News: Did Avril Steal 'Girlfriend'?
We just got like 500 people visiting I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend and/or Girlfriend, so I looked up the news section to find out why. About four hours ago, a variety of news sites reported that The Rubinoos are suing Avril Lavigne's song "Girlfriend" because it sounded too much like their song "I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend".
I've listened to both song and I have to tell you that the Rubinoos are IN THE WRONG. The two songs are obviously very different to each other and there is just one line in question. How can you base a lawsuit around five or six words ?
The line in question is:
Avril Lavigne: "Hey, hey, you, you, I don't like your girlfriend"
The Rubinoos: "Hey, hey, I wanna be your boyfriend"
I hope Lavigne win this case, I honestly think she's cool and I have a lot of respect for her ever since I saw this video on savethemusicfan.com.
I'll sum it up for you: The RIAA was suing some poor underage girl for downloading music. Lavigne's record company, Nettwerk saw that one of the song was "Sk8r Boi" and decided to DEFEND the Texan girl.
So, BOO to the 'Noos!

Hmm. Still not exactly convincing me that it's enough for a suit, really.
How about someone putting up a Wire vs. Elastica? Yes, I am making a request that I cannot fulfill myself.
If she has been influenced by it, I'd argue she has placed it in a context that is sufficiently different to the original one.
I'd personally be uncomfortable living in a world where artists could claim intellectual property rights over such a simple sentence, especially one that most kids could produce in the playground.
I, personally, have no real loyalty to either party. I still think their strongest argument is based on the similar lyrics, and I believe, even if she was influenced by the Noos, there is sufficient difference.
/snarky off
It'll be interesting to check the two Contagious songs. I'll look into it. :)
Avril may or may not have ripped off a song, an entire album, an international bank. What is more troublesome is the amount of time I have dedicated to this issue. I need a proper job some time soon otherwise I'll go crazy :)
"Last month, Kreviazuk suggested to Performing Songwriter magazine that Lavigne took credit for a song Kreviazuk wrote called "Contagious."
Kreviazuk told the publication she gave a song called "Contagious" to Lavigne two years ago and was surprised to see a track with the same name on Lavigne's current disc with a credit to Lavigne and songwriter Evan Taubenfeld.
McBride said Kreviazuk has never even heard the Lavigne track and has since retracted her statement."
She's a Canadian singer-songwriter-piano-girl type. She's been around since the 90s, or rather I've been aware of her since '96 (when I briefly had MuchMusic). She is/was married to the guy from Our Lady Peace.
And, speaking of Canadians and my having my requests met, does anyone have a scan of that Feist interview in Bust? She talks about her relationship with Chris Murphy. That is why I want it. Yes, I know that he's a douche.
My uterus is throbbing. Later.
I really don't like Avril Lavigne, but I'll admit to downloading her "My Happy Ending" Song from iTunes and listening to it a decent amount of times.
And as far as I know, that song wasn't stolen or mentioned as stolen from anyone. =)
