Ceji here. Planning what I want to hit today at what's called the Music Fest. This is my first music festival ever. How do you plan when Aug 9, 2009 12:28 PM
There are so many bands to see? Aug 9, 2009 12:28 PM

Steve Poltz & the Rugburns, Buddy Akai, Writer and Presidents of the United States of America. All day! Plus closing bash at The Casbah Aug 9, 2009 12:32 PM

Avi Buffalo. Looks 12. Solo electric and he sounds amazing! On another note: funnel cake! Aug 9, 2009 2:40 PM
He reminds me a bit of Ben Gibbard but stronger vox. Gonna see if I can find his CD for you guys. Aug 9, 2009 2:46 PM
Ceji here. Technical difficulties! What's up with the power SDGE? Aug 9, 2009 2:52 PM
Ahhh, we're keeping it semi-local. Avi Buffalo is from the LBC Aug 9, 2009 2:59 PM

irRadio have brought people out of their houses to stand at the entrance gates to listen Aug 9, 2009 3:25 PM
Running to catch Steve Poltz for nostalgias sake. Why are these stages so far apart? I'm a fat kid! Aug 9, 2009 3:25 PM
Steve Poltz and the Rugburns are San Diego music stalwarts. I feel like as long as I've been alive, they've been around Aug 9, 2009 3:45 PM
Hey San Diegans, if you're out here at th music fest come find me! I'm the little black girl with piggies on her shirt! Aug 9, 2009 3:52 PM
Nice sized crowd! Hopefully I can still catch Dynamite Walls =\ Aug 9, 2009 3:57 PM
Ceji here. Only in San Diego will the words "El Cajon" and "Meth" get a laugh out of the crowd. Aug 9, 2009 3:59 PM
A suggestion for next year: a dedicated merch table. I'd love to support these artists but I can't find where to buy their cd's! Aug 9, 2009 4:10 PM
Thank God for hungover bands. Managed to run from Rugburns, grab grub and make it in time for their set Aug 9, 2009 4:14 PM
I feel like if these guys were on The O.C. they would be wicked popular. Dynamite Walls errbody! They're good, really catchy! Aug 9, 2009 4:17 PM
Just a reminded that the close out bash for the North Park Music Thing is TONIGHT at the Casbah. LIGHTS ON will be there! Aug 9, 2009 4:24 PM
Migrating over to catch El Vez...Dynamite Walls are still killing it! Power rock/pop? Big choruses whatever this last song was Aug 9, 2009 4:35 PM
If none of my shots come out, let this one. El Velz is wearing a red leather suit! http://yfrog.com/0t8rfaj Aug 9, 2009 4:42 PM
El Vez meets the Ting Tings! Aug 9, 2009 4:50 PM
Never has Chappelle's Show " White People Dancing" sketch been more appropriate Aug 9, 2009 4:58 PM
Third costume change. Denim catsuits! http://yfrog.com/0qsmsoj Aug 9, 2009 5:07 PM
Right, going to cool off and recharge. Next show that I scheduled to see isn't for 2 hours. AC here I come! Aug 9, 2009 5:30 PM
Ceji here. Pretty sure the hangover that I didn't think I had has been following me around all day. Good times at Bar Pink last night! Aug 9, 2009 6:10 PM
But I think that after Buddy Akai at 5:30, I'm gonna call it a day. Such is having a day job with a 4am wake up time. Aug 9, 2009 6:11 PM
Hey guys, so I think this festival update is gonna be cut short due to a dead car battery =\ WTF mate! Aug 9, 2009 6:29 PM

What's on my playlist is Eddie Murphy and Peter Murphy, because of that Tale of Two Murphys article I wrote earlier this week. I just find the Eddie Murphy song, "Party All The Time" to be too hiliarious for its own good. I mean, check out that cover of the single, it says "I'm hawt sh**!".
In the mid-80s, Murphy wanted a career in music, unfortunately it never quite happened for him.... but this single, written and produced by "I'm Rick James, b****" Rick James & Kevin Johnston, was a sure hit for the comic actor-turn musician.
Ryan will be the special guest for the colossal episode #50 of W♥M Radio, we're taping tomorrow, Saturday, and the show will be made available for download that Sunday - pending if I can sort it all out with the recording and editing software. We will be talking about the early days (yes, all six months ago...) as well as what's going with the state of music. Will be fascinating, tune in!
Ceji will be covering the San Diego "Music Thing", you can read about it on sandiegomusicfoundation.org, or news.weheartmusic.com, or if you happened to spot this post. You can hear Ceji talk about the secret origin of her name on W♥M039: Ceji.
The complete two-day schedule is available here.

Hey Everyone!
It's been a good 8 months or so since I've had the opportunity to write anything for WHM, so I'm super excited to start again. This weekend, San Diego's music scene is coming alive with the North Park Music Thing. Formally called "NXNP", the festival is in its second year in showcasing all that our local music scene has to offer. It's HUGE. 150+ performers, 20 stages, 2 days. It's hard for me to decide who/what I'll be seeing, but I plan on checking out Lights On, MC Flow, El Vez aaaaand....Presidents of the United States of America. Talk about a Jr. High flashback!
Tickets are still available through San Diego Music Foundation and at $25 for 2 days of good, local music I think that's a pretty decent price. I'm going to attempt moblogging directly to WHM, but if that doesn't work out then I'll just do a wrap up every evening.
Any San Diegans going? I hope to see you there!

This was a lot of fun. I had promised Ceji that it would not take more than 15 minutes of her time, but we ended up taking much longer than expected. Perhaps there will be an imminent part twoer.
I ended up taking out about 20 +/- minutes, to keep the podcast consistent. I felt that the iPhone talk didn't belong with the music-related theme, so added it as a bonus at the end of the podcast. So listen to the end for about 5 minutes of iPhone/iPod love.
Featured song of the podcast is Little Dragon's "Recommendation".
Taking a break from her moving day, I present to you:
CEJI

Among some of the more interesting thing on our chat is that Ceji was named after Ciji Dunne of the soap opera Knots Landing. Like most television serial, "whodunnit" are big draws for ratings (think "Who Killed J.R." or "Who Killed Mister Burns" and you get the idea). Well the big cliffhanger for Season 4 was a fast-raising starlet singer Ciji, who showed up, taking most of the spotlight and then ultimately murdered for the cliffhanger at the end of the season.
Incidentally, the actress Lisa Hartman, came back in the next season as Ciji's doppelgänger, Cathy Geary.
Other things we talked about:
- Looking back at 2007, yes, 2007.
- Radio Milwaukee, Radiohead, Havana, etc
- Music discover, back in the day
- Our love for 120 Minutes and Matt Pinfield♥ (the clip I used was the parody of "Pat Minfield" for "120 Midgets")
- Travis and Belle & Sebastian
- T.I.'s Paper Trail, Fleet Foxes, Little Dragon

The weekly podcast will probably be less-than-weekly because of my schedule. I'm hoping to have on old friends in future shows, particularly Ryan who is still missing in action (although I did catch up with him recently when he was home for the holidays). Also, having said not-so-weekly, I did just wrapped up a recording session with Ceji. The podcast will be out this Sunday, but if you're already subscribed, you may get it in your feed sooner.
Among the music she's listening to, she highly recommended Little Dragon. When I found out that singer Yukimi Nagano was Swedish/Japanese, I immediately thought of Maia Hirasawa. Kudos for the bicycle bell on Little Dragon's song "Recommendation".
Also, just a quick shout-outs to some links/mention of W♥M in the blogs: KPerfetto thinks we're one of the places to discover new music. Yay!
We're also getting a ton of
Twitter requests, thanks to Ariel and recently a post from Gulf Coast Bands:
I've been trying to follow you back. However, if you're over abusing your twitterness (like posting 30 messages in 30 minutes, you are so removed). I'm also not convince about twitter, right now that 140-character limit is ridiculous and if you follow over 20 people, it's completely and utterly useless. As you can see, Twitter is a very powerful tool if taken advantage of and used correctly. It is in my opinion, that every band and musician should have a twitter for their fans to follow. It’s free and the possibilities are endless on who can spread the word about your work. Check out some links below to other people using twitter.

So, I was snooping around the Facebook, I still don't really use the service so it was a shock to me that we have 76 fans - shocked that 76 people accidentally clicked on the 'become a fan' button. Anyway, I think you may have to be an admin to view the breakdowns, but between women vs men - the girls are winning with 62%. Our demographic is the sweetspot of 25-34 year olds (which I will be leaving this age group very soon as I'm a very old man).
We now see about 50/50 digital submissions vs physical CD/mailouts. At the rate it's going, I would hazard digital distribution will be more than 75% by the year's end. Which I'm fine with, but I still ♥ old compact discs.
Other trends I've started to notice is that more people I know are starting to drop their cable bills in favor of just watching television via the internet. I think this is great news, considering that I've been doing this for a while and dropping over-the-air altogether last year.
One service that I've been testing out is Playon. The program is still very beta, I've experiences freeze-ups and "data corruption". When you're watching a serial television show, that's upsetting as it's not like you can skip to the next episode. It's also cool to be able to watching hulu or netflix via my ps3, but it's lame that I have to have a computer to stream the media. I may think about purchasing something like a Roku box if/when it is able to stream hulu and other media sources.
So that's about it for now. Hope 2008 was good for you, and here's to 2009.

One of my favorite Joni Mitchell songs, covered by one of my favorite bands. Enjoy your holidays! I'm going back to the kitchen =E
--Ceji
Jim Noir and I are friends. Well, MySpace friends anyhow. I was really excited to see that he had new music up on his page, and I was even more excited when Barsuk sent along a copy of his new album. I liked it so much, I almost forgot that I actually had work to do. On with the review!
Those of you who are going "Jim who?" chances are that you've already heard him. Remember that really catchy Adidas commercial with the little boys playing soccer? That was Jim Noir. A version of "My Patch" off his first albumb Tower of Love was used by Target during this past holiday season as well.
Jim (he and I are on a first name basis) plays all instruments on his albums, and does all the finishing work. It's very much a DIY operation. His sound could best be described as electronic pop with a 70's feel, and my two favorite songs are very much in that vein. Jim has been on every summertime playlist I've had the past few years, and he's always enjoyed by everyone.
"All Right" is a groovy little tune, with a nice dancing beat and layered vocals is like summertime in an mp3. If you don't do a little shimmy or two while listening, then your heart is probably two sizes too small. "Ships and Clouds" is also another one of my favorites. Different funky beat, but same layered vocals. I think I enjoyed this album a lot more because Jim's vocals have improved a lot since Tower of Love.
Jim Noir was released April 8th and is available at your fine record retailer or via iTunes. Check out Jim Noir via Barsuk Records or better yet, friend him on MySpace and catch him on tour!
I wanted to post this entire album up here. I really did. field manual is actually Chris Walla's second solo album, and I was more than happy to see it. After a report of the hard drive actually being confiscated at the US/Canada border, I was even a little worried that it would be delayed. Thank God for external hard drives!
If Chris Walla's name sounds familiar, I should probably tell you he's the guitarist/producer in Death Cab for Cutie. He's also done work with The Decemberists and Tegan and Sara. If you're a fan of any of these bands, you're already quite familiar with Chris' sound and field manual doesn't disappoint.
The opening song "Two-Fifty" is full of the harmonies that we are so used to hearing with DCFC. This was my favorite song, not only because it reminded me of those harmonies, but there was something more stripped down and ethereal to them that I really liked. The simple drum beat in the background keeps a simple time and it's really easy to focus on the song and the meaning.
I tried not to make too many comparisons to that other band that Chris is in, but I'm such a big fan that I couldn't help it. I thoroughly enjoyed this album, and I'm on the hunt for more Chris Walla. In fact, Chris has more downloads available at his website Hall of Justice. You can also stream more tracks on his official MySpace page, or pre-order field manual in the Barsuk Shop and enjoy!
field manual is released January 29th, 2008.
Loudlife were the biggest surprise out of all the albums I was given to review. I typically don't read the inserts that come with the CD's - I try to guess what the album is going to sound like before I color my opinions with anyone else's. That said, I thought that Loudlife were going to be your run of the mill rock band.
Boy was I wrong.
Fronted by a woman that puts most male rock vocalists to shame and a guitarist that has clearly studied his Jimmy Page, Loudlife lulled me in with a sweet guitar riff and then blasted my face off. Almost quite literally. This CD is meant to be played at the highest volume possible.
Lead singer Lorraine Ferro boasts quite an impressive resume - she performs in Loudlife and two other bands. She's a songwriter, voice over actor and songwriting coach. She's written two multi-platinum Gospel hits in the middle of all of that!
Guitarist aka "the guitarsenal" Geoff Sobel provides the hard rocking yet melodic guitar riffs that Loudlife should be known for. It's not often that a song can be beautiful and hard rocking, which is what surprised me most about Loudlife.
Sadly, there are no upcoming tour dates for Loudlife and from their previous schedule it looks like they only tour on the East Coast. The most up-to-date information I've found was via their MySpace
Enjoy these tracks from their only album to date. I hope they come out with new music soon!
