I remember in an early interview with Kurt Cobain, he talked about how Shonen Knife was able to turn a cold audience to massive fans by the end of their set. In some ways, Cobain admit to being a little jealous of the power of Shonen Knife's music.
Since then, Shonen Knife had some minor hits with their '94 album, Rock Animals, with "Tomato Head", and "Brown Mushrooms" (which actually sounds like they're singing "musha-rooms"). KROQ, The Edge, and MTV's 120 Minutes were all playing those songs. It was a great year for them.
Of course, I tried to track down their early albums, with less than spectacular results. Most of their pre-Let's Knife albums were only available in Japan, and import cost was out of the question.... although one day I did find 712 in the clearance bin at Amoeba Records, which made me quite happy.
So, I will attempt to explain why Shonen Knife is one of my favorite bands: they are adorable (like so many things from Japan), they sound like the Ramones (but with broken Engrish), and they seem to really enjoy food (most of their songs are about food). If that doesn't grab you, I know what what else I can tell you.
I'll be perfectly honest with you that I have not kept up with Shonen Knife since Happy Hour ("Banana Chips" is awesome!), and be sure to track down the US version of Brand New Knife which comes with bonus Japanese tracks (they had re-recorded all their songs in English for us!).
So last year, the band released Super Group and announced their new bassist Ritsuko Taneda, who stepped in to replace drummer-turned-bassist Atsuko Yamano (who was married and moved to Los Angeles).
See the cute/clumsy/shy announcement of the new bassist:
There is one cover song on the album, "Jet", originally from Paul McCartney's Wings' album, Band on the Run. Shonen Knife's version brought a much-needed pop-punk sound to the song.
Some songs sounds too metal for me ("Muddy Bubble Hell"), but catchy songs like "Evil Birds" will more than make up for the heavier songs. I don't know why Naoko Yamano is afraid of birds, but apparently she's afraid of the evil ones. Too cute.
There are no tours announcement yet, but I reckon they won't be far behind when the album is officially released in the US. If they are going out on tour, for sure, I'll be there. So be on the lookout for Super Group in late August. In the meantime, I would suggest checking out Rock Animals and Brand New Knife to tie you over.

Since the album isn't available to order until sometime in June (with a touring promotion in August/September), I've decided to put this on hold until then. Think of this song as a teaser to my review.
What I will add is that whoever is designing these artwork by Nik Ayres has a great eye for design. Also note: these silk-screening albums are very limited - and they are very reasonably priced. For instance, Friends and Friends of Friends Compilation Volume 2 costs only $8 (with free digital downloads) comes with two discs with forty-three songs! It's a great sampler if you just want to check out some Portland (and not-so-Portland) bands.
Just got your tax refund ? Consider their $49 special of everything TLE of 6 albums, 1 comic and 1 t-shirt.

cagetheelephant.com ♥ myspace.com ♥ twitter For a band with its lead singer Matt Shultz sounding "really British", the band is actually from Bowling Green, Kentucky. This confused me a bit, since this is a relatively new band for me, I don't really know much about the band (apart from that Matt & Brad Shultz are real life brothers). Reading all the hype about the band: everyone in the UK loves them. And it's easy to see why: this is a really good album. Really good. I played the album from start to finish, then again, and again... It occurred to me that I haven't really listened to a good British album in a long time, and although the band is US-based, their sound is more like later-Britpop. Lots of youth energy and fun, but the song-writing is first-rate. Matt's vocals comes in clear on the self-titled debut album, the music is raw - which I think they are holding in a lot of back in the studio. I feel like this band need to explode on stage. By all accounts, people are saying this is a fantastic live band. I haven't seen them, they are currently doing UK dates throughout the Summer, but I'm sure they'll be back in the States before long. And I'm definitely going to try and catch them when they come through town. From their defiant "In One Ear", telling us how it is: "They say I'm just a stupid kid, another crazy radical. Rock and roll is dead, I probably should have stayed in school. Another Generation X, who somehow slipped up through the cracks, Oh they'd love to see me fall. But I'm already on my back". I feel it's more directed towards "critics" who dismissed them. Their most popular song, as of this writing, is "Ain't No Rest for the Wicked", a song about the time Matt got mugged by a drug dealer, and another time when he picked up a young female hitch-hiker, only to find out that she's a prostitute. The common denominator in all these cases in the song is that "money don't grow on trees" Cage The Elephant's self-titled debut album is available via Relentless Records. You should definitely want to check out their cover of the classic The Stooges' "I Wanna Be Your Dog", this is a free download. |

myspace.com/deathsentencepanda ♥ blogspot.com Death Sentence: Panda! are a freaking strange group from San Francisco, California and... AND I THINK I'M IN LOVE LOVE THEM! Think of an Asian girl screaming and really insane psychedelic noise-rock, and you get Death Sentence: Panda! This lively trio consists of Kim West, Paul Costuros, and Chris Dixon. I thought it's interesting to note that their music theory is based on trying to incorporate traditional Chinese and Korean folk music with marching band, hardcore punk, and even pop music. So mixing the genres up and you pretty much get what Death Sentence is all about. Initially, I thought they reminded a bit of Aids Wolf, which I heart because of their sheer energy - but only less head trauma. Their latest album is called Insects Awaken, our earlier in January on Upset the Rhythm. Although the band described the album as epic, it's possibly only epic in their head - the whole album is about 30 minutes (with 10 minutes of silence as to hide the hidden track "Insects Awaken"). Let's talk about the song "Insects Awaken", which the album is named after, this sounds like it was sung in Chinese (?) It's their most epic song, from the lyrics at the beginning to the constant drumming in the mid-section to its warpy/strange/space-like sound at the end. This song has everything! And speaking of lyrics, they seem barely coherent, sung usually to the rhythm of their music... a collection of flutes, bells, xylophone, and hollow percussions. Songs worth checking out "New China Blazer", "Exit Villager", and "No Enemies". If you like DIY, noise, art-rock, riot grrrl, I definitely recommend checking out Death Sentence: Panda! I think the hardest part is just getting past the band's name, but once you've gone through the door, I think you'll really appreciate this. You can pick up Insects Awaken, as well as their previous releases on Upset the Rhythm |

myspace.com/wethemeans ♥ powerrecordings.com I honestly don't know much about this band, Cool Devices - save for the fact that the group used to be called The Means (as evident by "we the means" myspace url). It's kind of fuzzy, but I think The Means (or at least some other band that he formed) might have reformed without the consent of brainchild Jason Frederick, who got understandably a little upset about the whole thing. To "retaliate", Frederick grabbed a hold of old friend Jim Duffy (who drummed with Frederick's previous band Love Story in Blood Red) and formed Cool Devices. So, originally they had only scheduled one day for recording at the Electrical Audio in Chicago (this is Steve "I made millions off Nirvana" Albini's famous studio). They soon realized that one day wasn't enough time to finish their project, and since studio time is rare and costly, they moved their second date to Semaphore Recording studio. The result is a rockingly loud recording of spontaneous studio sessions. It was put together very quickly and down to the odd choice of cover artwork of an albino deer. I suppose they are conveying the message that they are a rare and strange breed? Most of their records are available as free downloads, so if you're at all interested, you should definitely check it out. Currently, you can get Cool Device's EP via their associated online distributor, Rock Proper at rockproper.com. You'll see that they are about 16 albums for download for free. All the music are with legal consent and they encourage people to share it - so spread the word! So, the 7-track debut Cool Devices EP is mostly garagey rock n' roll. It is surprisingly easy to listen to and seems to end too quickly! I remember my favorite song is "Come Get Me" because it takes a good 50 seconds before Frederick starts singing. Once he starts singing, you can hear how passionately vengeful he gets as he sings, "Why don't you waste away? I can spend my lifetime forgetting every word that you said". They are playing at Beat Kitchen in Chicago on May 28th, go ahead and download their whole EP from either their record label, Power Recordings or Rock Proper. |

beastsound.net ♥ myspace.com Beast are a Canadian (by the way of Montreal) electronic duo, lyricists/singer Betty Bonifassi and music composer Jean-Phi Goncalves. What's kind of interesting to note is that both people are from France, but settled in French-speaking Quebec in the music community for over twenty years now. They first met in 2006 when they teamed up to write music for a video game for Ubisoft. I reckon that's the origin of Beast, where they were called that or not at the time. So, I wanted to check out the band when I was at SXSW09, but they proved too popular. You see, if I have to stand in line to see a band, I'm just not going to do, especially when there are 3,000 other bands at SXSW! The reason why I wanted to see them was to see what the hype was all about, as listening to their album in early March, that they sound to me like a bit of Portishead, like trip-hop, only with this gorgeous, sassy diva vocals from Bonifassi with this down-tempo electronica and beats. So, if you're into trip hop, Beast should definitely be on your radar. Again, as I have mentioned in the past, I like it when bands try and create that album atmosphere, and we have that with the self-titled album. I don't understand why anyone would pay $0.99 for a 12 seconds "Interlude" song, as this only makes sense when it's purchased as a whole album. And I do appreciate those breaks (the interludes) in the album. If I were to choose a theme song for Beast, it would have to be "Mr. Hurricane" - where the song keeps referring back to "don't mess with the Beast, Mr Hurricane". The term 'the Beast', for the non-religious is a reference to Satan (as heard on their closer track of the same name.) Most of the songs on the album is closer to rap/spoken word (which fits well with the electronic beats), but whenever Bonifassi sings, it feels very old-world Jazz clashing with modern electronica. I also really enjoy whenever singer/rapper Simon Wilcox seemingly randomly shows up ("Ashtray", "Dark Eyes"). Beast's self-titled is available from Verve Records |

Apologies to any bands that's been waiting for me to write about them. I get daily submissions, so please be patience, I will eventually get around to everything... However if you supply all the right tools for me, it might help you get elevated up the queue.
What I'm looking for: if your band is going on tour or is releasing music and the article needs to be time-sensitive.
Beyond that, my next step is if you mail me something as I consider the cost and time spent on actually mailing me something. All mail will be reviewed within a three months window, and again, apologies if I missed any deadlines.
The other type of submissions I get are digital ones. So in an effort to clear out any emails in my inbox, I've rounded up a few submissions that I thought were interesting.
Since most of these bands haven't been around to have a more established history (and most importantly that I'm only exposed to one or two songs) don't expect a very detail writeup.
First band up: Alberteen (www.myspace.com/alberteenmusic).
Formed in 2006 in the UK, they seem to be huge music fans as their singer, Phil Shaw has a forthcoming book, Horses on Patti Smith under the 33⅓ series.
I liked the
song they sent me to use, although I think there's a few other songs on
their 'space. I don't know, it just felt very 80s, like The Church or
Talking Heads. Also, is he singing in Italian or French Spanish somewhere in
the song?
Good news is they have a few dates if you live near these area:
02/14/08 The Criterion Leicester
03/06/08 The Miller, London Bridge SE1 London, London and South East
In keeping with the England-thing, Plans & Apologies (www.plansandapologies.com) sent over "Meetoo", which I quite like.
They seem to be really young with a good sense of humor - especially with their song "Mel Gibson's... IRAQ!". This second song is actually a double-A-Side, and is made available in 2007 from Pandaz Pop and Exercise1.
I don't know the format they released it, but I think it might only be sold as a 7".
The best line in the song, and the one that caught my ear is:
You've been around for twenty-five years, been sad for seventeen.
Also, there's something about that young English accent that I like. If you like the singer from the Kooks, you'll like Plans & Apologies.
Witness (myspace.com/witness) is hip-hop artist, based out of Morrisville, Pennsylvania.
I did noticed that he has a rap song about Sylvia Plath, which was not on the EP that was submitted. I tried downloading the song off myspace, but without luck. I think Tom hates me.
Instead, I'm going to force to use the first track off his The Evermore EP. It starts off with violins and acoustic and even has a woman singing at the intro. The rapping sort of reminds me of a less-dancey Stereo MC's.
I see that he's playing with a bunch of people at The Rotunda in Philly:
03/07/08 The Rotunda w/ Reef The Lost Cauze, MC Squared, Unsung, Others TBA Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
Let's see who else we have here? How about Beast From Sea (myspace.com/beastfromsea)? Aren't they missing a "the" in there somewhere in their name?
So, I was expecting them to sound really loud and punk, but the songs that were submitted were pretty mellow. Kind of like something that would play on a WB show.
Since I believe they are constantly discovering where their music is heading and I am assuming they would want me to use their latest song: "Advance", the current (and only) song on their myspace.
This song is a little peppier.
It looks like they're also on tour, so check them out if you live in Illinois:
02/29/08 Mt. Zion High School Mt. Zion, Illinois
03/01/08 NV Ultra Lounge (All Ages) Normal, Illinois
03/15/08 Recording at Chicago Recording Company Chi town, Illinois
Last on my list is Penny Broadhurst (pennybroadhurst.com). They actually didn't contact me, but I just wanted to talk about them because I really dig that librarian look the singer has going for her. I half expect her to have a tattoo of a book with angel wings, I don't know.
They are also on a long tour, so I was hoping people would take a chance on them at a live show. See all their tour dates on their myspace.
It is also a place where you can check out some of their songs.
I like songs like "Give it Up" (it sounds like a synthy-motown number) and "LJaded" (it's like a pseudo "rap" song about Live Journal). Some great DIY sound and I officially predict Penny Broadhurst will be a household name by 2009, if not sooner.
And that's it for now.
Note: If you decide to submit digital songs for me to review, please email me (see below) and include the following:
A cover artwork (if none is available, send a photograph of your band), and a brief biography. If you're just starting out, perhaps just tell me where you're from and what genre of music you guys are influenced by (that's really all that I'm looking for in a biography anyway).

Sounds Like
Feels Like
The summer before my senior year of high school |
Sam Isaac writes love songs. Or so he says in his song "A Cinematic Glow". Sam Isaac is 20 and ginger and that's pretty much all I need to know. Sam is also a busy little bee, with 4 releases in the year 2007 alone and they're quality - at least from my standpoint. His 4,000 + friends on his MySpace page would say the same.
Sam is very much a diy operation. According to his website he and his friends make artwork, record and the like. The "Sideways" single is being released by Alcopop! Records and Big Scary Monsters and it's gathering steam quite quickly. Most of said steam has to be from what is the coolest video I've seen in a long time for "Sideways". Video and cake - what could be better?
Like most young singer-songwriters, Sam wears his heart on his sleeve and his voice is big, honest and able to accurately convey what being young and in love is like. I'd love to see his live show, but it doesn't look like he's coming anywhere Stateside anytime soon. His "Sideways" Single is available for purchase from the iTunes music store in the UK and US which has the song "Sideways" and "Cinematic Glow".
My favorite song is one called "Berlin" which is unreleased, but is sweet and beautiful and made an instant fan out of me.
Check out the following links and video and support my new favorite ginger singer-songwriter and if you're in the UK try to see him live. Some shows on his myspace page are listed as free. Well done Sam!

Okay, first of all - I absolutely love the cover art to Golden Fuzz!
Beatrix*JAR (Bianca Pettis and Jacob Roske) are a performance / electronic / experimental / noise / sound-art / DIY duo, from Minneapolis, Minnesota.
They have a sophomore album coming out on November 30th, but I'm almost certain you can pick up the album from any of their shows.
It all started a few years ago when Jacob discovered circuit-bending, which is a technique of altering the circuits of electronic devices (such as children's keyboard toys) to create new and unintentional sound. What this really means is that as a band, they are not equipped with traditional instruments such as guitars or drums - but rely on their circuit samples equipments. Check out a photograph of some of their setup.
I do like experimental noise, but you get so much more by watching the actual performance of producing those sound vs just hearing it coming out of the stereo - so to get the full effect, I suggest you check them out live if possible.
The tracks I did like off of Golden Fuzz is "Arthur Golden" (you can download the track off myspace). I suspect the author of "Memoirs of a Geisha" inspired the naming of their track "Golden Fuzz" as well as the album title.
"Open Lava Entropy" opens up the album, and what I liked about this track is that you hear Beatrix and JAR's vocals on this song. The other track that really represented their sound is probably "123 Beatrix-Jar", which features some great samples. It is the song that I've chosen for this review.
By the way,
one thing that I've noticed is that there is a semi-hidden DIY
photo/art thing if you decide to take apart your CD jewel case. On the
back of the piece of art is a link to bagaday.blogspot.com, which is Beatrix's JAR's bag blog. I'm actually impressed that he makes a bag a day.
Here's a video of them appearing on WSEE discussing their music and what they are about.
Anyway, be sure to catch the duo on November 29th at The Walker Art Center. Their new album is called Golden Fuzz and their official CD Release Party is at the Kitty Cat Club on November 30th.
EDIT: Thanks halestorm for noticing my error on the bag blog.

There's a lot of buzz behind Atlanta's DIY punk band, The Coathangers. They've only been around since July 2006 (!), but have made quite an impression in such a short time. They recently released their full length album yesterday (Sep 4th) on Rob's House Records label, so they might be coming to your town on their promotional tour. I've included their tour dates, so check them out and let me know how they were live - as they are going nowhere near me. I can only imagine these girls will have a pretty good time on stage.
I quickly became interested in them because of their constant comparison to Bikini Kill, the Slits, and other Riot Grrl-type bands (as you know I've been a long-time fan of this genre of music[W♥M])
Although the punk-sound is true on their debut album, I was kind of surprise to hear a Russian song called "Missing Letter", which is quite good. The song is about singer, Julia Kugel's grandmother.
In an interview for Stomp and Stammer Magazine, Kugel said:
"When I wrote the lyrics, I didn't want them to sound like a seven-year-old wrote them. I only got the education of a seven-year-old in Russia, so I didn't want them to sound trite. But this Russian friend of a friend was like, ‘Oh, the lyrics are really good!’ So that made me feel proud."
If you were wondering about the accordion in the song, it was purchased by Candice Jones for $10 at a Texas gas station.
The other song I've picked out for you is "Nestle in my Boobies", which reminds me of another band that I liked called Gravy Train!!!![W♥M] You can download this song, as well as others on their myspace.

In answer to Cock Rock and Wizard Rock, comes: Riot Grrrl!
Let's be clear about this, this is not a definitive guide to all things Riot Grrrl, but just some selections of music that I have and liked.
I've always been fond of this music genre, which started in the early 90s through music and fanzines. The origin of the name seems to have come from Jen Smith (Bratmobile) writing a letter to Allison Wolfe about how the Summer of 1991 was going "to be a girl riot." Soon afterwards, Wolfe, Kathleen Hanna and Tobi Vail were inspired to create a fanzine called Riot Grrrl.
The explosion of Riot Grrrl music and political and social message leaked into the mass media. Soon, there was a backlash of Grrrl being "anti-men". Imagine that! By 1994-1995, there were hundreds of bands in this genre. Although Riot Grrrl still exists to this day, it's not that prevalent (at least in music).
Here are some Riots I like:
|
BIKINI KILL
The first song I heard from them is "New Radio", so I got into them late in the game. But it was the most amazingly different song I've ever heard. I didn't have a record player for the longest time, so I'm glad they compiled all the 7" into Singles on CD in 1998 (by which time they had broke up). |
|
BRATMOBILE
I picked up Ladies, Women and Girls (2000) immediately and discovered that after a seven years gap, that they sound EXACTLY the same! There's something very comforting in that. Trivia: I think one of the girl dated Graham Coxon, so they did a medley of "There's No Other Way" and "No You Don't" on John Peel's radio show. |
|
TEAM DRESCH
They broke up, but reformed in 2004 for some shows. |
|
THE SMEARS
Their album Love is Fer Suckers (1994) is fantastic. I believe they named their album off a Twisted Sisters song! They sound like a girls version of the Ramones! |
|
EXCUSE 17
Carrie Brownstein went on to join this band called Sleater-Kinney. |
|
HUGGY BEAR
If you're looking for more sound like "No Sleep" off of Taking the Rough with the Smooch (1993), then don't get Weaponry (unless you like Punk music, it's a pretty good punk album). Trivia: Nude Records wanted to sign these guys really badly. Huggy Bear said they'd only sign if Nude drop Suede. Suede was Nude's biggest money-making band, so of course there was no deal. |
|
CHIA PET
|
Before you mention that I am missing certain bands, that is because I don't have their albums. I know regrettably I don't really have any Babes in Toyland or Lunachicks. Although I do have cover songs they both did, which may surface on cover lover. Here's Lunachicks' Heart of Glass and watch for a Carpenters cover by Babes in Toyland.

It looks like it's mediaChick's birthday today. If I was your DJ, I would put this song: Chicks on Speed's "We Don't Play Guitar".
This is another fun and catchy song. The main chorus is "We don't play guitar, we're on stage with a microphone but we don't play guitar! Can you play guitar? I said, we don't play guitar!"
After about one minute, you'll come to the conclusion that Chicks on Speed doesn't play guitar.
You might be surprise to find out that their origin lies in meeting in Munich, Germany, at the Academy of Fine Arts. It seems that they are all art and fashion students. They got their name from passerbys who was looking at their artwork, commenting that the art looks like they were done by "chicks on speed".
And you know what? Their DIY official website looks like they were designed by chicks on speed as well. It's possibly even uglier than myspace! If you don't believe me, go there and look at the bright pink, yellow, blue and try reading their news: IN ALL CAPS! Unbelievable, I think I'm blind now.
Anyway, this is a pretty awesome fun song. You can find out more details about this single on their website as well as download Sell Out from Labels (German).
