| W♥M049: Lio [download (11 mins)] |
Okay, so I'm in love with Lio, and it's somewhat frustrating to find out that she's not at all recognized/remembered in America. Today's W♥M Radio #49 episode will be about the Belgium lolita known simply as "Lio", named after a brown-haired teenage girl from the French comic book-turned-movie Barbarella.
My favorite song "Les brunes comptent pas pour les prunes", which literally translates to "The brown ones are not plums". The correct meaning actually was translated and sung in English by Lio called "Brunettes Are No Puppets", which was released as a single to the English-speaking countries circa 1986.
Well, I wish I can un-hear "Brunettes Are No Puppets", as I think I prefered it when I didn't know what Lio was singing about. But that's just the way it goes.
If you are thinking of getting an album from Lio, since most of her records was sold in France and possibly are out of print, the second-hand market can be very expensive. Some quick check and here's some examples: the rarely seen nude cover Wandatta for $42 and her only English album Suite Sixtine priced at $39... So yes, quite expensive. I did find a "Greatest Hits" Best of Lio, album for $19, that should get you started.

Real life Belgium couple, Danny Mommens and Els Pynoo are Vive La Fête, which means "long live the party". The band first caught my attention when they chose to cover Lio's "Bannana Split" and made it more electro on their Hot Shot EP (2005).
Apparently these guys are quite popular in the fashion world because Germany designer, Karl Lagerfeld is one of their biggest fan.
Not counting their compilation and remix albums, Jour de Chance is their 5th album since they started releasing CDs in 2000.
"Une Par Une" sounds a lot like Stereo Total[W♥M] to me. It's my favorite song, next to the remix of "La Route".
The remix of "La Route" actually appears on their latest remix EP called Jour de Chance Remixs which features the an altered image of the original album artwork.
As you can see between the original version of the song (see their video) and the Black Strobe Remix, they are completely different songs. More information on the French band, Black Strobe, on myspace, where it shows that they are currently on tour.
Speaking of tour, it looks like Vive La Fête are also on tour. I have included their tour dates here.

Do you remember the first time you discovered youtube and you spent hours and hours just watching music videos ? Well I have just re-discover that feeling on stage6.divx.com. The quality of the videos varies, but most of them are usually DVD resolution of 640x480.
When you go to that website, it will ask you to install its software, just agree to the EULA - it's worth it. Once you start watching the video, you'll noticed the ability to save these videos! They are in the DIVX video format, you can convert them to FLV or AVI if you have the right software!
So, what I've been watching: a ton of Alizee videos. I also discover this crazy Lio video, where she's in (I thought it was a really short dress at first) some kind of night gown. She was either 17 or 18 in this video, as her first single was "Banana Split" (1979) and her second was "Amoureux Solitarie" (1980).
Anyway, once you start watching these videos, you'll wonder how you ever did manage to put up with youtube! You can all thank me later.
For a cover of "Amoureux Solitaires", see coverlover.

We have here a French song called Banana Split by Lio. Lio was HUGE in the 80s, I think she was only sixteen when her song skyrocketed through the roof.
If you listen to it, it is really an amazing tune. I don't know French, but I will find myself singing to this in some alien language.
Also, if you look on youtube for this video, it's pretty bad. An underage girl dancing and singing under a giant banana (very phallic and just wrong).
