I'm still kinda upset I never got to be Veronica's friend on Pownce...

She is a cutie...
Poor Pownce. Twitter pwn3d it

THANK YOU AND GOODNIGHT!
It wasn't so much a pwning as it was already a ubiquitous presence on the web even before Pownce came out.

And while Pownce was an improvement, it didn't do ENOUGH differently to warrant a sufficient following.

Still I'm sad to see it go.
True. I was just being silly. A friend of mine and I had an account on it. Then we forgot about it. Then we signed up with twitter and we're forgetting about that too. Well, I am. Maybe until I get a phone that's easier to txt with.
BTW, I am still not convinced about Twitter. I have updated it before when I'm out at concerts and live reporting, but beyond that, it's kind of not my thing (microblogging).

Also: people should not be updating on what they are having for dinner or useless stuff like that.... Or update like 300 times a day. Like seriously?
I know! Or little side comments that don't make sense to anyone else but you. And it sucks up txt quota (if you like to pay less for plans like that).
And not to mention people that writes 10 posts with @thisperson @thatperson @thisotherperson. Dude, just write them an email or PM them. Do people really need to see your replies? I'm really twitter-hating, I know.
It has been ages since I used Pownce. Actually, I don't think I ever really used it. Almost from the very beginning they had a nice piece of AIR software though. Hopefully they'll find a way of introducing something like that for VOX, for quick posting, etc.

I used Twitter at work, mostly to keep up to date with the BBC news feed. There was a vegan chef who posted what he was having for dinner, with the recipe. That was kinda useful. It is mostly a marketing tool and not enough people I actually care about use twitter for it to serve any real communication function.

My tweeting days are over now.

I have just forwarded the link of this conversation to my 81 year old father-in-law who I suspect is a bit disappointed with the demise of pownce.

I should note that from what I could see he was by far the most lively person on the darn thing. He is, however, a rather lively fellow.

I bet this will not go if I am not a member.
sounds like you either didn't use Pownce enough to really enjoy the great community over there, or, you just didn't become friends with some of the incredibly cool people I had found on Pownce. I thought 'Twitter clone' at first, but after using it, found that couldn't have been further from the truth.
But to each their own.
From my personal use of it, I can tell you that I was trying to produce content - there is really no formatting option. I tried to add more than two photos (not possible on my free account). You were basically limited to one link, one attachment, etc. It was basically really limited for what I was trying to do. Have you tried writing more than 300 words on pownce? It doesn't make it very easy at all with the tiny, tiny input box. But that's just me, trying to write long-form with multiple media on pownce, which was definitely not designed for that. If you used it as a short burst with one link or one attachment, it's what it's designed for, but that's too limited in my opinion. I also don't like Twitter in the same idea (I hate that 140 chars limit).
ah, that makes a big difference and true - it was not at all meant for that. Blogs are best suited for that, IMO. Still, the community I personally became a part of over there will be missed.
A problem with Point #1 - the staff of Pownce NEVER claimed to be a Twitter clone, nor aimed to be. It was designed for a closer knit group of friends then Twitter, allowing for private groups (which it did amazingly well) to share events, files, and links. I like/liked it more than Twitter in that it wasn't so public. A lot of times, I want to send my thoughts across the interwebs, but not make it accessible by just anybody. Its social web with limitors. If it wasn't for you, you didn't have to use it. I will miss it, and it sucks for those who never got into it long enough to see the awesomeness it provided.
Well said Slipstream. I totally agree.
What would you say set it apart from instant messaging, then?

I am asking out of curiosity as IM for me currently seems like a wasteland.
I was just getting to know Pownce and had not built up a large friend network. The death of this lovely site has not hurt me as much as it has others. I morn for others lose not mine.
As a Twitter user, I enjoy it and posting live from concerts such as NIN back in October. And you can set your Twitter account to allow only your followers see your tweets (updates).
I'm really sorry about Pownce, but we still have Twitter, though. I had a Pownce account but I deleted it because they're going to shut down Pownce on December 15th.
