop songs on the album that I really enjoy, including "Mlle Mille" and "Tesclichés Déclenchés". My favorite is "En Chaine et en Vogue", which is a good example of their sound because the boy-girl vocals works very well here. Apparently the band caught the attention of Julian Cope (who apparently when not being a musician is also a music critic): Look for the band coming up on "Canadian Music Week" on March 12th in Toronto. You can find Au Contraire digitally (itunes or emusic) or CD via amazon. |

myspace.com Possibly one of the worst name for a band, and equally "catchy" album name, is Pee-Pee's Castile Jackine is Vooded at Broonus Mousin: Volume 1. If you can get past the name(s), this is a pretty interesting and developed band, from the strange non-sense improv of "Freakout Jam" to rock funk of "I Love U 2 Much" to the melodic folk "I Hope My New House Feels Welcoming For You". There's a lot of layers in their music, with a lot of instruments that you would find in bluegrass or Americana band: a saw here, an accordion there. I'm not sure if I hear the banjo, but I wouldn't be surprise if they incorporate that in their music. What sets them apart from traditional Americana bands is that they seem to really enjoy using technology to make them sound warp. For example, check out the sound from the acoustic guitar on "Love needs a Quivering, Restless, Aching, Fire to Lay its Head On" and vocals on "Madness Song (remix)". The different shifts in style and tone of their songs makes the album all over the map. I'll only recommend the album if you enjoy different genre of music, but fans of Animal Collective and Of Montreal to 60s psychedelic rock should like this band. Be on the look out for Volume Two of Castile Jackine..., as the album is actually already "in the can" as they say. Apparently in recording of their album, they had enough material to be split on two albums. You can get Castile Jackine..., released last November on the Helmet Room Label, at most online stores (emusic), physical CDs can be found on cdbaby. PS, bonus points for utilizing "Hey Jude" on "O, Little Boy". |

The lyrics are lovely, aren't they? According to the liner notes, Ooldouz Ghelichkhani is credit as taking part in the song-writing of this song. She is also listed as co-writer for "Sweet Tides", another lovely song that ends the album. The reoccurring theme of Radio Retaliation is about rebellion, and it's evident in their reggae-inspired songs (but with that certain dub and beats of Thievery Corp): "Sound The Alarm", "Radio Retaliation", "Vampires", "Hare Krishna" (to some extent since it's more dancey on this song), and "Blasting Through The City". Perhaps is the inherit rebellious nature of reggae music from its Rastafari movement (Rasta) - a religious movement to accept Jesus Christ and Haile Selassie I as incarnations of Jah (God). What Thievery Corporation is doing is very exciting and I'm happy to say that the album is out today, September 23rd on ESL Record. |

This was a very painless article for me to write, because I am, as you have probably guessed, I am a Blondie fan. I already had several of their albums, some greatest hits/compilations, and was especially looking forward to check out the 30th Anniversary Edition of Parallel Lines. I already had the original 1978 album (which I bought when they reissued it with some bonus tracks), so I already knew all the songs on the Anniversary Edition.
For those that don't have Parallel Lines and their biggest hit, possibly best-known song, "Heart of Glass" is on this album. Other big hits for them includes, "Hanging on the Telephone" - which I previously mentioned was a cover of The Beat.
Revisiting the album, I realized just how good "Picture This" is:All I want is a room with a view/A sight worth seeing, a vision of you/I will give you my finest hour, the one I spent watching you shower. Although I think this is a great song, it never made it on singles format in the US (although it was the leading single in the UK).
I suppose, it's to be expected because the US was still really into disco (which would explain why "Heart of Glass" did so well), but the UK was more progressive in their music taste (which would explain why they love the Carribean-beat song of "Sunday Girl").
The album ends with "Just Go Away", with its hard-to-get lyrics: "Don't go away sad/Don't go pre-fab/Don't go be bad/Don't go away mad, just go away. JUST GO AWAY!"
That's just the perfect album! The special extra bonus are four songs: "Heart of Glass (7" single version)", "Sunday Girl (French Version"), "Hanging on the Telephone [Nosebleed Handbag Remix]" and "Fade Away and Radiate [108 BPM Remix]".
Between the four song, I especially liked the French version of "Sunday Girl", a song that sounds refreshingly new because I have never heard this particular version. Apparently the song appeared as either an A-Side or B-Side on the "Sunday Girl" 7" that was released in the UK.
The other extra songs, I am guessing is rare. I didn't really care so much for them, as the 7" version of "Heart of Glass" sounds pretty much like the album mix.... while the techno/trance version of "Fade Away and Radiate" sounds nothing like the album version. Talk about extreme end of the spectrum.
There is also a bonus DVD that comes with Parallel Lines: 30th Anniversary Edition. The videos are for promo videos for "Picture This", "Hanging On The Telephone", and "Heart Of Glass", with one previously unreleased Top of the Pops performance of "Sunday Girl". Debbie Harry looked incredibly cool on TOTP, despite badly lip-syncing. I love all the videos, particularly the disco video for "Heart of Glass". My only complaint is that it's only four videos, you'll go through them in no time. Still, it is a nice bonus.
You can pick up Blondie's Parallel Lines: 30th Anniversary Edition at any retail location. If you have never own this album, the 30th Anniversary version is definitely the superior version to get. If you already have the LP, why not upgrade?
They are currently wrapping up their tour dates for promotion of this album... and I hope they come back touring, as I think the last time they were on tour was in 2003 for "The Curse of Blondie".

Item #1: Hey, I'll be attending Annuals' live show tomorrow (June 13th) at the Varsity Theater. I think it's all ages, which means the show will start pretty early (5-6pm). Look for me if you're going to this show also.
Check out their other dates, you can sign up at Canvasback Music for a chance to attend the concert of your choice, runner up receive a free Wet Zoo EP. In addition, if you're in the Minneapolis area, the grand winner will also receive a pair of tickets to the Underwater Adventures Aquarium (I think it's in the Mall of America).
It doesn't cost anything to enter in the contest, so you might as well enter. The worst you can do is not win.
I will write a little more about the Annuals on my concert review, so that's scheduled for Saturday morning.
PS, I just entered into their contest.
Item #2: Remember Prototypes? You guys love them. It looks like their song "L'Amour, L'Amour, L'Amour", from their third album, Synthetique (out on Minty Fresh), have been recently used in various commercials (iPod and Mitsubishi) and television shows (The L Word).
I got the chance to listen to the said song and it's very cute. Obviously, I still cannot speak French, but it doesn't seem like there's a whole lot of complicated lyrics here... but still, there is something about the French accent that gets me everytime.
My question is, why weren't they on Eurovision 2008?
Item #3: I got this press release about Prince Fatty. I am only mentioning this because I laughed at just his name, as well as his album Survival Of The Fattest.
I listened to the MP3 that sometime comes with these things and it wasn't what I was expecting: it's reggae! Very interesting, I've decided to include the song here as well as mention his two dates he'll be playing:
July 16 Los Angeles The Dub Club
July 18 New York Hudson Terrace
After doing more reading, it becomes clear to me that 'fat' might be in reference to pot (smoke a fatty) because the fatty himself, Mike Pelanconi, is a skinny white dude.
Mike and Fatboy Slim should have a duel. That's right, Survival Of The Fattest.

"Seasons in the Sun" is one of those songs that is massively popular in Asia, especially where I'm from originally in Vietnam. I found out that the song is actually a 1961 Belgian French song called "Le Moribond" (The Dying Man) by folk singer Jacques Brel.
Brel lived in Belgium and moved to Paris in the 70s, and most of his body of work (from 1954 to 1977), was mostly composed and sung exclusively in French.
The song was translated into English and recorded as a song by Rod McKuen, which sounds kind of like Leonard Nimoy's acting/singing... especially at the end, where it gets a little exaggerated. I found the recording on imeem, so hopefully the embedding feature will work out.
Prior to Terry Jacks hit recording, there were several attempts by The Kingston Trio (1963) and The Fortunes (1968), and Pearls Before Swine (1970), but none of them ever got as popular as Jacks' version in 1974.
A couple of notes, about the Fortunes, they are still active (and playing live) and have the "Seasons in the Sun" song available for download on their website, although from listening to it, it sounds like, perhaps it's a re-recording(?). Anyway, some tour dates:

So the story behind the #1 hit song by Canadian singer Terry Jacks, was that Jacks had proposed to The Beach Boys to record "Seasons in the Sun", but The Beach Boys abandoned the project. Jacks decided to record and release the song himself, and to this day have sold over six million copies.
The main difference in Jacks' version and previous versions, was that his version is a little happier, including removing the 'cheating wife' part.
Speaking of happy, Westlife's version is ... let's just say quite interesting. Their singing and upbeat song doesn't really carry across the message of a dying man. At all. Still the song did well for them, although it was eventually left off their Greatest Hits CD in 2002, possibly due to licensing/royalities rights.
A vast contrast to Westlife's poppy version is from Nirvana, who seems to stumble through the song. It's also interesting to note that you see Kurt Cobain playing the drums, instead of Dave Grohl (who looks like he's playing bass in the video).
Also interesting to note is that the song is vastly popular with punk bands such as Bad Religion, Me First and the Gimme Gimmes and Blink 182.
I am including a few other covers below, my favorite is Black Box Recorder, who I've previously mentioned. Their version sounds like a French film soundtrack :).

Don't forget the awesome version by Too Much Joy (click the Play link next to the track on that page. You can listen to 25 tracks per month free on Rhapsody). They were one of my favorites back in the day, and they still do the best version that I've ever heard. Even better live.
Here are some random album artwork that's sexually suggestive. We're not talking explicit or anything, just some eye-catching covers that I've noticed.
The first album here is the 2005 self-titled debut album from French singer, Pauline Croze (paulinecroze.com). The cover shows (what looks like) a naked Croze, looking innocent with her doll-like eyes. She was twenty-five when they took that picture for her debut album, but the truth is she started writing and playing music when she was fourteen.
Last year, she released Un Bruit Qui Court, and seems to be more popular than ever.
Neon Neon (myspace.com/neonx2) has a rather suggestive and rude cover for his EP, Raquel. I don't really know much about him, apparently he's currently residing in Los Angeles, by the way of Wales?
This song, "Raquel", reminds me of early 80s new wave dance music, which I like... and apparently other people like him too as he's featured on the cover of last month's BPM Magazine.
Look closely at the cover to 2008's We're In the Music Biz by Robots In Disguise (robotsindisguise.co.uk) and you might be surprised. They're actually naked, with body paint. I guess they're more than meets the eye, huh?
If you got that joke, that's because they stole their name from Transformers[W♥M].
These two English girls reminds me of DIY punk DJs mixing some electronic music (but they also sing). They sound really fun, don't they?
Speaking of looking closer, does the map of Make it Happen by Nizlopi (nizlopi.com) remind you of something else?
I think the cover is pretty clever actually, nothing too sexual, and at a quick glance, you wouldn't notice the woman's body.
Apparently there's only two members in this band: Luke Concannon and John Parker, two dudes from Leamington Spa in the UK. They got their name (Nizlopi) from Concannon's crush on a Hungarian girl.
While I Walk You Home features what looks like two people about to do the horizontal tango, but with the sunlight through the window, I would have to guess this is the morning after.
Despite the somewhat sleazy cover art (at least I think so), the music of Norway's Dylan Mondegreen (dylanmondegreen.com) is actually quite nice and folky.
Finally, we have a blatant booby cover of What's Wrong With You from New York's The Crayons (thecrayonsmusic.com).
I hope the tanned gorgeous babe on the cover sell some CDs, and as easy-on-the-eye as the cover, they're actually easy-on-the-ear as well.
Check out this song "God Hates Me".
So, this ends the first part on "Sex Sells". I hope to have a collection of "unintentional porn" in my next article. (Please send me some suggestions).
