…And You Will Know Us by the Ridiculously Long Band Name and Other Obnoxious Idiosyncratic Moniker

I know people hated them, but I like the band name Neil Diamond Phillips

Thank you. Finally someone with the courage to talk about this. Openly. Honestly.

The last one is very funny, good post!!!
I hate trying to explain Sunn O)))'s name to people. And hearing people try to pronounce it.

I always thought "I Love You But I've Chosen Darkness" reeked more of irony than anything.

I think the worst band names ever, though, are The The and The Band, because that naming style combines almost everything that could possibly make a band name bad. That "The what-now?" factor, where people aren't sure if they heard correctly. Also, it's awkward to say, and therefore talk about. On top of that, it's just sort of grating in that "look how clever I am" sort of way, without managing to actually be clever at all. They named their bands after a way people often name their bands. That's just sort of corny and makes them sort of come off as novelty bands before they've even played a note.

Just my two cents.

While I'm sure every era has its share of bad band names, it seemed that '90s garage/butt rock seemed bent on them, and much like the ones you describe. Reality Bites was a bad movie, but watching Ethan Hawke's character explain his band was named "Well Hey, That's My Bike" was just classic. It was like youth culture decided that '70s and '80s pop bands giving themselves short, slick names really sucked and so they had to annoy the hell out of us with ridiculous ones.

@Soup: On top of that, it's just sort of grating in that "look how clever I am" sort of way, without managing to actually be clever at all.

Nicely stated.

re: ILYBICD: it's possible. if they were going for irony, though, they should have gone all out with the name (I'll think of one now: Join Me in the Dark Recess of My Pain). I Love You... isn't witty or funny enough to convince me that the fellas are just messing with our heads.

re: The The/The Band: yes, those are bad names. I feel similar about punctuation names; adding an unnecessary exclamation point or a weird symbol doesn't = clever; it = gimmick.

re: Reality Bites: my favorite line in from that movie is "everyone dies alone." makes me laugh every time.

Like Godspeed You Black Emperor! becoming Godspeed You! Black Emperor? Or pretty much ever change A Silver Mt. Zion has ever made to its name?

Those are some pretty awful band names even though I'm really, really stoked on the bands who picked them.
yes! WTF. are you supposed to change the inflection when pronouncing their name now? it's all too much work.

i knew a few:
1. Forever The Sickest Kids
2. I Set My Friends on Fire
3. Scary Kids Scaring Kids
4. The Number 12 looks Like You
5. Bomb the Music Industry
i vote for any band name with numbers in their name. like blink 182, 69 boyz, yes, even ben folds five.
remember 98 degree and 311 ?

i am borderline when bands uses colors in their name too :/
Remember nu-metal band naming conventions? I just remembered those and I think they might trump a lot of things already discussed.

At the very least, it has to be said that intentional misspellings like "Korn" and "Staind" just make your band look illiterate, or, at best, like they're just trying too hard.
Limp Bizkit... doesn't help with your literacy case when you have a song called "N 2 Gether Now."
Great post. This would be from the "Robert Pollard" school of naming. Note that the Butthole Surfers employed the three-name trick with their album "Locust Abortion Technician" and "Independent Worm Saloon."
I had always thought "WTF?" about Death Cab for Cutie..initially wondered whether I had misheard...I'm glad I'm not the only one getting the joke.
