The people over at The Music Slut (or at the very least, Matt, a self-proclaimed horn-rimmed glasses-wearing non-emo) are massive Morrissey/Smiths fan have compiled a their TMS♥MOZ.
They have been unveiling a cover everyday at 4pm until the end of May. Most of the tracks are downloaded directly from their website, with the exception of A Brief Smile's "Speedway". Possibly because it's a much longer track (larger file).
Since I'm actually kind of lazy when it comes to checking the website everyday, I've downloaded all the tracks currently and will probably forget the last five tracks. Well, that's just the way it goes.

Of all the songs, I was drawn the songs that rarely gets covered, like "Suffer Little Children" (not sure if I like the synth/electronic approach by Chris Garneau), "The Headmaster Ritual" (reduced to a slow piano and backup vocals by Max Vernon) and "November Spawned A Monster" (Microfilm's version has techno beats - a weird approach, but it's fun).
My favorite song so far is Exit Clov's "Sing Your Life". It's pretty faithful to the original, but with female vocals. They seem to understand this song needs a "lovely singing voice" and also the message of 'nothing lasts forever, so... do it now'.
I have included the original announcement below.

Posted by m | 5.1.09 12:00 pmAs many of you are well aware, I’m a massive Morrissey fan. In fact, ‘massive’ might just be an understatement. As Mozzer’s 50th birthday approaches (May 22nd), I wanted to celebrate in some sort of special manner. After much deliberation, I decided that a covers project would be the perfect way for The Music Slut to mark the occasion. Over the course of the last few months, I’ve asked a bevy of my favorite artists to contribute tracks to TMS Hearts Moz. Highlighting a selection of their choice, the result is a 19 song compilation that includes renditions of Smiths favorites, Morrissey rarities and nearly everything in between. I’m so proud to present this to you, our dear readers, and I’m forever thankful to each of the acts that took time out of their busy schedules to submit their own interpretations of some of my most cherished tunes. Beginning on May 4th, and concluding on May 28th, one cover will be profiled & available for free download every weekday at 4PM EST.
The full list of artists included on TMS Hearts Moz (in alphabetical order) is as follows: A Brief Smile, Bridges & Powerlines, Chris Garneau, Deleted Scenes, Exit Clov, Free Blood, The Glass, Laura Palmer, Max Vernon, Microfilm, Mixel Pixel, My Burgundy Waltz, Pattern Is Movement, The Physics Of Meaning, Sharon Van Etten, Soren Anders, Spanish Prisoners, Teddy Blanks & Unicycle Loves You.
In addition to the digital LP, we’ll be teaming up with DJ Jess & the team behind Trash! for an unforgettable extravaganza on the evening of Moz’s 50th birthday. It will be held at New York’s Studio (at Webster Hall) on Friday, May 22nd. The celebration will feature live cover performances from A Brief Smile & Teddy Blanks in addition to a slew of surprises that we can’t reveal just yet. Much more info to come shortly. Dust off your dancing shoes & be certain save the date. Once again: MAY 22ND @ THE STUDIO!

Or, was. Or, might still be. Or, I don't know. Don't mention it. Very confusing.
Anyway, on this day, in the great state of New Jersey, the hyper-masculine, miniscule bibliophile known as Glenn Danzig was born... born to wear mesh shirts and violently hump air. Thank Cthulhu.
With less fanfare than last year's lack of fanfare, we salute Mr. Danzig and wish him 53 more years of howling with the wolves and humping with the hoes.
From 2007's The Lost Tracks of Danzig, the acoustic version of "Come to Silver", a song originally written for Johnny Cash, is a hell of a lot better than the one that appears on 1996's Blackacidevil. It's not about alchemy, in case that you wondered. Simple and melancholy, it reminds me of a typical, late-19th century novel chronicling the rise and bitter demise of some poor schmuck -- all in less than 4 minutes.

There are a ton of album releases today! Here are the ones that might interest you:
The Mars Volta - The Bedlam In Goliath
From the ashes of At the Drive-In, The Mars Volta releases their fourth album, The Bedlam in Goliath, today.
There's a bunch of "exclusives", so for die-hard fans, you will have a very tough time tracking down all the extra bonus tracks.
I know that Best Buy have an exclusive 2nd live disc and if you got your CD from Japan, it comes with a DVD and a cover song of The Sugarcubes' "Birthday".
Their version is very... er.. very strange. I have to say "good try" though.
Chris Walla - Field Manual
Ceji previously wrote the review for this album, I suggest you read it if you're at all interested in Death Cab for Cutie.
There's not much to add, except that there is a limited edition (with a bonus CD) and as pointed out by Dale, you also get a couple of extra songs for downloads.
Description from Barsuk:
Available in two versions: Standard digipak cd package, or limited-edition deluxe clothbound cd package. Both come with a 32-page booklet featuring Chris' original photography.
SPECIAL LIMITED-TIME OFFER: Order by February 4th and get 3 non-album MP3 bonus tracks!
Shelby Lynne - Just a Little Lovin'
There's a few country albums released today, but since I don't have Willie Nelson's A Moment of Forever, I'm just going to talk about Grammy-Winner Shelby Lynne's Just a Little Lovin'.
Her 10th album is an all Dusty Springfield cover album. I take it back, there is one original song on here, it's called "Pretend". This song is written by Shelby Lynne and is mostly acoustic... in the same vein as her Dusty covers.
I love the album artwork, I think it may have been inspired by the live album Dusty in Memphis.
If you get the Best Buy digipack version as it comes with a bonus DVD with two live songs.
Louis XIV - Slick Dogs and Ponies
The only thing I know about Louis XIV is that all their songs are about drugs and sex. Right?
I'm glad to see that their latest release does not feature old porno images, instead you get darken green pictures of the band (I think).
Anyway, according to wikipedia: There's a Traitor in This Room is the lead single for the album, but I couldn't find evidence of this anywhere. It's not even available on the US iTunes store. By all accounts, it looks like Guilt by Association is the single.
Xiu Xiu - Women As Lovers
You may have remember seeing the disturbing album artwork for
A Promise. Trust me, it's an image you cannot unsee.
Their cover of Tracy Chapman's "Fast Car" is also equally as disturbing.
Anyway, I haven't listen to Women as Lovers, but I noticed that they did another cover on the new album. This time it's Queen's "Under Pressure".
This version is actually pretty good, I wish it would utilize more of that awesome bass that Vanilla Ice took advantage of.
Joe Jackson - Rain
Don't forget that the CD/DVD combo album Rain by Joe Jackson is released today! It looks like I may have to review the album as Ryan is computerless.
Besides from from the awesome DVD (please see my review), the album is reminiscence of his popular Night and Day album. Joe Jackson returns to his piano-driven music, which I'm calling the Joe Jackson Trio (all jazz trios are named after their pianist).
Listening to the album, I was drawn to "Rush Across The Road", a song about seeing a complete stranger and wanting to rush over to her to get to know her. It's very easy-listening reminds me of a more optimistic version of the very bitter Positively 4th Street.
Jackson's ability to tell stories in short pop/jazz songs can also be heard on "Invisible Man" which I think is about a famous person slowly fading into obscurity.
Like most of his songs, it's open for interpretation.

Wow! The Cruxshadow are the hottest dance group! They have legion of fans, who made their single "Birthday", the number one US Dance single for the week of Sep 22 2007 on Billboard. Not only that, but last year's single "Sophia" climbed the Billboard charts to #3 the same week that "Birthday" debut. "Sophia" also debut at #1 in 2006, displacing Beyoncé.
Both singles are from their 2007 album DreamCypher.
The band have been around since 1992, forming in Tallahassee, Florida. Originally with Rogue, Sean Flanagan and Tim Curry (I don't think it's that Rock Horror guy), the band's line up changed in 1997 when both Flanagan and Curry left the band.
The band is known for their long tour (averages about 100+ shows a year), but it seems in 2008 they are only sticking to major music festivals in Europe, where they are enjoying massive success.
I have to admit, I really love "Birthday". What is it about that Darkwave/80s Sound that I love so much? Is it the synthesisers? The moody vocals? I can't put my fingers on it, I just know I really like this sound.
Even the two other mixes (a radio edit and a club mix) are also good, considering that I'm not a fan of remixes. The radio edit is understandable since it cuts the song off by a full minute. It's not a simple edit, because the radio song has fewer beats and brings up the vocals more clearly. The "Through the Looking Glass Club Mix" stretches out the song and put even more synth and making it kind of like a dance house song.
Also on the EP is the only new song: "The 8th Square". The best part of this sing is the electric violin and the very catchy line that ends at each song verse: "And I will strive with all my power/To reach the 8th and final square".
The other
song, "White Rabbit", is a Jefferson Airplane song. I haven't actually
heard the original song, but this is a pretty strange song about Alice in Wonderland.
DreamCypher was released earlier this year (Jan 16th) and their smash single Birthday was released Sept 4th, on Dancing Ferret Discs.
Watch me bopping my head to "Birthday" on W♥M Video #3:
PS, working with other W♥M people to submit their videos, so this may be the last vu-solo video effort.

I uploaded the original "White Rabbit" by Jefferson Airplane, and the remake by The Cruxshadows in case anyone wants to compare them.
The remake of "White Rabbit" reminds me of a cover of Tori Amos' "Bliss" by Glampire for some strange reason.
In a letter dated Feb 28, 2007, on their official website, it looks like everyone in the band, The Velvet Teen, have left to focus on other projects (and strangely, one of them have died). But that doesn't mean that the band have broken up, according to that letter.
They have released three full length albums, Out Of The Fierce Parade (Mar 2002), Elysium (Jul 2004), and Cum Laude! (Jul 2006). I don't actually have any of their albums, but I did check out a few MP3s from their record company, Slowdance, for free. They sound like your standard indie boy rock band, but then again, I haven't really listen to those songs.
The most interesting of their songs that I have is their cover of the Magnetic Fields' "No One Will Ever Love You" (which is probably undoubtably one of the best songs off their 69-songs triple-album, 69). The Velvet Teen's version features Joshua Staples singing in a, it's hard to describe, like a woman-sounding voice at the start.
I am also including the original version here, which does not feature Stephin Merritt's vocals, but Shirley Simms. For more information about that 69 album, see 69lovesongs.info.
PS, I dedicate this song to Morrissey, who's birthday is today. Steven Patrick, I've come to wish you an unhappy birthday! :)

According to Holidays on the Net, today is Fred Astaire's birthday. So, I thought I'd post a song he's made popular that many musicians have covered.
"Night and Day" was written by Cole Porter and is part of the Great American Songbook. It was written for the 1932 play Gay Divorce and was featured in the 1934 film adaptation, The Gay Divorcee. Fred Astaire sung it in both the play and the film. In 1946, a movie called Night and Day was made starring Cary Grant as Cole Porter and Alexis Smith as Linda Lee Porter. It's about "the fictionalized biography of composer Cole Porter from his days at Yale in the 1910s through the height of his success to the 1940s." More information about the song can be obtained from the Wikipedia entry.
Now,
for the goodies... below is an overload of the various covers of the
song including Fred Astaire's and Cole Porter's versions. If you can
believe it, there are even more! Sorry for the odd alignment, but I can't seem to get everything aligned the way I intended. Vu came to the rescue.
