Anyway, this is actually a "musical film", written by Murdoch and will also feature some B&S songs as well as originals... And whether you were disappointed in their movie soundtrack efforts with Storytelling (well maybe I was the only one disappointed), the few songs I've heard sounds fantastic. Particularly some excerpts in the "Introduction" video and "Come Monday Night". The later song is an orchestral song that sounds like a 60s girl pop band. At least that's what I think of when I hear Catherine Ireton's vocals over the sweeping music.
I don't know when the film will come out, or if it's even shot, but the soundtrack looks solid. The release dates for the Come Monday Night single to be out on May 11th (backed with the b-side, "Howard Jones Is My Mozart"), while the full album will be out on June 22nd on Rough Trade Records*.
You should be excited. This is wonderful news, especially since people get the impression that B&S are broken up. If you discount the one "Are You Coming Over for Christmas" song, they haven't released new material since The Life Pursuit in 2006.
Reading about the new album, it also features vocals from Asya, Smoosh, Neil Hannon, Brittany Stallings, Dina Bankole, Celia Garcia, and Alex Klobouk.
So watch the video, listen to the song, and be happy.
* I've long had a high respect and love for Rough Trade ever since I discovered them when I discovered the Smiths in the early 90s."I was out for a run and I got this tune in my head. It occurred to me that it wasn't a Belle & Sebastian song. I could hear female voices and strings, I could hear the whole thing, but I just couldn't envisage myself singing it with the group."

W♥M041: Belle & Sebastian's "Your Cover's Blown" [download (13 mins)]
|
It's been a while since our last podcast, part of the problem was that it was just taking longer and longer to produce (this is especially true when we have three guests on at a time).
Since I still would like to continue the radio show, I've decided I am going to do a series of these breakdown of songs for you. I'll have to warn you that these upcoming songs are songs that I have listened to a dozen time and know them like the back of my hand. So they might not be your cup of tea.
My first song of choice is "Your Cover's Blown" by Belle & Sebastian. If you've never heard a B&S song, this song sounds nothing like they've ever done.... by venturing into the strange world of funk and piecing together three or four different songs into one gigantic epic of a song.
Clocking in at six minutes (I am wrong in thinking it's eight minutes - it should be eight minutes...), this song takes you on a rollercoaster of a ride... even ending on a false ending.

All the news below have appeared on news.weheartmusic.com, so be sure to bookmark the website if you are a music junkie. So let's get to it:
[1] BELLE & SEBASTIAN: THE BBC SESSIONS
www.belleandsebastian.com ♥ myspace.com/thebandbelleandsebastian
Fans waiting for brand spanking new tracks will have to wait a few years. Jeepster (UK) and Matador (US) will be releasing this compilation on November 17th.
Of course, as already a long-time fan, I will tell you that I already have a (crappy) recording of the over-the-air broadcast. I'm obviously still going to get a copy (particularly the limited double-CD version), just in time for Christmas, I suppose.
Highlight from the compilation is alternative version of "Lazy Line Painter Jane", which I'm quite curious about.
I'm definitely glad I will be able to replace my bootleg copy for this (assumingly remastered) version. In the meantime, enjoy their cover version of The Beatles' "Here Comes the Sun", this track will be available on the 2nd bonus CD if you get the limited edition.
[2] BOB DYLAN'S "MISSISSIPPI" AVAILABLE FREE ON AMAZON.COM
www.bobdylan.com ♥ myspace.com/bobdylan
Columbia Records announced that for a limited time, you can download this song on www.amazon.com/mp3, in promotion for Bob Dylan's Tell Tale Signs - The Bootleg Series Vol 8. I don't know how long the song is available for free, so you might as well download it while you can. I am assuming the promotion will end when the Bootleg #8 is officially released on October 7th, but that's only an assumption.
The story behind this song was that it was originally recorded for the 1997 album (Tell Tale Signs), but a very different version of "Mississippi" eventually made it out on 2001's Love and Theft.
This version actually is more stripped down. Bob Dylan's 8th installment in his so-called Bootleg Series will be available in a two-disc format and a three-disc deluxe format. Hardcore fan will want the 3-disc format, of course.
[3] SUPERDRAG'S NEW ALBUM OUT IN 2009
www.superdrag.com ♥ myspace.com/superdragofficial
Details about the 'drag's new album is kind of sketchy. I'm told that they're still in the process of recording a yet-untitled new album pending for release in early 2009.
What is exciting about this new album is that it will feature the original line from 1998's Headtrip In Every Key. The one song that I was sent to preview is "Filthy And Afraid (Stealth Mix D)", which I'll have to admit is pretty rockin'.
Fans will note that it has that "Sucked Out" vibe to it.
Dream Bitches are a folk-pop group from New York. They have a sophomore album, Coke-and-Spiriters coming out on May 20th, and just by noticing their cover of Belle & Sebastian's "Me and the Major", I can already tell you that I will absolutely love this band.
Their version feels more like a singalong, with some great guitar playing. The original song is a gobful of fast-singing lyrics, so I'm glad to see that they manage to pull off the cover without mangling the lyrics. I mean, try saying "me and the major comes from different worlds, but if I get stuck in the lift its always with a toff", especially if you have no idea what a toff is.
B&S aside, this band is really between two BFF, Yoko Kikuchi and Ann Zakaluk. They started making music as Black Molly, and listening to Coke-and-Spiriters I get the impression that they have this really cute sense of humor. For instance, "Sweet Anneth" tells the story a girl who accidentally had 16 children, all the result of that she "sips cider through a straw". That probably didn't make sense to you, but that's the punchline.
Although, from my understanding, that this album has more of a fuller sound (with the addition of Casey Holford - the only boy, Julie DeLano - the bass, and Jen Knee - drums), and certainly songs like "Maniacal Mechanic" and "Hierarchy Island" really shows this off. However, surprisingly, I much more prefered the acoustic song, such as "Bronxy Marie" and "Spoke on a Wheel", that mostly centers around Yoko's vocals (hey, that rhymes).
The album ends with "Way to Go", a "serious" song, but with a Dream Bitches nerdiness, of course. Lyrics like "I'll be your Silver Surfer" and "We will hold hands/but only under the table/I will be your Soup of the Day" definitely deserves thumbs up from me.
By the way, there's also a hidden track, about Sammie Thompson, so be sure to stay after the credits roll.
Coke-and-Spiriters is out next Tuesday on RIYL Records, any fans of cute duo-singing and lyrically-obsessed fans should want this album in their collection.

I wanted to mention that Arrica Rose & The ... (arricarose.com) has an LP that was released yesterday (April 14th), but due to the rough post office, the CD arrived last week cracked (see image). Does anyone know if you can fix cracked CDs?
I've requested another CD to be sent out, but I just wanted to let you know that I'm pretty good about deadline/due dates, even though I am off by one day. You see, Tuesday is normally "new CD release day", not Monday.
As soon as I get a review copy, you'll see something written up, apologies to Arrica Rose.
Speaking of new CD releases, here are stuff that's being released today (April 15th): Everclear - Vegas Years, The Kooks - Konk, Phantom Planet - Raise The Dead, William Shatner & The Arkansas Symphony Orchestra - Exodus: An Oratorio in Three Parts (WTF????!!!??), Ours - Mercy (Dancing For The Death Of An Imaginary Enemy), and Hilary McRae - Through These Walls.
That last name listed is Hilary McRae (hilarymcrae.com), who I've reviewed earlier this month.
I've noted that she is on the Starbucks Record label, which I think will do very well for her - and you know what? It's paid off. She's apparently the opening up or have opened up for such major acts as Huey Lewis & The News, Fergie, and Natasha Bedingfield.
And did I mention she's only 21? Far out.
Here are the rest of her Spring dates:
April 15 – Jackie Gleason Theatre w/ Todd Rundgren – Miami, FL
April 21 – The Living Room – New York, NY
May 2 – SunFest – West Palm Beach, FL
June 7 – Pride Fest – Milwaukee, WI

Fans of Ex-Belle & Sebastian Isobel Campbell (isobelcampbell.com) should be happy to know that she and Mark Lanegan (myspace.com/marklanegan) have decided to team up again for their second duet album Sunday at Devil Dirt, which comes out on May 5, 2008.
You see, after their highly successful Ballad of the Broken Seas (2006), she went off and released Milkwhite Sheets (2006), which many critics cited was "beauty without the beast". What they were trying to say is that, although Campbell's vocals are sweet and pure, it's really the sinister growl of Lanegan that made it consistently interesting.
And based on the songs that I've listened to, it's true. Lanegan, once again, takes the spotlight on this album.
Hope to hear more from them soon.
My last news item comes from ISL, who announces "Romanian-Born Band Raises The "Iron Curtain" on File Sharing".
Once in a while, I do see bands being very pleased that their music is being trade and are happy that their music are getting in the hands of those that would not have bought it in the first place.
To add a twist to this, REDiCLAN (rediclan.com) noted that most of the music sharing are from Eastern Europe and that "Due to the harsh social conditions before the crash and burn of communism, Eastern Europe has always been friendlier to underground and trend-breaking music than the Britney Spears culture. I’m glad to know RED i CLAN is among the bands people want to hear."
I do have the CD, Killohead, in-house for review so I'll make sure the review is up prior to April 29th, which along with a ton of other CDs are being released.
That's it for this week's news. Unhappy tax day!

Here are the Top 7 most talked about musicians on W♥M (based on tags).
The winner is Morrissey (14 tags) and The Smiths (11 tags), which is all my fault as every possible opportunity presents itself - I will mention the great Mozzer.
Radiohead came in second with 11 tags, obviously because of the news they generated by giving away their album, In Rainbows for any price you can afford.
Belle & Sebastian also made a few appearance, mostly because I love them and they recently gave away "Are You Come Over for Christmas" as an xmas gift.
And as usual, Stars are heavily covered by a few of us. Most recently appearing as a Top 7 Concert and also Most Favorite song with 15 people marking "This Charming man" cover as a favorite.
Blur made some appearances, with some stories such as Blur to finally reunite with Coxon? and Blur Drummer Running for Office in London. By the way, Dave Rowntree didn't win the election.
Obviously we're all big fans of 80s alternative, so it's really no surprise that The Cure made it on the list.
Shockingly, Avril Lavigne made it on this list with over six mentions. It started with The Rubinoos suing Lavigne over her "hey hey you" bit in her hit song "Girlfriend".
For a comparison, I suggest you head over to The Rubinoos vs Avril Lavigne and listen for yourself (they sound nothing alike).

Belle & Sebastian that well-loved band from Glasgow, Scotland, are back with a new Christmas song called "Are You Coming Over for Christmas?". The song is available for download on their official myspace on Christmas day.
Fans of B&S should already have their special Christmas Peel Session from 2002, but in case you don't have it, here the Christmas tracks from that session:
- Oh Come All Ye Faithful
- Christmas Time Is Here
- Santa Claus (The Sonics)
- Santa Claus Go Straight To The Ghetto (James Brown)
- Silent Night
- O Little Town Of Bethlehem
- Santa Bring My Baby Back To Me (Elvis Presley)
- O Come O Come Emmanuel
- I Took Some Time For Christmas
- The Twelve Days of Christmas
Here's another Christmas song from one of our favorite, The Pipettes. Good luck on finding this 7" single, as there were only two hundred of them made (by hand) and was only available at their Christmas show in 2004. The song, "In the Bleak Midwinter", is an old Lutheran Christmas Hymn, originally written by Gustav Holst.
They're currently on tour through Australia, but they still managed to put together a "Bandzine" The Pipettes Christmas Zine just time for Christmas. I did download the PDF file and it looks very professional for a bandzine.
Tour dates as follows:
12/29/07 The Factory Sydney, AUS
12/30/07 Tasmania Falls Festival Victoria, AUS
12/31/07 Tasmania Falls Festival Victoria, AUS
01/02/08 East Bruswick Melbourne, AUS
01/05/08 Southbound Festival Western Australia
Meanwhile, Manic Street Preachers is also offering a new Christmas song called "Ghost of Christmas" on their myspace. This is an original song with some jab at expensive technologies::
No xbox and no computers
We just used our imagination
A leather football was perfection
What more could you want
I wouldn't mind a soccer ball to play outside, but unfortunately it's snowing outside so I'm going to stay indoors with my PS3 :)
Anyway, the band is still around, releasing Send Away The Tigers on February 2007, and is actually the only album I don't have from this band. I guess, I'm just waiting to find it really cheap/used and there's really no compelling reason for me to rush out to get the album.
I think the only song I know off of it is "Your Love Alone Is Not Enough" (that song with the Cardigans singer Nina Persson) which I think is quite popular.
Apparently so popular that NME have named MSP the 2008 "God Like Geniuses" Award.
Finally, remember the awesome Strawberry Fair (Jenny Franzén)? Lately she's been busy with her live band with: Mathias (Kissing Mirrors, Sarto, Twig), Alice (After School Sports, The Never Invited to Parties), David (The Morning Paper), Ida (The Bridal Shop), Maria (The Happy Birthdays[W♥M]), appearing on Digfi playing some Christmas songs.
The two songs she did was "Let it Snow! Let it Snow! Let it Snow!" and "Winder Wonderland". I thought you can only watch it on Windows Media Player, but I was told that it will work on a mac using flip4mac.
The band was also recently on Rip It Up! 2007, you can watch some clips on youtube.
PS, this may be the last xmas post from me! You're welcome!

I just saw Juno, the Jason Reitman film (of Thank You For Smoking fame). There are a few things that really impressed me about this witty and funny comedy: the actors, writing (although Juno, played by Ellen Page, is sometime too outrageous and quirky to be a believable 16 year old girl), the Minnesotan cities (!), and the awesome soundtrack.
If you haven't heard anything about this movie, the film is about Juno MacGuff who finds out that she's pregnant after having sex with Paulie Bleeker, played by the always awkward Michael Cera. She considered having an abortion, before changing her mind to give birth and to give up her baby for adoption. The movie follows her as she searches for the perfect couple to give up her baby and ultimately discovers herself and her true feelings.
The soundtrack consists mostly of Kimya Dawson (including a Moldy Peaches
song, "Anyone Else but You", which really is the movie's anthem song)
and, notably Belle & Sebastian (two songs, "Piazza New York
Catcher" and "Expectations"), as well as Cat Power ("Sea of Love") and
The Kinks ("A Well Respected Man").
On a side note, The Kinks seems to be enjoying a year of soundtrack as they also appeared on The Darjeeling Limited and Hot Fuzz.
So the song I wanted to use was the cover of The Moldy Peaches' "Anyone Else But You" (originally appearing on their debut 2001 album). What's really cool about this cover song is that it's actually sung by the two main actors, Ellen Page and Michael Cera. What's even cooler: the two actors played the song themselves on acoustic guitars :)
Anyway, a great soundtrack, but I'm sure all the blogs are also saying the same thing, so I'll just leave it at that.
PS, there is an appearance by Rainn Wilson who plays the store clerk at the beginning of the film. He really stole all the scene whenever he's on! Hilarious.
PPS, bonus points for mentioning The Wizard of Gore and Dario Argento's Susperia.

Seems silly to compile compilation albums, isn't it?
Well, compilation albums are such a great source of discovering new
music. Especially if they're cover compilations (since you already know
some of the songs, you're willing to take a chance on something new). So below are some compilations that I thought I'd bring to your attention. Plus two of them are available for download for free, so check it out:
|
A CENTURY OF COVERS The most interesting cover is "Get Me Away I'm Dying" translated into Italian by Perturbazione. To hear another version of this song by Bettie Serveert, head over to Cover Lover. |
TWIN TOWN HIGH: MUSIC YEARBOOK VOLUME 9
The other songs will be spotlighted later in my Minneapolis entry. |
|
HOY COMI SANDIA EP #2: A SWEDISH INDIE-POP COMPILADO
Most of the bands on this compilation have already been covered by us (see W♥M: Sweden). I wanted to mention a band that we haven't talked about: which would be Irene. Checking out their myspace, I noticed they're going to be playing Eurosonic Festival in January 2008. "Stardust" seems like a very short song but it's very good. I especially love Bobby's bold voice (it reminds me of 80s Europop). If you like this, you'll probably really love The Legends - which we're also reviewing here. |
HACKTONE DIGITAL SAMPLER 2007
I have created a custom cover art, in case you guys want to group them together under your Various Artists or Sampler folder. You can download the art by following this link (save it as a jpeg). Hacktone have been pretty good about giving free samples on their iTunes page, but since you need to live in the US and have an iTunes account, these unDRM free tracks are well worth checking out. For more details on Hacktone, visit their website or read our coverage of some of their artists on W♥M. |
|
EXOTIC RECORDINGS PRESENTS DIY DISS
This compilation, I believe some of the songs are original. I do know each of the introduction to the song (usually a "diss") were recorded exlusively for this compilation. I'm assuming these compilation (which aren't for sale) are given away if you buy a CD from them. |
EVERYTHING IS NICE: MATADOR RECORDS 10TH ANNIVERSARY ANTHOLOGY
The tracks that I really liked off this compilation is Non Phixon and The Arsonists. Obviously, Pavement is undoubtly one of the more popular band that is on this compilation - so here's "Stereo". The prices are pretty reasonably, I think I picked it up for $10 (for about 40 tracks!) |
|
REVOLUTIONS #3
This song is from The Gentle Wave's second album, Swansong for You (2000), it's my second favorite song after "Falling from Grace". Trivia: Isobel Campbell appears on the cover. |
NEW NOISE #13
I've discovered quite a few good bands from these samplers, their latest one has a great track by Lily Allen. This song is pretty cute, it's about coming up with excuses to avoid being picked up - including the hilarious "I'm pregnant, yeah." |

1996 - Major League Baseball All-Star Game Most Valuable Player
Jun 1997 - Player of the Month
Aug 1997 - Player of the Month
I've been going to a few baseball games, can you believe how expensive beer is? I sometime think people don't really go out to watch the game, but to drink (before, during, and after the game!).
I've already used "Take Me Out to the Ball Game" (which includes Eddie Vedder singing "buy some peanuts and crack"), so I'm going to use Belle & Sebastian's "Piazza, New York Catcher" this time.
The song is not really about Mike Piazza, but more or less a love song. If you follow the lyrics, Stuart Murdoch, is reminiscencing about the time he shared his love of baseball and how they hung around the Giants' Candlestick Park in San Francisco. The lyrics are very colorful and descriptive.
Incidentally, towards the end of the song:
A lady stepping from the songs we love until this day
You'd settle for an epitaph like "Walk Away, Renee"
This is a reference to the Left Banke's hit song "Walk Away Renee".
Anyroad, I've seen B&S twice now, and a year apart, and everytime Murdoch sings this song, he consistently cannot remember the lyrics. He even pulls out the written lyrics, but still manages to mix up his lyrics. I suppose, it's part of the charm of live performances.
