At some point in a band's career, they've gotten so huge that they can write their own ticket. I think Trapt have gotten to this point.
Since 2002, this Californian band have been tearing up the charts with their hard alternative rock sound. In some ways, they were ahead of their time by targeting to have their music on video games such as Project Gotham Racing and allowing fans to download exclusive tracks directly from them.
It's 2008, and the band have just released Only Through The Pain yesterday, August 5th on Eleven Seven Records. They are going to also release music on Rock Band (let's face it, Rock Band and Guitar Hero probably sells more music than radio these days) and ditched myspace. They created their own social network via onlythroughthepain.com instead. I suppose, in some ways, there is a lack of control on myspace and Trapt, looks to me, as a band that must have absolute control of their product.
You know, my perception of this band have always been hard-rock, almost metal, because of their association with Nickelback and Chevelle, but surprisingly it sounds more alternative rock (at least with this album, Only Through The Pain) than I thought.
Their sound is well-polished, even when they try to sound grungy... epic fail, as all their notes comes across very clean and controlled. However, I do get the impression that these guys are pretty hardcore playing live too - without the aid of a professional controller/mixer.
Some of the highlight from their new album includes the bass-y intro of "Cover Up", the energetic "Wasteland" song that set the tone of the album, and my favorite, "Contagious", a love song that could easily be mistaken for a Zombie song ("I let you in and you infected me, Can't get enough of you, I breathed you in and now I'm in too deep/And I am burning in your fire... There is no cure")
To be on the safe side, since everyone seems to be enjoying their latest single, "Who's Going Home With You Tonight", I have decided to go with this song. Look for this song on Rock Band.
Trapt is currently touring with Motley Crue on their Cruefest. Trapt singer, Chris Taylor Brown, recently appeared on MakeRockHistory.com talking about what an honor and opportunity it was to play with the Crue.

I thing it's a good thing that we see artists starting to take control to their web presence. I don't think the buseiness model behind MySpace Music is one that would benefit artists that are already established.
Of course, that will mean that instead of having one melting pot of artists and theirs mixing with one another, we'll have these small islands spread out the Internet seas but as social networks begin interacting with one another, bridges will be built.
