I love April March and France Gall.
Episode #26 used/mentioned these bands: Stormy Monday, Holdin Caufield, Soft Targets, Brass Bed, Serge Gainsbourg (W♥M, Charlotte Gainsbourg (W♥M), April March (W♥M), and France Gall (W♥M).
I originally was going to compile my favorite seven posts I've made (out of 380+ posts) and it proved too, too much! Anyway, since I previously compiled something similar to this (see W♥M Award Nomination), this post will be an easy breeze.
I present to you: the Top 7: Favorites! Yes, these were voted by you guys. If you don't like any of these songs, it's all your fault.
Coming in at 16 Favorites is Stars. Stars, Stars, Stars! It's always about Stars.
France Gall's "Laisse Tomber Les Filles" song got 13 Favorites. If you don't understand French, check out April March's "Chick Magnet".
Dolly Parton's "Jolene", the one, and only, original classic song is marked with 12 Favorites. To hear eight "Jolene" cover songs, head over to my abandoned Cover Lover.
"Sway" by Dean Martin got 10 Favorites. It's such a great song, I'm sad to see it so low if you ask me.
And seriously, Stars once against shows up unexpected with "Heart" with 10 Favorites. I suspect the reason why this song got marked up recently is because it was mentioned in the Top 7: Concerts.
Jonathan Coulton probably would charted higher if we'd use his "Code Monkey" song (which is a favorite among nerds), but instead "Baby Got Back" is just as awesome with 9 Favorites. You can download "Baby Got Back" from jonathancoulton.com.
Incidentally, since Alanis Morissette did a similar cover of My Humps, Coulton loves it and covered Morissette's You Oughta Know.
Speaking of similar, OrangeAppled said that The Parcels's "Jessica Pancakes" is "to the tune of the Associations' "Windy"...." I've since checked out the said-song and you know what? Wow it's practically stolen! Still 8 Favorites from you guys managed to keep it on the top 7.
After researching Sunshine Pop, I might check out more stuff in this genre because I've already am a big fan of The Beach Boys and The Mammas and the Pappas... so look for this article next year.
So what's up and coming? These are hot: Kerry Politzer's Always with (5), This Morning Call's Clockworks (5), The Chemical Brothers's The Salmon Dance (5) Colin Meloy's Jack the Ripper (5), The Legendary K.O.'s George Bush Doesn't Care About Black People (5), Hans Zimmer's Spider Pig (5), and Asha Bhosle's Mohabbat Hoon Haqiqat Hoon (5).
So this is the 7th and final installment of the Top 7. I have to say that it was really fun to look back at 2007! I'm so excited for Top 8, aren't you?

Celebrating our 500th post!!
I actually planned on doing a bunch of "500" songs, but I didn't think that would really represent W♥M. So I thought back and remembered that we sort of had a contest about which songs were your favorite.
As it turns out, the clear winner is Stars' "This Charming Man", a favorite here since we've mentioned them several times now.
So let's take a look at why this song is good? First of all it's a Smiths cover song, so instantly there's something to be liked. Then there is Stars' unique take on the song, mixing melody with a dance beat.
When you add it up, it's a very excellent song!

I was planning on saving this review for Wednesday as I am supposed to be heading to Liverpool tonight to see Regina Spektor in concert. However, I couldn't resist but to ramble on about Flowers From The Man Who Shot Your Cousin (FFTMWSYC). Anybody who has listened to the We♥Music Podcast will know I am becoming a big fan.
I have spent all day listening to the FFTMWSYC's album, Hapless. I doubt very much it will be leaving my playlist any time soon and it is destined to hit my car stereo in the near future. It is gentle folk and genuinely relaxing with insightful lyrics.
Before I go any further, I have to declare a bias. While researching FFTMWSYC, I contacted the group to discover that FFTMWSYC was, in fact, just one man and his name is Morgan Caris. Not only is he a really great musician but he also manages to be a pretty swell guy at the same time. During our brief exchange of email, he has recommended a number of pretty awesome folk groups. All of which will be featured at We♥Music.com at some point in the future. Ok, on to the review...
In this day and age, I doubt there is a modern folk singer alive who doesn't list Leonard Cohen as an influence of some sort. Morgan is no different. The thing that sets Cohen part from the rest, in my opinion, is he is a powerful lyricist. Cohen relies heavily on his poetic background to cover up the fact he isn't the world's greatest vocalist. That's right, you may not have notice, Cohen doesn't have that beautiful a singing voice but hell, he has a magic that comes from his lyrics. Morgan isn't Cohen. I don't think he'd mind me pointing that out because Cohen is a one-off, a classic. But FFTMWSYC is special.
In terms of singing ability, it is Morgan's vocals make his songs so mellow. Of course he is aided by the softness of his guitar. With no
reluctance, I am happy to declare this man has a beautiful voice. But there are
a lot of singers out there with great voices. Where Morgan comes into his own is
in his lyrics. I could throw adjectives, such as soulful, reflective
and deep, at you but it is better to hear his songs first hand than for me to detracted
from his abliity to capture real life moments and enlightened thoughts.
I am assuming his lyrics have been shaped by his travels between continental Europe, where he was born, and continental America, where he has spent a great deal of time. Regardless, each song contains a different treasure to be discovered; whether it be in betraying an old friend with his new wife (Sweet Wife) or in searching for a vast forest and only finding a branch (The Branch).
During the 90s,
Morgan released a number of records as part of the French group,
Loons. Here at We♥Music, we are aware you love covers. The Loons released
a twee
cover of France Gall's "Ne sois pas si bete", which is available to
listen to
here and can be downloaded at their last.fm page.
However the music of FFTMWSYC is far from twee. It is definitely folk and positioned on the darker side of folk. One of the highlights of Hapless is the wonderfully bitter "I Do Not Love You Anymore" which contains the glorious line, "The things you said I did so well, I did them all to someone else." This is a fine example of the dry wit that is found throughout the album.
The song I have chosen to share here, "Lay Down Your Arms", is just as well crafted as "I Do Not Love You Anymore", and definitely a lot more beautiful in its subject matter, a plea from one lover to another. It has already featured on the We♥Music podcast but I love it so much I thought I'd post it again.
If you are interested in learning more about the man behind FFTMWSYC, check out his interview over on 8hands and find out why he may travel your home and smother you in your sleep. Moreover, you can listen to his appearance on New York Public Radio's Spinning On Air with the smooth sounding David Garland. If you don't want to listen to the broadcast in full then fast forward 20 minutes in and you'll find Morgan's songs.
Morgan is a man with a definite web presence. He can be found at last.fm, myspace, virb and MOG. I get the feeling he is a member of these sites more to discover new music than to promote his own.
This September FFTMWSYC will be found touring the major cities of France with the wonderful June Madrona. There is also the possibility of a UK tour with Kevin House.
If you've liked what you've heard here, there are free downloads available at FFTMWSYC's last.fm page and streamed tracks on myspace. Hapless can be purchased at Bicycle (USA) and Drunk Dog Shop (Europe). It is definitely a good sign that the Bicycle store is currently sold out.
I stumbled upon Flowers From The Man Who Shot Your Cousin only a few days ago so I don't claim to have a vast knowledge of his works. Although, I will confess I was tempted to head to Lyon on 15 September 2007 to catch up with an old French friend and catch one of his shows. However, in a very un-rock and roll fashion, I have doctor's appointment that day and my bank manager would probably issue bankruptcy proceedings against me.
If you are looking for a chilled-out, challenging album then I recommend you sample Morgan's Hapless. As behind the unusual name, Flowers From The Man Who Shot Your Cousin, you'll find a stunning collection of folk songs crafted by a sophisticated soul.

I was really excited to hear the English version to "Laisse Tomber Les Filles" at the end of Grindhouse. I didn't know that this song was remade to "Chick Habit" in 1995 (the original song was written by Serge Gainsbourg for France Gall in 1964), by a woman called April March.
So I listened to both song - both are identical, except, obviously, the language. I may be leaning towards the US version only because I understand it :)
PS, It looks like
the Grindhouse soundtrack is available in two CDs, the Planet Terror
soundtrack and the Death Proof soundtrack. Complete track listing can
be found on www.soundtrackcollector.com
UPDATE: OMG! I just remembered that I used to play April March on my radio show!! The song I played was called "Kooky", it was released under the Kokopop label (which was also responsible for the Chia Pet single)! Mel, you probably remember this !! :)

[this is good] The song also appears prominently in indie flick But I'm A Cheerleader, starring Natasha Lyonne. On the strength of it, I bought the Chick Habit EP and her 2002 album Triggers, which is a lot more electronic sounding.

I like both versions a lot. Fabienne Del Sol also did an excellent version (in French) on her No Time for Sorrows album, I recommend listening to it!
