Imagine my surprise when I found out that not only are the progressive and operatic metal band Queensrÿche are alive and well - but they are actually going to be on tour! It's in June, which is quite a few months away, but perhaps if you want a guarantee seating, you should get your tickets early.
For those of you who grew up in the 90s, you might remember Empire and Operation: Mindcrime. Empire was especially accessible to a much wider audience outside of metal.
What's interesting about these recent tour is that these shows are basically Operation: Mindcrime performed live. If you've heard this album, it's kind of like a rock opera. The show will run about three hours, including an intermission and will also includes actors re-enacting the storyline.
Anyway, check the link (which basicaly is a press release) to read more information, here's an excerpt of the tour dates:
-
Glasgow Academy: June 13
Newcastle City Hall: June 14
Leeds University: June 15
Manchester Academy: June 17
Wolverhampton Civic Hall: June 18
Norwich UEA: June 20
Cambridge Corn Exchange: June 21
London Indigo: June 22
Bristol Colston Hall: June 24

This is an awesome band, and Mindcrime is an awesome concept album. The only concept album I like better is Dream Theater's Scenes from a Memory.
Queensryche has typically been lumped in with the 80s hair metal scene, but they are so much more than that, if that at all. They are progressive metal at its best, really. To see Operation: Mindcrime enacted would be fabulous!
I saw the Ryche perform at an open-air theater in Pittsburgh, with Dream Theater and Fates Warning. Great show, even though the volume was turned way down for Fates Warning, which was too bad. At the end, all members of the three bands came on stage together (save the drummer from Fates Warning) and performed a Queensryche tune or two together. Really cool.
The concept actually reminds me of Avantasia and, of course, Operation: Mindcrime - although Eternal Descent doesn't sound that hardcore or hard metal, but it's obvious where their influences lay.
