Mama's Cookin'
Mama's Cookin' is from Gunnison, Colorado. Their sound is best described as a mix of modern hip-hop and delta blues sound. However, I would also add funk into the mix since, I honestly think that people can boogie to this sound.
I noticed that on their sophomore album that the people who worked on it are all old pros, working with such as acts as Prince, Jeff Beck, Dido, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Miles Davis, "The Boss", Willie Nelson, etc.
So having listened to this album for a week now, I keep thinking it sounds like G. Love and other blues/funk bands.
The songs I liked are: "What I Am", "Aquarius Skies", and "Black Reign" (which has a very familiar riff, I want to say it sounds like The Lovin' Spoonful's "Summer in the City").
The last song on the album, "One of a Nerve" is a cover song, originally by James Booker.
I wasn't so keen on "Lampin'" which sounds like it's deliberate slow for makeout sessions (you can listen to this on their music page)
The best song is "Sanctified", which is what I'll be using in this post. There is also a very strange instrument used in the song, it sounds like a weird rattle kazoo or something (perhaps someone can tell me what that sound is). Also check it out, he even gives a shout out to Sam Cooke in the song.
Mama's Cookin's sophomore album was released on 7/7/2007 and can be purchased on cdbaby.
