The turnout was really good, mostly underage kids.... so the three bartenders were really lonely. The young photographers were out in droves as well... capturing every movement made by Copeland. Seriously photographers, take it easy.
Anyway, of course I got there late, caught a bit of Nashville's Brooke Waggoner (official/myspace) on stage with her women band of strings and cellos. Most of the songs toward the end was mostly Waggoner and her keyboard... I did end up downloading her free 2007 EP called Fresh Pair of Eyes if you sign up for her mailing list.
Seattle's This Providence (official/myspace) (formerly known as Sunday Best) did their high energy rock set, I had a feeling I would like them when lead singer Dan Young did Oasis' "Don't Look Back in Anger" song during their brief soundcheck. They did a lot of songs from their new 2009 album Who Are You Now?, such as: "Sure as Hell", "Letdown", "That Girl's a Trick", "Keeping on Without You".
Florida's Copeland (official/myspace) started off their set badly (sorry I'm not familiar with the band enough to tell you what song they started, but it was two keyboard-driven songs). Singer Aaron Marsh started singing the first song again on their second song. He realized this right away and pulled the song to a halt and made it an inside joke about time travel and ABC's "Lost" or something. I think he was really embarrassed about it and claimed that he was "really drunk". (I think he was kidding though).

Paper Route at the Varsity Theater, Minneapolis (04/11/09) |
Although I'm complaining, listening to their latest EP Are We All Forgotten (you can hear the entire EP on their official website ), they are sort of going for that distorted vocals-kind of thing.
Already hailed by Filter, Daytrotter, and Paste, as a band to watch out for, they certainly must be excited to launch their second album Absence on April 28th. I ran into Greg (I've been running into a lot of local bloggers lately - it's weird because I never recognize anyone), who seems very excited about Absence and complains that no one is talking about the album. Well if you pre-order now you get one downloadable song, "Carousel" and a 7-minute documentary tomorrow (April 13th). Plus buttons.

That very next day, well that's today. In honor of the day after Christmas, Cover Lover presents: "Last Christmas"!
Wham!'s "Last Christmas" song is possibly one of the best Christmas pop song. Released in 1984, it dominated the charts and is still very popular even today (especially in Japan and Southeast Asia). Re-issues after re-issues, song is one of the best-selling single in UK chart history.
All that success lead the music publisher Dick James Music, to sue George Michael for plagiarism for the song "Can't Smile Without You". If you listen to the song by The Carpenters from their 1976 album, A Kind of Hush, it does bear a heavy resemblance - and eventually the matter was settled out of court.
Anyway, here are some more covers:

CRAZY FROG
www.jamba.de As much as I admire and love British culture, I could not understand their love for that Crazy Frog (Europe's love for the Crazy Frog sent him to #1 in the charts - simply by selling ring tones!) If you've never heard of Crazy Frog, it sounds to me that they just remix music by other people and through the brilliant marketing of an animated frog. Thankfully the craze never made it over to the States, and if it does, I'll bet you that Americans will complain about the Frog's penis. If you were wondering about the woman singing on Crazy Frog's housey "Last Christmas", it is by singer Nicole Bolley. |
ASHLEY TISDALE
ashleytisdale.com ♥ ashleymusic.com Like many other modern girl pop singers, Ashley Tisdale came out of the Disney school of music... or better known as High School Musical. Hate it or not, it's hard to ignore the impact of HSM on popular culture. In 2006, Tisdale decided to release her studio recording of "Last Christmas" for Warner Brothers Music. The song was eventually released only as a one-track radio promo, and only available as a digital download. However, if physical CD is your thing, you'll find the song as a B-Side on her He Said She Said EP. If you get a chance to listen to the sort-of-whiney version of "Last Christmas", it doesn't really add much to the song. It's definitely more modern and pop. |

I'M SO LOOK YOU
myspace.com ♥ imsolookyou.blogspot.com I'm So Look You is from Japan, I think mostly driven by DJ Muranao. I couldn't make any sense of her myspace or blogspot, as it's mostly written in Japanese, so I can't really tell you much about her. She seems like a young woman with a talent for mixing. Anyway, she recently remixed "Last Christmas", adding a little jingle bells, "Joy to the World", violas, synth, and techno beats to the original song. The vocals are modified enough that you might not recognize that it's George Michaels. She'll be DJing in the Nagoya area, check it out:

HILARY DUFF
hilaryduff.com ♥ myspace.com Hilary Duff is probably best known as Lizzie McGuire (yet another Disney child star). She ventured into music obviously, and from her first real studio album is actually a holiday album called Santa Claus Lane, released in 2002. The title is a fictional street, as originally referenced in the 1947 song "Here Comes Santa Claus" and probably inspired the poppy "Santa Claus Lane" song on the album. No surprise, but I don't think Duff wrote any of the songs on the album, they were either written for her or established songs. Some of the covers I did recognize is Paul McCarthy's "" and Wham's "Last Christmas". Incidentally, the "chicawah" sound effects on "Last Christmas" made Duff's version very cheesy. The quirky effects are also applied to other songs on her album. Someone should've stopped the mixer/producer from over doing it. |

BILLIE
billie-piper.net (unofficial) Billie Paul Piper or better known simply as "Billie" is a British singer and actress. Unlike her teen pop contemporaries, she's not of the Disney music school. However, they're all pretty much interchangeable, aren't they? She dabbled in music, but have only managed to released two albums (strangely securing a "Greatest Hits" album based on the two previous studio albums) and seems to have taken more into acting. Currently, she's better known for playing Rose Tyler next to the Doctor in the television series Doctor Who (2005 to 2006), where she's won numerous awards for "Best Actress" to GQ's "Woman of the Year". |
DAM VINH HUNG
damvinhhung.ws ♥ myspace.com Dam Vinh Hung is a pop singer from Vietnam. It must be hard to be a singer or actor in Vietnam because the state of things in the region is that everything is bootlegged and you can forget about money and royalties from legitimate sales of your records or DVDs. It's gotten to a point that people prefer the bootlegs due to the attractive dirt cheap prices. Anyway, the cover song is sung entirely in Vietnamese and contain the opening dialogue. The Glasvegas article was supposed to be a short snippet in Part Two of my Christmas articles, but as I started listening to it and writing and realized this was a group that deserved to be in its own article... well you get the idea. So technically this is the second and possibly final Christmas post from me for this year. And if I don't say it, it's implied that you have a wonderful Christmas. Keep warm!
By the way, for those wondering about a "Top Ten" type list, that's being compiled for January 2009!
So below are some old and some new Christmas-type songs.
WOULD-BE-GOODS
connectedup.com/would-be-goods ♥ myspace.com
As you know, I am a huge Would-Be-Goods fan, particularly because I find Jessica Griffin's storytelling songs very compelling. Plus, I am a sucker for her oh-so-British accent.
They quietly released their latest album, Eventyr (which means fairytale), late October and I haven't really seen much promotion on it. I've placed my order on Matinee at a reasonably price of $10, so I am hoping to have reviewed in 2009 as I clear out what's left of 2008.
Well anyway! They have this wonderful, fun Christmas song on their 1993 album, Mondo, called "Christmas In Haiti". Listen to Griffin's dilemma as she describe to you a Christmas in the tropics, complete with voodoo chicken and a cockroach in her beer.
As I listen to other songs off Mondo, like my all-time-favorite "Black Pearls Of Polynesia", "Lisbon Beat" and "La Fonda Del Sol"... wow I can't wait to hear Eventyr.
LAST NOVEMBER
lastnovember.com ♥ myspace.com
I previously mentioned Last November on W♥M last year, and since then I have their second album, Over the Top or Under the Weather. The album is pretty much alt-rock, so if you enjoy Story of the Year or the Midway State, you'll like this. They do utilize lots of reverb, strange loops, and echo effects, making it consisting interesting. Most of the song on the album is pretty upbeat.
My favorite song on the album is "Uppers, Downers, & All-Arounders", which is an all-out-sing-along stompering song.
Their Christmas song on the album is called "Merry Christmas Little Match Girl", a mellow and depressing song, one of the few. I should mention that toward the end, it does start to pick up a bit, giving a little hope.
Hey, guess what? They are doing a few dates:

Britt Nicole is a Christian singer, probably better known over in Europe, despite being from Nashville. Her songs even sport a weird-British-style singing, combined with hip-hoppy pop-rap. Check out tunes like "Holiday" and "Say It" from her 2007 album, Say It. Fans of Lily Allen should want to check her out.
Anyway, regarding Christmas, she covered George Michael's "Last Christmas" on the same album. Almost all the popstars have covered this song, and this version is pretty faithful with little deviation from the original song.
Well, it looks like Nicole is busy working on her next album, due out in 2009. She loves her fans, apparently you can just call her number 615-823-7325 to leave a message for her.

Anyway, back to music: Switchfoot's first ever greatest hits album, The Best Yet. Although I have only heard of the band's name, I wasn't sure I have actually heard their music before. And for some reason, I thought they are a semi-recent Christian band - yet, surprisingly, I found out that the band's been around for ages and have rejected the idea of "Christian music" as a genre.
Originally called Chin Up, they changed their name Switchfoot (a surfing term) and signed to Re:think Records (which was shortly bought out by Christian music label Sparrow Record).
I never did see "A Walk to Remember", which apparently was where they first gained attention of fans - shifting over 2.6 million copies of their debut major label record, The Beautiful Letdown, for which they are probably most known for their big hits "Meant to Live" and "Dare You to Move".
Since then, the band have won numerous awards, including Top 50 list of Most Performed Song of 2005 for "Dare You to Move" - which incidentally is the first song on the album. What's important to note here is that it's an award by ASCAP (The American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers), these are the people that pay royalties to the musician whenever their songs are played on the airwaves - which also means that "Dare You to Move" was on really heavy rotation in 2005.
Listening to the album earlier today, I would have to say it has that searching/angst alternative rock sound to it... with the exception of the "Only Hope" song, which I quite like. This has a medieval feel to it with a softer sound and some strings and piano.
Speaking of which, one interesting thing to note is that the release does include "This Is Home" which originally appeared on the soundtrack to The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian. I suppose this was a recent hit for them, since the movie was only out this Summer.
As with most best of compilations, I feel they are really design for for casual/new fans, but hardcore fans might want want to check out official website as they are offering a Special Holiday Package. This package contains a Deluxe Edition (CD and DVD of 14 music videos with band commentaries), plus either a T-Shirt or Hoodie (this costs extra), a Christmas Card (signed by the band), and downloadable B-Sides and solo Jon Foreman live performances.
The Best Yet was released Tuesday, November 4th at all major retailers, courtesy of Sony/BMG. Bargain hunters might want to check out BMG Music Club, which undoubtedly the album will be made available 6 or 12 months from now at a discount.
Here are a few non-indie rock album reviews for you. One of the nicest thing about W♥M is that we don't necessary serve a niche music genre, so we're often sent a huge variety of music genre. Below are some genre of music that I don't normally listen to - but all equally enjoyable: oldies, reggae, death metal, and Christian.
By the way, someone should do an article called "putting the pot in potpourri" and have a series of, er, grassy music.

OPM
opmden.com ♥ myspace.com
California's OPM's Golden State of Mind was released in August, and features a diverse collaborations with Jim Perkins (acoustic folk), Pato Banton (reggae), Big B (rap/hip hop) and Jamie Allensworth (soul/funk). This album is mostly chill reggae, but with a small splash of rap - mostly through collaboration with Big B & Dirtball. This is also radio-reggae, so if you're looking for reggae dubs, you might want to look elsewhere - however fans of reggae should really enjoy the mix of rock, rap, reggae (and even punk!). This band first exploded on the reggae scene with their major label (Atlantic) debut 2000 album, Menace To Sobriety, mostly due to their popular skater song, "Heaven Is a Halfpipe". They left Atlantic and have been with Suburban Noize Records since 2004. The one clear song that I think is such a good song is "Family & Friends". There are two mixes on this album, the Saber mix seems to stress certain music riffs/beats, but the original mix I thought was just fine - if not better as is. I think mostly because you can hear the vocals more clearly on the original mix. It looks like they've been touring all summer long, and continuing:

STEPHANIE
iamstephanie.net ♥ myspace.com
You probably
don't know this, but I often get interested potential writers with
interesting proposals for music angles. One of them included someone
who wanted to write about Christian music, so I requested some of this
genre of music from our PR people. When it came to actually producing
reviews, that person was never heard from again. I haven't gotten a Christian album in a while, but this one recently turned up: the self-titled album by the artist simply known as "Stephanie". Surely she must know that she's not the only musician called Stephanie? I had a heck of a hard time looking up her myspace/website. With the exception of the live recording of "Wake up Arise", all of these songs are studio-recorded and mixed. It sounds very clear and professional - including the live song. The closest "rock" song is the ironically named "Back to the Rock", featuring pianos and Céline Dion-style singing and wooing. I did enjoy her songs when it had more than a few instrument arrangement, like "The Rain", "Through Christ" (electric guitar!), and "Back to the Rock", as they seem to bring more of a full-music experience for me - at least for this album. I can understand the route to keep it simple (either with just pianos or acoustic guitar), because I felt they were trying to spotlight Stephanie's vocals. If you like vocals and minimal music, songs to check out are "Now I Know", "Bless Those Beside Me", and "Take Away". The overall feel of this album is that it's Christian pop music, at times inspirational. If you enjoy other Christian pop acts like Amy Grant, this should fit right in. After a few listen, you forget that it's even Christian, despite the obvious religious overtones. If you're in the Texas area and just generally like pop music, you should check her out:

THE PONSONBY DC'S
myspace.com/ponsonbydcs
This band doesn't have anything to do with death, sans for their gloomy "Death Doom and Destruction". This song is actually pretty good, sampling some speech from George Bush. This band have been around since 1984 (WTF!) and currently based out of Canterbury, New Zealand, according to their myspace. By 1986, this band was in top form with their self-titled album featured in Spin Magazine and all over the college radio airwaves. Their third and latest album is called That's What All The Girls Say, released this year. Just look at their cover art, featuring what looks like a "serious" Cubism style - yet showing a pop-art style of a boat captain to the right. Maybe I'm over analyzing it, but this has a very serious and a not-so-serious tone to it. This also reflects in their songs, some songs have modern social commentaries to them, like the "Death" song mentioned above to "Pluto's Not A Planet Anymore". Other songs ("Son of a Street Fighting Man", "Girls!") are just fun. Other trends I notice from this band is that they have a late 50s "oldies but goodies" feel to them. Check out "Little Baby You're Mine" and "Ponsonby Waltz", both are well worth a look if you love classic oldies songs - done by a modern band. PS, Gavin Buxton's NZ accent definitely shows up on "Just Another Kick" and "Son of a Street Fighting Man". I love it! |
NETHERBIRD
netherbird.com ♥ myspace.com
Since we already mentioned the life-inspiration songs of Stephanie, I thought it would be fun to balance it with a little bit of the Dark Side. Usually I reserve this sort of music for Dr Soup, as this is a death (read: Satan) metal band from Sweden. I was actually pretty impressed with the production on The Bone Collector, it doesn't sound too "cookie monster" but it's clear that their inspiration lies in death metal. Even though I think some of their songs sounds like operatic metal (especially on "Carcess Symphony"). I thought "Forever Mournful" was the stand-out track on this album - and I'll tell you why. You have Nephente's demonic/agonizing vocals (I'm not even sure what he's saying!!) with a counterpoint of a sweet, angelic voice (no idea who's singing as the promo copy I have doesn't have any liner notes). The song lends itself to an epic feel as its theme seem to flow right into "Adrift Towards Eternity" (with its sweet violins and thunderstorm soundclip). Speaking of epic, check out "Boulevard Black" - the very first song that Netherbird recorded. This is a fourteen minute, utilizing lots of guitar, bird sounds (crows?), pianos, and includes a semi-cheesy voice over that seems to sound like an old 80s horror movie. Even the reprise song have a feel of Phantom of the Opera with The Texas Chainsaw Massacre! The most surprising thing I found out is that Target.com is carrying their CD. Wow, right? Apparently there is a standard release and a collector's edition - as usual, I always suggest getting the deluxe version if you can swing it. |

I think I've just had one of the best day. Ever.
First of all, my tax return came early (and I know that I'm also getting that stimulus check anytime now...) so I've been pretty fit as far as having some extra cash on hand.
With that in mind, I decided to splash out a little and dine out whenever I felt like it. So, sure, let's do breakfast drive-through at McDonald's. When I pulled up to the pay window, I was told to put away my money!
The man behind the window gave me this letter instead:
Apparently, this was a promotional thing for KTIS Radio, which, as it turns out, is a Christian radio station.
Speaking of letter, I got another letter in the mail when I got home. The letter was from Best Buy, sending me a $50 gift card for my poor choice in the high definition war by buying a HD Player addon for the Xbox 360.
I ended up using that money to buy some standard DVD :) (take that, expensive Bluray!)
I also picked up a few new CDs, including Goldfrapp's Seventh Tree, primarily for a decently priced ($17) deluxe package (includes extra DVD, handwritten lyric books, poster, postcards, etc). I am really impressed with the lyric book, it's not only handwritten, but there's random artwork by Alison. Who knew she's such a good artist?
The DVD is kind of disappointing, containing only a short documentary/interview and a video for A&E. Although, I have to say that Goldfrapp's always seem to really have an eye for good videos, and this one is no exception.

Continuing with the Christmas Songs series, here are a few free (downloadable) options.
Ryan sent this in, and I thought I'd pass this on. It's a free Christmas album from www.soundsfamilyre.com called A Familyre Christmas (Vol. 1).
They're putting on one song a day or something because currently there's only 11 songs available for download (but they promise two more).
See links for more information, here are an excerpt from the article:
We are very excited to share with you some of our favorite Christmas music performed by the Sounds Familyre Famile: new interpretations of traditional Christmas carols as well as original songs! A new song each day for thirteen days. Baker’s dozen. So make sure to come back tomorrow, and the next day, and the next day, and the day after that…
The track listing so far (eleven down, two to go!) is as follows:
1: ‘Christmas Eve Nite’ - Danielson
2: ‘For There Is Born A Child’ - Lenny Smith
3: ‘Plant A Little Fir Tree’ - Half-handed Cloud
4: ‘Dayspring From On High’ - Soul-Junk
5: ‘Pat-A-Pan’ - Leopulde
6: ‘In The Bleak Midwinter’ - Dan Zimmerman
7: ‘Lo, How A Rose E’er Blooming’ - The Singing Mechanic
8: ‘We Wish You A Merry Christmas’ - Sufjan Stevens*
9: ‘What Child Is This’ - Rachel
10: ‘I Wonder As I Wander’ - Woven Hand
11. ‘Christmas Is A Holiday’ - Ben + Vesper
There's a few songs off this free compilation that I like, but we'll go with this mysterious Rachel woman :) Looking at her blog, she seems to be very crafty.
Next up is Rafael Brom, a Catholic recording artist with over 8 albums under his belt.
The only songs I've listened from him are the free "The Christmas Songs" album, which is available on his website www.rafaelbrom.com. They were released in 1994 on Cassette, but they digitized it (and it doesn't sound that bad considering it's from a Cassette).
The big thing that struck me about these recording is that Brom doesn't sound American (he's currently living in League City, Texas, according to his myspace). I found out that he's actually Czechoslovakian.
Moving on, The Knife gave this MP3 song away called "Christmas Reindeer" last year. I don't think it's available on www.theknife.net anymore (but I'm sure you're resourceful enough to find a copy somewhere.)
The actual song is actually called "Reindeer", appearing on their self-titled debut album in 2001. I guess they just wanted to be a little festive and renamed the song.
So, speaking of Sweden (The Knife are from Sweden), we have some great Swedish music to talk about in the upcoming weeks, particularly from both Razzia and Labrador.
