I think that's precisely what makes the recording so great.
I couldn't help but cry listening to this again; the message is so bittersweet in the context of today's world. Sweet for its pure, idealist message, but bitter because that message hasn't been fully realized yet. 1977 was still a year when musicians wearied of the war that had been played out on the television set and tried to write some songs with just a little bit of hope. The power ballad hadn't subsumed the torch song yet, for one thing. That hope, while strained at times, was at least wistful.
Peace On Earth shouldn't be relegated to notions of cheesy Christmas sentiments. It's still something worth living and working for.
